YOUR BODY MAY BE a toxic waste dump. Worried? You should be …
We are exposed to 6 million pounds of mercury and the 2.5 billion pounds other toxic chemicals each year.
Eighty thousand toxic chemicals have been released into our environment since the dawn of the industrial revolution, and very few have been tested for their long-term impact on human health. And let me tell you, the results aren’t pretty for those that have been tested …
How can we not be affected by this massive amount of poison?
According to the nonprofit organization Environmental Working Group, the average newborn baby has 287 known toxins in his or her umbilical cord blood.
If a newborn is exposed to that many toxins, imagine how many you have been exposed to in your life…
Do you think this may be why so many of us are sick and fat today?
The simple truth is that we are living in a sea of toxins and it is destroying our bodies and brains.
The two most important things you need to know to cure disease, create health, and lose weight are:
- The role of nutrition in health and disease.
- The role of toxins and the importance of detoxification in health and disease.
Unfortunately, you probably aren’t going to learn much about them from your doctor. Most physicians today are still hopelessly ignorant in these areas. They were simply never taught about nutrition and detoxification in medical school.
However, there are many things you can do to reduce your toxic exposures and enhance your detoxification. Today I want to share some information your doctor probably won’t focus on in your next visit, even though it is at the very root of your health. I am going to outline a simple 10-step plan you can use to enhance your detoxification.
Problems with detoxification form one root of illness. If you feel lousy, it’s likely you’re toxic.
Enhancing detoxification is the fifth key of the Seven Keys to UltraWellness. If you want to lose weight and get healthy, you need to clean up the toxic waste in your body. Today you will learn how.
The Role of Toxins in Health and Disease
The role of toxins and detoxification in health has been largely ignored by medicine.
Thankfully, scientists and practitioners are starting to recognize its importance in health.
I recently spoke about detoxification at the 13th International Symposium on Functional Medicine. The presentation was called Managing Biotransformation: The Metabolic, Genomic, and Detoxification Balance Points. Leading experts from all over the globe came together to present the data on the role of toxins in health and offer suggestions for how we can detoxify.
If you want all the scientific background on detoxification, I recommend reading the proceedings from that meeting. You will find extensive data on the impact toxins have on our health and how critical detoxification is for long-term wellness.
The reality is that many of you probably have symptoms of chronic toxicity but don’t realize that you’re toxic.
The following is a list of the common symptoms of chronic toxicity. If you suffer from any of the following, detoxifying might be critical for you to get healthy and feel good again:
- Fatigue
- Muscle aches
- Joint pain
- Sinus congestion
- Postnasal drip
- Excessive sinus problems
- Headaches
- Bloating
- Gas
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Foul-smelling stools
- Heartburn
- Sleep problems
- Difficulty concentrating
- Food cravings
- Water retention
- Trouble losing weight
- Rashes
- Skin problems
- Eczema
- Psoriasis
- Canker sores
- Acne
- Puffy, dark circles under the eyes
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Other menstrual disorders
- Bad breath
But how do you detoxify? And what does that word even mean? Let’s look a little more closely at what detoxification is.
What are Toxicity and Detoxification?
When you hear the word “detox” you might think drug detox or alcohol detox or wheatgrass enemas. That’s not what I am talking about.
I am referring to the science of how our bodies get rid of waste. If waste builds up, we get sick. And the key is to figure out how to enhance your body’s capacity to detoxify and get rid of waste while minimizing your exposure to toxins.
This is so important, because many diseases of our society are actually related to toxicity. Here are some of the diseases you may suffer from if you are toxic:
- Parkinson’s disease
- Alzheimer’s diseaseDementia
- Autism
- Attention deficit disorder
- Depression and other mood disorders
- Insomnia
- Heart disease
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Fibromyalgia
- Cancer
- Autoimmune disease
- Food allergies
- Arthritis
- Digestive diseases like Crohn’s disease, ulcers, and colitis
- Menstrual problems like heavy bleeding, cramps, PMS, menopausal symptoms, mood changes and hot flashes
With so many conditions on that list, it might seem that everyone is toxic.
That may be true to differing degrees …
Problems with detoxification form one of the roots of illness–and signify one of the core systems in the body that must be working well for you to be healthy. If you feel lousy, it’s likely you’re toxic.
It is important to understand why we are toxic and how we can detoxify. I will explain how you can detoxify a little later, but first I want to tell you about where toxins come from and how we are overloaded.
To understand toxicity, you must understand the concept of “total load.”
Total load is the total amount of stressors on your system at any one time–it’s like what happens when a glass fills over with water. It takes a certain amount of water to fill the glass and then, after a certain point, you put more in and it overflows.
When our detoxification system is overwhelmed, it gets overloaded. That’s when we start developing symptoms and getting sick, but it may take years of accumulated stress and toxins to get to that point.
Here are some, but not all, of the factors that can contribute to your total toxic load:
- Exposure to heavy metals like mercury and lead, petrochemicals, residues, pesticides, and fertilizers.
- Food allergies, environmental allergies, molds, and toxins from molds.
- Eating a standard American diet.
- Mental, emotional, and spiritual toxins — isolation, loneliness, anger, jealousy, and hostility, all of which translate into toxins in our system.
- Medications can sometimes be toxins. Often we need medications, but the reality is that most of us are overmedicated and use medications to treat problems for which there are better solutions, such as lifestyle and diet.
- Internal toxins–things like bacteria, fungus, and yeast inside our gut as well as hormonal and metabolic toxins that we need to eliminate.
That’s a lot of toxins for our bodies to manage.
You may wonder: Why aren’t we all sick, given this incredible load of toxins?
The answer is simple.
It is because each of us is genetically and biochemically unique. Some of us are good at getting rid of toxins and waste, and others are not.
I am not. That is why I developed chronic fatigue syndrome.
I became overloaded with mercury and couldn’t get rid of it because I am missing a gene for GSTM1–a critical detoxifying enzyme for mercury. But by learning to support my system and how to detoxify, I was able to cure myself of a seemingly incurable condition.
What I learned is that there are five key steps to optimal detoxification. They are:
- Identify and Get Rid of Toxins – I listed the primary forms of toxic exposure above. Eliminating them is absolutely essential if you want to rebalance your detox system.
- Fix Your Gut – Gut imbalances are a key source of toxins for many.
- Get Moving – This help your blood and lymphatic circulation do its job.
- Get Your Liver and Detox System Working – If your detoxification system isn’t working properly, this is a serious problem and needs to be addressed. A great place to start is the 10-step approach outlined below.
- Detox Your Mind, Heart, and Spirit – This is just as important as detoxing your body, and it’s an area few of us ever think about as a source of toxins.
To completely detoxify your body you need to work through each of these steps carefully, and that can take some time. But you can start today by following this simple 10-step plan.
10 Simple Steps to Enhance Detoxification
Proper detoxification is so essential for health that you need to start enhancing your body’s ability to detoxify today. Here is how to do it:
- Drink Clean – Drink plenty of clean water, at least eight to ten glasses of filtered water a day.
- Eliminate Properly – Keep your bowels moving, at least once or twice a day. And if you can’t get going, then you need some help. This can include taking two tablespoons of ground flax seeds and taking acidophilus and extra magnesium citrate capsules. If you have any chronic diseases or problems, you have to be careful about taking supplements and should work with your doctor.
- Eat Clean – You should also eat organic produce and animal products to eliminate the toxins, hormones, and antibiotics in your food.
- Eat Detoxifying Food – You should eat 8 to 10 servings of colorful fruits and vegetables a day, particularly family of the cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, collards, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi) and the garlic family (garlic and onions), which help increase sulfur in the body and help detoxification.
- Minimize Drugs – Avoid stimulants, sedatives, and drugs, such as caffeine and nicotine, and try to reduce alcohol intake.
- Get Moving – Exercise five days a week with focus on conditioning your cardiovascular system, strengthening exercises, and stretching exercises.
- Avoid the White Menace – This includes white flour and white sugar.
- Sweat – Sweat profusely at least three times a week, using a sauna, steam, or a detox bath.
- Supplement – Take a high-quality multivitamin and mineral supplement.
- Relax – Relax deeply every day to get your nervous system in a state of calm, rest, and relaxation.
Simply following these steps will help to correct problems caused by toxicity, maximize your body’s own detoxification capacity, and help you safely eliminate toxins stores in your body.
Depending on your symptoms, genetic predispositions and environmental exposures, you may need different levels of nutrients and types of treatment, but this is an excellent way to get started on detoxification today.
Remember, getting rid of toxins and learning how to optimize your detoxification system is essential for creating lifelong vibrant health.
Now I’d like to hear from you…
Why do you think we live in such a toxic world?
Do you think the government should do more to regulate toxins? If so, what kind of legislation should be put in place to protect us?
Have you suffered from toxic exposures? What were they and how did they make you feel?
Do you have any other suggestions for detoxification?
Please let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment below.

I just found out that I have several genes that prevent my body from detoxing anything at all. I am in toxic overload and I wonder if your treatment might not be enough, I am very sick.

Dr. Hyman, you talk about doing detox by eating things from the cruciferous family like vegetables (broccoli, collards, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi) and the garlic family (garlic and onions), which help increase sulfur in the body and help detoxification. What if you are allergic to sulfur and do not tolerate onions and garlic due to their high sulfur content. How does being allergic to sulfur (sulfites) effect your overall health and detox ability? I am allergic to sulfur and also have a sensitivity to citric acid, citrus fruits, chocolate, canola, dairy and eggs.

Living in a polluted city like Jakarta makes it very challenging. Time for a move!
Dr. Hyman I am a controlled type II diabetic and take medications for the diabetes, high cholesteral, and hypertension. I am overweight and have a fatty liver. A recent abdominal ultrasound confirmed a fatty liver. Recently my blood tests for my liver are elevated after years of normalcy.
Is it safe for me to detoxify; liver, and colon? I have purchased a product called Lotus Purity by Dr. Suzanne to do this but am leary of doing so with my health conditions now. Please advise. Mary

I am unable to eliminate toxins and waste properly from my body and detoxing overloads my system. Your clinic is too far for me to go, or I would, so my question si what kind of doctor can help with this? I’m very open, I just am uncertain. Thank you.
Thank you, Judy, for your message and your interest in Dr. Hyman’s work. To locate a practitioner of functional medicine in your area see the “Find a Functional Medicine Practitioner” link at the Institute of Functional Medicine’s website. Here you will find a place to enter your zip code and look for practitioner’s in your area that have completed the institute’s five-day training course in functional medicine. Understand that not all of the doctors listed here will fit your particular needs. Many different medical professionals complete this training, and you will have to do additional research on your own regarding a particular practitioner’s approach and whether or not it fits your specific medical requirements. This may include calling the practioner’s office, visiting his or her website, and/or scheduling a consultation.

Dr. Hyman presents a very good case for the importance of maintaining the body detoxified. The practice he advocates is appropriate for a disciplned lifestyle that would assure a healthy body. I wonder however, if an initial dose or cleansing event would be a better way to “launch.” Such as a safe colon cleanser of some kind which would immediately deal with one of the cesspool of our problem- the colon buildup of junk. Or, am I missing something in my understanding? (I do know it’s a whole body problem.)
Advise…and thanks

As a kid we would play with beads of mercury in school, not knowing it was very toxic. What are the longterm residual effects from this exposure. I am now 59 and my energy levels and general well being is pathetic. I feel lethargic , do not sleep well, and overweight. I developed asthma as an adult and hypothroid at age 29. I am very interested in a program that will bring new vitality to my life
Is it gas, air, water retention, fat or all of these together…I have had increasing stomach pain, bloating, flatulence (forced), abdominal swelling?, etc. without relief no matter what I do or take or when (timing). Have reviewed Dr. Hyman’s website’s contents (also by way of Daniel Plan on Saddleback Church’s website) and recognize what I have done that follows his suggestions/knowledge and such. As I write this, the symptoms are still chronic(?), uncomfortable. Have changed my diet to organic and natural food products. Added exercise to my wellness regimen. Digestive/stomach problems persist. Primary Care has suggested breathing exercises, eliminating lastose, and other foods to discover which ones are troublesome, etc. Had a colonoscopy/clear. Sorry for this long post…I still need some “real” help! Please advise. Thank you.

Why is what you are saying make so much sense? I’ve got psoriasis and I gotta believe that it is almost 100% diet related from toxins. I don’t think big food manufacturers or the government are incentivized to help us. thank you for your work.
Could you please speak to the benefit/value of frequently using a sauna (and PLEASE, PLEASE specifiy the “preferred”— water over rocks–steam room—or the easily found infrared type) to detox our bodies. THANKS so much!
I’m telling anyone who will listen about the wonderful work Dr. Hyman is doing. Thanks be to God for his dedication and hard work on our behalf. Must be exhausting! Keep healthy and stay with us LONG
I am told I have mega colon. (My mother had it) I am 122 pounds at 5’5″. I don’t bloat, I eat mostly fruits and vegetables, with some meat and nuts. I only have a bowel movement every 7-10 days. I don’t usually have discomfort, just don’t go to the bathroom. Am told I have autoimmune problem (+ANA, skin sensitivity, hypothyroid, reynauds, high blood pressure-under control). Am I toxic?
Thanks

Thank you so much for your informative article on toxins in our environment and the effects that they have on our bodies. We have been using an all natural, safe for long term use, product for over 5 years with ourselves and our pets and have been amazed at the results. Many chronic health issues seem to disappear and people report an overall feeling of wellness that they hadn’t experienced for years.
If you could remove heavy metals, chemicals, toxins, VOC’s, allergens, carcinogens, pre-viral components and more, that was relatively inexpensive wouldn’t you try it?
Can you comment on what you believe is the most valid test for heavy metal toxicity? I have used Doctor’s Data for two provoked urine tests, but am concerned about the controversy surrounding this test. Do you believe this is a valid test or should I seek another testing avenue? I have been doing oral EDTA chelation for 6 months as well as a Chlorella detox supplement and am hoping to measure PROGRESS! Thanks for any help you can provide.
I was listening to you on talk radio last night and missed your constipation cocktail. I would love to know what it is…in desperate need.
Thanks
Hi Betsy,
Thank you for your interest in Dr. Hyman’s work. For healthy bowel care on a daily basis, we suggest:
1. 2 tablespoons ground flax seed or hemp seed in shakes, salads, or however you like to take them. Just don’t expose to high heat!
2. 200-600mg magnesium citrate, taper down if this causes loose stool or switch to magnesium glycinate
3. 1,000-2,000 buffered vitamin C.
4. Plenty of purified water
If that plan, coupled with daily moderate exercise does not get you going, you might try:

You spend a lot of time talking about mercury. What about copper overload? It is just as bad and is a common problem. Copper deficiency is rare.. Copper overload is associated with hormone imbalance, joint pain, chronic fatigue, anxiety/depression and cancer. It is an endocrine disruptor, elevates cholesterol, syndrome X, predisposes to viral fungal and yeast infections and impairs liver function. Low zinc/molybdenum + xenoestrogens (all of which are common) = copper retention. Many people have elevated levels when it is finally looked for on a challenge test or hidden copper overload on hair analysis.
I am a New York City Firefighter and was exposed to many dangerous toxins during the rescue and recovery effort shortly after the collapse of the World Trade center on Sept. 11,2001.The amount of exposure was extensive and i’ve read that the toxins your body is unable to get rid of are stored in your bodies fat cells. Is that true and would the detox protcol you describe above be strong enough to detoxify my body of all or most of these highly toxic substances?
Hi Michael,
We truly regret to hear your condition and thank you for your service on 9/11. Yes, our program can certainly help you to use diet, lifestyle and supplementation to augment your own detoxification system. Unfortunately what you have heard regarding toxic load in the body is true however there are many practitioners in your area able to offer you the appropriate care. We would suggest you start with the UltraSimple Diet: http://store.ultrasimplediet.com/ and also work with a trained physician who practices medicine like Dr. Hyman. S/he can order the appropriate testing for you and monitor your progress. Often with detoxing it is prudent to work with a qualified practitioner. To locate a doctor near you in the NYC region who practices functional medicine like Dr. Hyman, go to http://www.functionalmedicine.org/practitioner_search.aspx?id=117 and scroll down to where it says “locate a practitioner” and enter your zip. I have found activated charcoal to be the single best detoxifier. It also has the side befit of lowering cholesterol. Been taking it off & on for a year, feel great & my cholesterol has lowered to 166 over all, HDL 55 LDL 99 Triglicirides 68 & I’m 62 years old.
I am curious about those of us who are old enough to have been exposed to DDT. I was exposed extensively to DDT between the ages of 8 to 12. My mother raised gladiolas and DDT was used to prevent disease for the gladiola bulbs.
All three of my children had foot deformaties which required special shoes for their first five years and a brace for my middle child. It was when they were in their twenties that an occupational therapist told me that my DDT exposure may have been the cause of their consistent foot deformaties since my eggs were developing during that time frame of 8-12 years of age. There is not a history of foot deformaties in either side of my family. My 8 grandchildren have not had foot deformaties either.
It was about two years after my youngest (now 31) was born that I read about the Japanese Snow Monkeys’ exposure to DDT and the foot and hand deformaties the monkey babies experienced. i started to put two and two together, but I cannot find any source that is understandable for a layperson.
What sources are you aware of regarding DDT long-term effects for my own health (I am 67 now) along with the possible long-term effects for my children who have appeared to be healthy and relatively normal other than the foot issues?
I remember my mother telling about the salesman who ate a teaspoon of DDT in front of her to show that it was safe for humans. Several years ago I also read about DDTs supposed non-effect upon us humans but as I said, there is nothing really understandable.
Thank you.

My doctor believes that I have heavy metal poisoning. She referred me to a physical for a heavy metal challenge test using EDTA and possibly have chelation therapy, depending on the results. I am terrified because of my multiple chemical and environmental sensitivities of trying the EDTA for this test.
1) what are your thoughts on this alternative process?
2) are there other testing methods that are not so extreme?
Note: I am extremely low vitamin D and have been doing everything on your list above for the past 6 weeks!
Hi JBL,
Detoxification must be done under the supsrvision of a trained professional. While Dr Hyman has had success treating patients with heavy metal toxicity, this is not a topic he can provide advice on via this forum. In order to provide you the proper care you need we hope you will seek the attention of a local qualified Functional Med practitioner soon. Dr. Hayman,
My blood work showed that I have elevated liver enzymes and should think about a detox. I read your article amd noted the list of fruits and veggies, but wonder …….is that all I eat for the 10 days?
Hi Shelly,
Dr Hyman encourages you to eat lean and clean protein, slow carbohydrates, antiinflammatory fats and plenty of phytonutrients. For more information on your personal dietary needs check out the nutrition coaching forum! http://store.drhyman.com/Store/List/Coaching-Programs
