How Diabetes and Obesity are Ravaging America Today

by

DO YOU FEAR for your health or feel exhausted all the time? Are you overweight? Or do you just have too much belly fat? Do you suffer from diabetes, monitor your blood sugar all the time, have serious blood sugar and insulin imbalances, or have elevated cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglyceride levels? If so, you may find this remarkable story of one my patient’s very interesting.

One evening, after a lecture in New York, a man approached me about becoming my patient. He was rotund, with a round, ruddy face, a booming voice, and a gentle manner. Everything about him was large — his appetite, his belly, and his heart.

Sam was nearly 60 years old, and his love of everything big was waning as he felt the encroachment of death. As we talked, he described years of feeding his fat, drinking a pint of heavy whipping cream every night before bed to keep his weight up.

In the end, the big presence that Sam’s 300-plus pound corpus gave him was not worth the infirmities he suffered. He was diabetic. His insulin was over 200, normal is less than 20. He also had dangerous cholesterol levels, angina, sleep apnea, a sluggish thyroid, and was doggedly fatigued, short of breath at nearly every step, had nasal congestion, swollen legs, dry skin, and yeast grew all over his body.

Sam may sound like a hopeless case, but the truth is that everything Sam had done to his body he did himself and could undo. I told him that if he did everything I suggested he would lose weight, feel better, and all his symptoms would go away.

Enthusiastic, though somewhat skeptical, he left my office determined. Three months later when I spoke to him again, he lost 30 pounds, had more energy, his nasal congestion was gone, his fluid-filled, swollen legs were better, and all of his cravings were gone — he never felt hungry, and he found the program I prescribed to him easy to follow.

Fourteen months later I saw him again and repeated his blood tests. I was shocked when he weighed in. He had lost 110 pounds without being on a strict deprivation diet. He simply changed his eating and his lifestyle. His diabetes was CURED. His blood sugar dropped from 130 to 74 (greater than 126 fasting denotes diabetes). His HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides were normal without any medication. And he was exercising vigorously three to four times a week.

After a lifetime of uncontrollable appetites, Sam finally found balance and health without suffering. Yes, he changed his diet and lifestyle, but he was able to continue taking pleasure in food. Most importantly, he looked and felt twenty years younger.

Whether you are suffering from a little extra weight around the middle or you have been diagnosed with insulin resistance or even type 2 diabetes, the fundamental underlying biological causes of ALL of these conditions are the same.

Now, I know Sam’s story is an extreme one. You may or may not be suffering from problems as severe as those he faced. Even so, I’m sure you can relate to some of what Sam experienced if you are overweight, have high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, have problems with your blood sugar, or have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes …

You may feel twenty years older than you are, and, deep down, you may even be terrified by the possibility of additional health complications like heart disease, stroke, dementia, nerve damage, blindness, and amputation or even cancer. Like so many others that suffer with this condition, you just want to live a normal life and get back some of your energy and vitality; you want to turn back the clock and reverse your diabetes …

You can do that. I know most people are skeptical when a doctor tells them they can reverse diabetes, but you can have the same experience Sam did, and you don’t have to suffer or starve to make that happen.

Many Names, One Disease — Defining Diabesity

You may be one among millions of people who are suffering from a health problem that is now epidemic in our country. Your doctor might have diagnosed you with one of many seemingly different diseases. He may have said you have:

    • Insulin resistance
    • Pre-diabetes
    • Metabolic syndrome
    • Obesity
    • Syndrome X
    • Adult onset diabetes
    • Type 2 diabetes

What he likely didn’t tell you is that ALL of these conditions are basically the same thing—just with varying degrees of severity. The underlying causes of ALL of these conditions are the same. And because they are all the same condition, the treatment for all of them is also the same.

That is why I have set aside these conventional diagnoses in place of a new name that more accurately defines the health problems you may suffer from. That term is diabesity.(i) Diabesity is the condition of metabolic imbalance and disease that ranges all the way from mild blood sugar imbalance to full blow diabetes.

Whether you are suffering from a little extra weight around the middle or you have been diagnosed with insulin resistance or even type 2 diabetes, the fundamental underlying biological causes of ALL of these conditions are the same. This is what I’ve discovered in over 20 years seeing thousands of patients.

Diabesity, in its various forms, affects over 1 billion people worldwide. It is a massive global problem, and our current approach to prevention and treatment is obviously not working because millions more are affected every year in a dramatic increase of a condition that was once very rare.

Diabesity is also the leading cause of most chronic disease in the 21st century.(ii) Those with diabesity are at an increased risk of heart disease (iii), (iv), stroke, dementia(v), cancer(vi), high blood pressure, blindness, and kidney failure. Nervous system damage also affects 60 to 70 percent of people with diabetes and can lead to a loss of sensation in the hands and feet, slow digestion of food in the stomach, carpal tunnel syndrome, sexual dysfunction, and other nerve problems.

So this is VERY real and VERY serious for those who suffer from the condition. Given all of this, one would think the questions on everyone’s mind would be: Why is this happening? What has caused this diabesity epidemic? Why are our current approaches to treating the problem failing so miserably? And what new approaches could we take that would more effectively treat the problem?

Few in medicine today are asking these questions, yet their answers are disarmingly simple.

The Problems with Diabesity Treatment — Symptoms, Not Causes

The reason our current approach to treating diabesity fails is because it focuses on treating the symptoms or risk factors of the disease rather than the causes. All of our attention is on treatments that:

    • Lower blood sugar (diabetes drugs and insulin)
    • Lower high blood pressure (anti-hypertensive drugs)
    • Lower cholesterol (statins)
    • Thin the blood (aspirin)

But we never ever ask the most important question: Why is your blood sugar, blood pressure, or blood cholesterol too high and why is your blood too sticky and likely to clot? Put another way: What are the root causes of diabesity?

Answering that question must be the focus of our diagnosis and treatment of this disease if we are going to solve this global epidemic.

In truth, diabetes, elevated blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol are simply downstream symptoms that result from problems with our diet, lifestyle, and environmental toxins interacting with our unique genetic susceptibilities. These are the real causes of diabesity. Unfortunately, few are taking the time to treat them.

Using medication or surgery to treat symptoms like imbalanced blood sugar, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and the other complications of diabetes is like mopping up the floor while the sink overflows.

In medicine today we have a choice. We can continue to mop up this overflow, or we can deal with the source of the problem and turn off the faucet—that is, treat the root problems that are causing your illness. In this three-part blog series, I am going to show you how to turn off the faucet so you can heal from your diabesity and achieve optimal health.

The real solution for diabesity is a comprehensive diet and lifestyle program. And in this series of three blogs I am going to teach you how you can integrate such an approach into your life to heal from your symptoms. I will show you why conventional treatments typically fail, what you can really do to treat diabesity, and explain how healing the 7 key underlying systems in your body is the real solution to the problem.

By following this system you may see many of your lifelong health symptoms evaporate in a matter of weeks or even days in some cases, and you may — for the first time — achieve vibrant health.

Now I’d like to hear from you …

Do you believe you can be healed from diabesity?

Have you tried conventional medical treatments? How have they worked for you?

Are you ready to try a radically new approach that may help you heal once and for all?

Let me know your thoughts by posting a comment below.

To your good health,

Mark Hyman, MD

I can’t wait to read the next in the series of three blogs you mention above. I am the heaviest I have ever been in my life, and worried about it as I just can’t seem to easily drop the weight I’m putting on around my belly and thighs. And my husband is just fat all over now, and seems to be craving more and more food, especially carbs and sugars

I have been on the verge of diabetes for years and am stuggling with belly fat. I am 67 yrs old, weigh 139 and 5’4″ tall.I eat a mostly whole foods diet.

My question: If I eat whole natural foods with very little dairy and very little grain do I have to eat meat, chicken etc? I am an animal lover and don’t like to eat them. Can a whole foods mostly vegetarian diet be adequate?
    Thanks.

    Dear Dr. Hyman:

Thank you for talking to us about diabesity. I have made some strides in my quest to NOT have statins forced down my throat. I am 55 yr. young, and I used to weigh 195 lbs. @ 5’7″. “Morbidly obese”, is what my (M.D.) doctor called me 5 years ago (at age 50). Now, 5 years later, I am at 164 lbs. 5’6″, 10 lbs. short of 154 lb goal. However, my triglycerides atre off the charts and are headed towards Mars: 1,055!! I am NOT going to follow my M.D.’s advice of going by the Am. Heart Ass.’s and Am. Diab. Ass.’s eating guidelines. Instead I am taking some supplements recommended by my Chiropractic Hollistic Health (D.C.) doctor, Dr. Eva Ligeri- – who, by the way attended one of your seminars- -and is a believer of your mantra: “treat the cause, not the symptom.” I am totally off red meats and limit my intake of turkey and chicken. If I eat anything fried (rarely, and only at home) it is in olive oil only. I eat dark green lettuces in my salads. Also,
I gave up dairy and have cereal with almond milk. What other lifestyle changes in my eating habits would you also recommend? I realize it is not a diet. This is a lifestyle change in eating habits. Please advise me, or tell me if I can purchase a book by you with recipes and meals advice included. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

    Respectfully,
    David Marandola

Diabesity can be eliminated. My treatment by medication has not controlled my type II, in fact with the addition of supplemental “pills” I immediately gained 20 pounds. I am now exercising regularly and feel better after a session in the gym.

    Hi.
I would be very interested in this program. I have high BP, high blood sugar, and elevated cholesterol. I also have A-fib so I am on blood thinners and hypertensives. I stopped taking statins(Dr. approved) I weigh in at 230 lbs, and am 67 in tall.
So I know where I stand as to diabesity.
Now at the same time I eat very, and I say very little bread,no cookies , cake, onyl a small amount of ice cream, once in a while. I have had only a small amount of alcohol since christmas and I do not enjoy much fast food.
But for some reason I cannot lose any weight.I have yried but I gain it back quickly. I do need some kind of sensible program
    Thanks

I have all the symptoms listed in your article and on a raft off drugs like metformin and glycizide, overweight and just developed diverticulitus. I feel awful a lot of the time, however within the last year I started an exercise regime and a healthy eating plan. I’m often tired, but do have periods of feeling perfectly fine. I would like noting better than to get off all these drugs…. statin, blood pressure, etc., but so far have not lost enough weight. However, a lot of my numbers are a lot better. Any other suggestions? Thks.

I have high blood pressure and presently take 7 pills in the morning, two at lunch, and three in the evening. My doctor told me to lose weight, I lost 40 pounds and still the blood pressure went higher. She told me to lose weight again and I replied, “Why, I lost 40 pounds the blood pressure went higher and you added more medicine does that not tell you something. Losing the weight had no impact on my blood pressure.” What will impact my high blood pressure is beyond me. I know it needs to come down at times it reads 181/84 with a pulse of 64 and sometimes higher.

Doctor Mark, I am 64 years old, I am suffering with type2 Diabeties, Sleep Apnea, Arthritis, Fybromyalgia, High Blood Pressure, food not digesting properly,
extreme overweight, poor sleeping habits and I need help. I am on 3 different tablets for the Diabeties, a Cpap machine, 11 years. I looked after my mother who had had a stroke, who hardly never slept, so for most of the 7 years I only cat napped, My GP said that most of this started with an underactive thyroid gland, that was not diagnosed for about 10 years, I lost a lot of hair growth, and put on a lot of weight in that 10 years, I was watching a vet programme on TV that showed a dog that had its fur falling out and had gotten very fat and the vet told the owner that its thyroid gland was most probably the problem, so I rang my GP and after a blood test it showed that I had the same problem. I have started changing what I am eating and have lost 9 kilos, but do not know what suppliments to take, and am exhausted most of the time, please help me. thank you for listening.

I do want to hear more about your program & methods. I have struggled for
Years w/ my weight, I have Hashimoto’s & have tried many tx’s w/ many dr’s. I am on Levoxyl, Lisinopril & other prn meds for migraines. Needless to say I am 90 lbs overweight, lack energy, have a stressful job & know I must exercise I just keep talking myself out of it b/c I am exhausted. I know what to eat to be healthy & refuse to go on any more crazy fad diets. I am 43 & when I was 20 I was 30 lbs overweight & followed the yeast connection plan, walked 3 miles a day religiously & w/in 6 mo was 30 lbs lighter & felt fantastic. Since then the only program I have been able to get healthy on is Weight Watchers & the last time I joined i was unsuccessful. I want to be healthy & not feel starving w/ low blood sugar, lose weight & then gain it all back. Any help I could get would be life saving.

I have type II diabetes. My weight is 190 and I am 5 feet 6 inches tall. I have been losing weight but it is very hard. I have lost about 40 pounds in the last three years. I am on metformin and was on glipizide but stopped that because it gave me lots of low blood sugars and it made me feel horrible. I have been taking natural herbs from an Ayurvedic herbalist that I trust. But unfortunately all that he has given me hasn’t helped lower my blood sugar. My fasting morning numbers are 250-310. I do exercise on a imcumbent bike for 30 several days a week and I also have an infared sauna that I use. I would love to cure my diabetes and be healther than I am. I do eat organic alot and drink kefir for the probiotics. Please educate me so I can conquer this problem.

I agree with what you are saying – if all the drugs we take were really working, with a cure, then we would no longer need to be taking them. Every time I go to the GP, I say “please no more tablets”.

I just purchased your UltraSimple Diet book and intend to start the detox diet in one week – next Sunday. However, I do have diabetes and would very much appreciate having access to your 3-series blog mentioned above.

I am delighted to see this article. In fact I asked my physician all of these questions. He responded with anger and dismissed me out of hand. I then went to my chiropracter with the same questions. He responded with whole food supplements. This occurred 2 months ago. My blood glucose is still very high. I exercise several miles a day 5 out of 7 days a week, and eat a low carb diet. Any advice will be welcome. PLEASE RESPOND TO ME—AND THIS E-MAIL.

Do you believe you can be healed from diabesity? Yes.

Have you tried conventional medical treatments? Yes, How have they worked for you? My A1C readings have stayed above 7.

Are you ready to try a radically new approach that may help you heal once and for all? Yes.

dear sir from what I have read via your e messages you appear to be a very genuine person and wonderfully knowledgeable Man of the world.Where I am in S.A. it is thought that if your oral meds doesnt work for good control then you have to go onto insulin ,as a type 2 that is. Reading all the blurb from America,it would seem that you must buy this book and that book and the following suppliments etc. etc. etc..It just makes you wonder ..Where is the truth/???

I am very interested in doing something other than having medicinal treatment to help me. I see all the commercials and with every new medication out there along with it is an attachment of multiple side effects, some even life threatening. I do not understand how these meds could be in anyones best interest.
I know in my heart there are alternative cures to help us through all of these diseases that are out of control everywhere. We just need to be able to find the doctors who want to help the people to help themselves as opposed to doctors who practice on us with different medications like lab critters.

This article sounds like the answer to all (maybe not all) my prayers.
I have all of the above problems and more.
I have been sick since I was 3 years old. I had to take predinsone for 30 years.
I have tried so hard with diet and I always fail.

  1. I fit the description above. 58, 290lbs., male, 7 bypasses last July, diabetic, normal BP(118/78, normal Cholesterol (200), almost no sugar, no soda diet or otherwise, eat healthy (organic) 80% of the time, supplement with many things. I know my testosterone and DHEA SO4 are very low and T3 is low also. Haven’t checked rT3 yet. I feel that low testosterone and T3 are major problems for me. I am sure that 28 years of smoking (quit 17 yrs. ago), diabetes, and eating any and everything for 45 years contributed to the bypass. My testosterone was only 25% of optimal levels and T3 50% low. What do you think? I need help. Do you treat long distance?

I believe that diabesity can be healed. please send me the details. I’ve been diagnosed of diabetes type2 when I was pregnant on 2001 (I was so chubby when I was a kid) n my weight is up n down n my body was like a baloon, most of the time sooooo chubby, lost weight n got back to be chubby. I’m an Asian woman on late 40′s. I want to live my life free from diabetic, high blood pressure n bad cholesterol.

I would like to get your 7keys underlying system in my body to get the real solution problem to help heal my body and have good health, but to tell you the truth I’m jobless right now ( got laid-off three months ago).

I look forward to have your favorable reply at your earliest convenience. Thank you very much n GBU / shana

    Dear Dr Hyman
I have diabetes since 2003 and now I am on insulin. I have to test my sugar all the time and it seems that my sugars are always going up and down sometimes they are alright and then bam! Any way for some reason I am also gaining weight I was below 200 now I’m above it. It’s hard for me to bend over if you know what I mean. Also I have stomach problems and I have diarhrea all the time. Plus I’m exhausted all the time and my b-12 is very low and they put me on injections which isn’t doing anything. I have had trouble with my b-12 since July of last year. I just feel awful and can’t get out of my own way. I’;m only 66 but feel like 106. I hope that you can help me also I cannot take any meds they all make me sick I take atenolol and hydrochlorothiazide and humalog 75/25 plus red yeast rice and fish oil plus a fiber pill.also I don’t sleep which accounts for me being exhausted all the time, hope you can help.

Dr Hyman, Thank you for caring and pushing the envelope. I am a 57 year old female caucasian and have been on BP med since 1994 when I survived a tachycardia event. I am 5’7″ and my college weight clocked in at around 130 after birthing 3 children I went up to around 147. After beginnig the meds I ballooned up to 180 I have been there ever since and have developed belly fat. I am moderately active physically. My first med for hbp was normodyne about 6 years ago I switched to the double whammy power of uniretic and toprol. Recently my doc wanted to add a statin and thyroid med to the list. I have drawn the line, stepped up my physical activity bicycling 5 mornings a week for 1 hour working out at the gym with a trainer 2 days a week and some yoga. I recently have added Nattikonase and a hawthorn berry/passion flower syrup to my vitamins and my blood pressure is dropping rapidly. I think I will soon be off the meds or be on a much reduced plan. I have read your book and love your diet plan. I have found it very important to add the pro and prebiotics and eat the pickled foods. They add in quite nicely with what you have got going for instance. I had a homemade ruben yesterday, no meat, but using saurkraut and fresh sprouts. It was great and took some of the edge of the sauerkraut. There is a great vegan kitchen out of the miami area that sells it pickles in glass jars and they are put up with all sorts of organic vegetables and are terrific. Our grandparents did not eat that stuff for nothing. It seems like we don’t have time for excercise but the mental effects of getting that extra oxygen into the system can not be replaced and it brings you right to the present moment and helps you stay there. If a person can only make himself just do it – no choice – like brushing the teeth, then soon one develops the outlook of wanting to plan more and more time for movement and fun. Thank you so much for all that you do – our generation needs you !

I just got diagnosed with diabesity with an A1C of 99. I am scheduled to attend a nutrition class on Monday evening at a hospital run clinic. (I’ll let you guess what they will say.) I’m anxious to see what they say about prevention and fixing the source of the problem, not the symptoms.

I read with great interest your article and like to tell you a story.
Im seventy years old very healthy due to looking after my body.
About seven years ago I got involved with a lady who is diabetic and had lots of problems.
I never had been involved with diabetic and looked for ways I could help my partner.
First I took her of sugar and replaced it with stevia .
she loved cheese and milk products I made her omit that to .
She also loved bread I made her omit that as well.
I started her on a raw food diet about a year ago now her blood sugars are back to normal.
She thinks she has asthma water retention and is having a heart murmur there for she does not like walking.
Im now trying to make her walk so she will loos weigh and build up strength Im determent to get her better and think Im winning .
I believe cancer is coursed by over processed food to much sodium sugar and not enough sun as most drive in a car to work be inside all day often sitting to much .
Go home have some food watch tv or a movie and go to bed drink sodas and coffee alcohol and probably some drugs to go with it no wonder so many are sick.

I am a Type I Diabetic who wishes you would stipulate between Type i and Type II’s. I must always explain that my disease is not caused by obesity. Then I come on here and see you, a respected doctor, not stipulating the differences. Do us all a favor: release a press release about the differences, then start addressing them in your posts/articles. I got sick after I had the flu , when I was five. My pancreas stopped working. You are hurting Type I’s by insinuating that we ate too much, got sick, and are part of the “obesity epidemic”.
