I have been overweight almost my whole life. I love food and love to cook. My mom always tried to gently change my eating and exercise habits but I just wasn’t ready. June 2011, at the end of school I was not happy with the way I looked and always tried to blend into the background.
I decided to start trying to eat healthier. I was a complete carb junkie so first thing I did was to cut out all carbs to try and break the habit of always filling up on everything carbohydrate. I stuck to lean proteins and vegetables. I didn’t cheat ever, I found my craving for carbohydrates was almost nil.
I also started exercising. I love watching TV so I would park our stationary bike in front of the TV and I would cycle as long as I was watching TV. Some nights it was 3 hours of just sitting watching TV and peddling.
Sometimes my mom would tell me I had done enough. Quite a difference from her always yelling at me to go outside and get some exercise. She always said when I was a little boy, I wouldn’t even crawl for a toy and when she took my brother and I outside to play I always wanted to ride in the wagon instead of walk.
By Christmas of 2011, I had lost close to 80lbs. I felt great, I had lots of energy and I felt really good about myself. I would every now and then let myself have a treat, but always made sure I exercised regularly. I found myself walking to friend’s houses instead of asking for a ride. I also bugged my mom to get a treadmill, she was a bit shocked.
It is now a full year later and I have lost 110lbs, from 277lbs at 15 to 167 at 16. I love my new body and how I feel. I have so much confidence and my mom is so proud of me.
I am 34. Up until 3 months ago I weighed 89 kg and I had an addiction to anything sweet. I did not consider lunch to be over until I had a dessert of some kind. I worked out hard but lost very little weight. I ran almost everyday but rarely over 1.5 miles as my body weight was considerable.
After reading Dr. Hyman’s book, I followed the Basic Plan, got rid of white sugar, white rice, white wheat, sodas, coffee and for the first few weeks, all bread and dairy. Eventually I re-introduced them in my diet. I now weigh 82 kg having lost 7 kg(15.5 lbs), I have no sugar craving, I look at sugar drinks with disgust and I can run up to 4 miles.

I am a sixty three year old female, 5’2 tall. I have a history of hypercholesterolemia. I inherited that along with my obesity and wrong eating patterns. I have been “doctoring” the high cholesterol for years.
My top weight was 250 lbs and my top cholesterol was 315. A few years back the doctor put me on drugs to lower the cholesterol and I had such a bad reaction…leg cramps, swelling in ankles and pain in my knees. After trying two drugs and red yeast rice I gave up. I refused medication.
I have lost 100 lbs three times in my life. This last time I went on a popular diet plan, and counted points and over the course of one year I lost 60 pounds. Still the cholesterol wouldn’t budge and the triglycerides were 422! Then my weight went back up as well.

I saw you, Dr. Hyman, on morning television while I was laid up with a broken pelvis. I immediately ordered your book.
My medical history is long and involved. I was given the apt diagnosis of “a mystery wrapped in an enigma”.
Basically, my liver was failing due to an unknown autoimmune disorder.
I couldn’t believe *I* had a liver problem. That was for alcoholics and druggies! I used to joke that my worst addiction was pasta and chocolate. And after reading your book, I have come to realize, that may have been my undoing… seriously!
So here I am, in 2012. I have had 2 liver transplants and 1 kidney transplant. My current kidney is failing due to transplant glomerulopathy, which I have been told is progressive and incurable. I am currently looking for a live donor.
Prior to your book’s arrival to my life, I came to realize, thru a friend and my own research, that I might have a problem with gluten. So before embarking on your plan, I had been gluten free and (mostly) dairy free for a year. While that helped with belly issues, my kidney continued to deteriorate.
I started your diet, in August 2012, with baby steps. Eliminating all processed foods, anything with corn syrup. A couple weeks ago, I eliminated coffee (and added green tea!). Although my sugar intake has been drastically reduced, I am having trouble letting it go completely. Again, I am a work in progress.
So here’s the thing. My most recent (comprehensive) blood draw in September showed a reduction in my creatinine. A REDUCTION!!

I watched your special on PBS about 6 months ago and blew it off. Watched it about 3 more times and it started making sense. I ate everything wrong – candy bars for breakfast, 1/2 a loaf of bread and jelly for lunch, all this time being diabetic, and on insulin.
I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I bought the book, and started on the diet Halloween Week. I have lost 8 pounds, and had to cut down my insulin 10 units just on the 2 weeks since Halloween. I feel so much better (except when my sugar goes too low, but we are working on that) and, surprisingly I’m not having the cravings I used to have that would sabotage my eating in the past.

Aug 10, 2012 I hit a low. I prayed for help and a friend showed up at work with your book. I was overweight, blood sugar 164 and so inflamed I couldn’t even lay on my back with my shoulders hitting the bed. I was in a stiff C shape.
I read your book, bought your suggestions, and changed my diet. I went off my medications for inflammation. The first 20 days I lost 20 pounds. I had so much swelling! Three months to the day, I have an overall loss of 40 pounds, and fasting was 96 this a.m. You’re the answer to my prayer.
I was unhappy and unhealthy at 222 lbs. I saw The Blood Sugar Solution on PBS and felt like Dr. Hyman was talking directly to me. I immediately ordered the book, and in 8 months I am down 48 lbs.! I’m still going strong.
I now have the energy to exercise, play with my son, and just live my life. I no longer get that “2:30 feeling” at work. Carrying around 100+ pounds of excess weight and being on a serious junk food diet finally caught up with me at age 40. I got very ill and finally went to the ER, I thought I was having a heart attack! My blood pressure was 200/150 and I was admitted to the cardiac ICU unit. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol (289!) and pre-diabetes (fasting 115). What a wake up call! I was put on high blood pressure and high cholesterol meds and sent home with stern warnings to change my ways.
The medications seemed to make me sicker than ever and I was back at the ER. I had a horrible reaction to Lipitor. The commercials say to beware of symptoms of “muscle weakness”, well that is the understatement of the year! I had trouble holding my head up and breathing, and I felt my heart had trouble beating, I thought I was dying.
I was told I was “allergic” to Lipitor and statins and I had to work harder with lifestyle changes. I also have asthma so I was seriously out of shape, weighing 100 more pounds than I should have, and trying to avoid exercise since it brought on asthma symptoms.
I tried harder with my diet, although I did try to be more active and walked a bit more. I made all of the “right” diet changes. Smart Balance oil, margarine, peanut butter, and other health claim foods. I switched to low-fat cream cheese, low-fat sour cream, low-fat cottage cheese, and soy milk. I severely cut down on junk food and Splenda became my best friend. I drank Splenda pop by the gallon and made countless cheesecakes with Splenda and low-fat cream cheese.
I thought I was doing great, but my cholesterol barely budged – it went down to 259. I got very discouraged and felt like a ticking time bomb – like anytime I would get the heart attack or stroke that I knew was coming to me. I went about my life with a heavy heart, not understanding why my cholesterol wouldn’t come down with all of the “healthy” food claim foods I was eating.
I finally discovered The Blood Sugar Solution while staying up one night and watching public television, it made sense so I bought the book. It was hard, but I wanted to try it. I gave up all dairy and processed foods. I barely ate chicken or beef anymore, and mostly ate fish and eggs for protein. I switched to only extra virgin olive oil and gave up Splenda and all other artificial sweeteners entirely.
My first thoughts were lowering my blood sugar, since my doctor was becoming increasingly alarmed at its steady rise I was on the verge of full blown diabetes. A few months ago, my doctor ordered another cholesterol check and I was avoiding it, not wanting to be reminded of the “ticking time bomb” inside of me.
I saw a health fair advertised for seniors and took my Mom for a hearing test, as well as a cholesterol screening. While there, the public health worker invited me to get mine tested. With a heavy heart I told her I already knew it was high and I didn’t want to know how high and told her about avoiding the test with my doctor. I asked her if the test was confidential, that the results would not be sent to my doctor for her to “yell” at me. I was promised no one would know but me, so I decided to go ahead. I told her that my cholesterol was 259 for YEARS and not to be alarmed at my numbers, since my doctor was already “yelling” at me sufficiently about it.
Well, I was SHOCKED to be told that my cholesterol was now 203!!! Just three points away from being considered “normal”! The public health worker was very impressed after hearing how high my cholesterol used to be and asked me more about my dietary changes, since I have not yet lost any weight (I am heavy on the fruits, I can see that giving up sweets is going to be a long term project, but at least I only eat whole real foods now).
I told her about The Blood Sugar Solution book and Dr. Hyman’s methods and now she wants to buy the book. WOW! I thought my body was “broken” beyond repair with not being able to budge my high cholesterol for years with all of the “health claim” frankenfoods. Now I know my body works fine when fed REAL food!
I can’t tell you how encouraging and empowering this is to me, I no longer have to live with a feeling of dread at a ticking time bomb inside of me. I now have the POWER to keep healing my body without the dangerous meds that nearly killed me.

In 2008 I was taking Claritin for allergies, Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism, acid reducers and PPI’s for reflux. I was also taking many medications for chronic cornea infections and dry eyes. I was experiencing menstrual migraines, daily silent migraines, I had extensive gum surgery, my gallbladder removed, and I was shedding hair faster than I could vacuum it up.
Then I read The Ultramind Solution. I couldn’t get enough! I went green. I overhauled my diet. I followed The Ultra Metabolism and Ultra Diet. I bought the correct supplements from the Dr. Hyman store. Menopause came and it was easier than any I have ever heard of.

This program did not just meet my expectations, it surpassed them! Several years before the beta, I was tested for food allergies. I had several allergies but the tests indicated that I had no problem with gluten or dairy. As a beta participant, among the things I gave up for six weeks, were gluten and dairy. During the program, there were a few times where I had off plan eating and consumed either gluten, dairy, or both. I was very surprised to discover that I have a problem with both of them.
Following the dietary recommendations alone produced dramatic results for me. Like many people, my family has a very modest budget with little room for additional things like supplements or gym memberships. I had only some of the recommended supplements because I just couldn’t afford to buy all of them, truthfully, not even half of them. One of my allergies is to corn and so I can’t buy just any supplement, even those that are from reputable companies; my supplements have to be corn free. With only minimal supplements and not much exercise beyond walking to and/or from work (about a 15 minute walk one way), with primarily only the dietary changes, I have had phenomenal results!
In six weeks, I’ve lost 15 pounds, six inches from my waist, three inches from my hips, and reduced both my BMI and waist to hip ratio. I now have more energy, much less pain and nearly no swelling in my extremities. But the most amazing thing of all is that I have reduced my overall insulin use by 75 units! In just six weeks! All of these changes have been the result of primarily dietary changes.
So don’t say “I can’t afford supplements so why bother trying the program” don’t say “I have no energy (or money) to exercise so why bother trying the program”. Start with just the dietary changes, you have control over what goes into your mouth and your body. Reduce consumption of, or eliminate entirely, the potential problem foods. You can do it. Just try it for six weeks. You will be amazed with how you feel and how you look. If you need some encouragement, try taking measurements every week around various parts of your body and record them on paper or in a spreadsheet. If you have a trusted loved on who can take swimsuit type of photos, take photos every couple of weeks in the same clothing in approximately the same position. By comparing the photos, you will be able to see just what is happening as your body reshapes into a better you. It is worth six weeks to see that you really can turn you health around. I cannot recommend this program enough.
After completing this program I feel better than I have in years. A lot of symptoms that I was attributing to menopause/aging (hot flashes, sore joints, fatigue, inability to concentrate/remember things) disappeared once I began this program. I lost 22 pounds and 5 inches off my waist in 8 weeks. I started at 218.5 and am now 196.5 and still losing. I got enough energy back to start exercising again. I am happier, calmer and less stressed than I have been in years. I feel like this program is helping me to save my own life. This program has exceeded my expectations.
I’m a loner and I’ve suffered in silence all my life rarely discussing how much emotional pain I was in from being overweight. I’ve learned to make comments and to even admit when I’m struggling. I lost nearly 13 pounds and reduced my BMI by nearly 3 points. I feel better than ever and am encouraged to continue this program until I reach my ultimate goal. So many of the recipes are delicious, nutritious, and quick to prepare. I think eating fresh, whole foods is simply wonderful! Even though I did not eat a lot of processed foods before participating, the program helped me eliminate the few I did use!!
I was so excited to begin this program and felt fortunate to be selected to participate. I began to see results about two weeks into the program and felt my stomach flatter than it had ever been!
However, right in the middle of it I got an acute sinusitis infection and had to take antibiotics, which threw my system off. I flushed it out with lots of water, but now I am experiencing severe joint pain and inflammation. My doctor was not receptive to be being on this program and did not order the suggested testing, but ordered other tests relating to the symptoms I am now experiencing.
I did manage to lose and have kept off the 7 lbs I lost. I am much more aware of how sugar can wreak havoc on health. I will continue to be on the program.
Once I had made the commitment to do the program, it was easy to get into the rhythm and follow through. I lost weight and more importantly feel good in my own skin. I plan to continue until I reach my goal weight, and truly believe it is possible, for the first time in years.
I am so grateful to have participated in the study. I’ve lost 19 pounds of weight, 8 inches from my waist alone. I am no longer taking any medications and it all happened within a few short weeks which included the biggest eating holiday we have.
I plan to continue with the program and share it all with my family and friends when the book is available to the public. I know I don’t have to be perfect–just make the best choices consistently and the results will come. If I can feel this much better by losing so few pounds in the correct way, I will be incredible when I each my goal.
This life style change has shown me that it isn’t necessary to beat myself up or be deprived in order to make huge changes in my health. Mobility and clarity out rank the pounds. The pounds will continue to fall away and leave good health as they do.
As they say–it’s not the destination but the journey that makes it all worthwhile. Getting to know other Beta testers has made the journey remarkable. A support network can make all the difference and the encouragement and kudos received from the Betas has kept me on the straight and narrow more than once. They’ve been a great social network for me.
I needed to drop a few pounds that had crept up on my middle aged body, when I was asked to participate in the beta study. I am also a dentist, who is concerned with the oral/systemic link: heart disease/diabetes/periodontal disease. Most diets are cold turkey restrictive, and cause all kinds of cravings for me when I feel deprived. This diet prepared me mentally, by learning to read labels and preparing my kitchen, and weaned me off of the caffeine/sugar substances so it was less traumatic than going cold turkey.
My favorite part of the diet was the morning shakes, which filled me up and reduced my hunger pangs midmorning. I also liked the suggestions for snacks, snap peas and hummus became my new chips and salsa. The recipes were tasty, and used lots of fresh items, along with quinoa, soy milk, and other things that were previously unfamiliar to me.
But now, I am confident that there has been a paradigm shift in mine and my family’s eating habits, which has created a lifestyle change! I also found I had very few cravings while on this diet, but consumed lots of food. I did not feel deprived. It was challenging being on the diet over Halloween, a trip to Las Vegas, and Thanksgiving, but I found it was easy to get back on track, after deviating. (No drinks in Vegas? Are you kidding?!)
I still lost 12 pounds in 6 weeks, which seemed easy! So not only did I lose weight, but I feel better and sleep better, too. Knowing the reasons behind the diet: to reduce inflammation, potential allergies, and prescription medications by making dietary changes appeals to me as a healthcare provider interested in obtaining optimum health. Why take chemicals, when you can do it naturally, by diet? Your body is like a machine. Make it operate most efficiently, by giving it the right fuel, which this diet does!
Within the first 2 weeks my blood pressure dropped significantly, my knees did not ache anymore, my hands were no longer swollen, and my self esteem was through the roof. I had lost hope of dropping any weight as I was getting older. It seemed impossible, until I did this program.
The weight loss was quick but not huge. I went from about 164 down to 155 in 6 weeks. I am still happy with that. This is a life long journey for me, the book taught me so much on how to properly nourish my body for maximum benefits… Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. I am grateful for the wealth of knowledge that has been given to me.
This program exceeded all expectations. I found it very easy to follow after the first week after getting all those cravings out of my system. I have realized that food is medicine and eating right makes aches/pains, allergies, fatigue, etc. just seem to disappear.

I feel more energetic, alert, focused. I do not have any cravings like I used to, don’t even crave carbs or sugar. No more headaches, no more heart palpitations due to elimination of caffeine. Over the past 13 years I lost 70 pounds, but was stuck. Kept gaining 10 and losing them, over and over. But couldn’t go lower, and still felt miserable. In the last few years, my doctor has been bugging me to take statins for my high-ish cholesterol. Last year, I succumbed and took them for about 6-months, but as I read more about them, I decided to take myself off after about 6-7 months. I read The UltraMind Solution in May and started the 6-week cleanse. I didn’t lose weight, but I liked the way I was eating, so I pretty much stayed on the program until I started The Blood Sugar Solution beta-test.
Between April and October of this year, my cholesterol went from 239 to 196. On the beta-test, I started preparing for the test 3-weeks before the actual start-date. When I ran out of bananas, I didn’t get any more, etc. As soon as I cut down the carbohydrates in my diet, my cravings and munchies went away – poof. I was sold.
No matter how much weight I lost, life without the monkey on my back is the best gift ever. I lost 10 pounds on the beta-test, including my three-week preparatory phase. When I started this program I weighed 247 I now weigh 188 and still going down. The weight came off easily. It was so easy to stick to this program and watching the weight fall off was amazing. I have stopped taking all medication and now my weight no longer fluctuates up and down 10 lbs. My skin looks great. I look 10 years younger. Symptoms I had are gone forever.
When you first read the proposed dietary changes Dr. Hyman recommends, the program sounds impossible. It’s not easy at first, but it’s possible. You have to change your mindset from “that’s what I’ve always eaten” to “this is what I will eat to regain my health”. I lost eleven pounds and 2 1/2 inches off my waist in 8 weeks. I never felt like I was starving. The cravings for sugar that used to control my life are gone. My new way of eating now seems automatic and I am happy to be on the path to a long and healthy life.
Before beginning The Blood Sugar Solution program I felt like I was in fairly okay shape other than my weight and pre-diabetes issues. When going through the questionnaires I realized that there was way more room for improvement in my health than I realized! Previously, I wasn’t sure that I’d ever be able to lose the weight.
Now that I’ve been on the program for 8 weeks I feel like I can and will lose the remaining weight and get to a place that is truly healthy for me and my body! The exciting thing is that the clothes I had put in a pile labeled “never be able to wear again” prior to this program, are now back in my closet and quite comfortable. I have gone from never wanting anything more than half a pot of coffee in the morning, to desiring breakfast first thing in the morning — and no caffeine required!
My stress level hasn’t subsided, but now I am alert upon waking, and ready for whatever the day wants to bring my way. When bedtime comes, I fall asleep easily, and stay asleep until the alarm goes off in the morning.
I lost 9 pounds and 14.75 inches. I lost 4 inches in my belly button measurement and 2.5 in the largest part of my belly. I now fit into smaller pants and look so much better in my clothes. Did I mention I also lost 2 inches off of my hips?
As the days went on with the program, my energy increased tremendously! I dress totally differently now. I am ditching my XL and baggy shirts. I do not have the folds and folds of belly fat that made me hide myself under baggy shirts and sweaters. I have a whole box of skinny clothes in my cellar that I can’t wait to tear into. It has been 5 years since I have worn some of those clothes.
I went on a business trip last week and I had to buy new clothes. My 17 year old daughter picked out my new clothes. I felt like a kid again trying on all of these fashionable, trendy clothes and my husband said he hadn’t seen that smile on my face when I came out of the dressing room and showed off each outfit. He said the look on my face was, “I look good and I know it.” He was right. I am crying now as I write this because I forgot what that felt like. I didn’t like myself and I hated how I looked. I had totally lost me. I happily bought over $300 worth of new clothes that day.
I went to Kansas City for a week of classes and meet and greet with corporate presidents and V.P.s and I felt great. I had so much confidence. I didn’t have to adjust my clothes all day in class to make sure my stomach and back fat weren’t showing. I didn’t have to keep covering my belly with my sweater. At 53 I was the oldest woman attending and I looked as good as 30 and 35 year olds attending.
When we got home 2 days ago my 17 year old daughter asked my husband when they didn’t know I was listening, “Was mom one of the best dressed?” My husband said, “No. She was dressed like everyone else. But she knew she looked good.” That meant the world to me. I was able to dress like other business people younger than me. And I did know that I looked good. I can actually look at myself in a mirror again and enjoy it. And I’m not done. I am still losing inches, weight and gaining energy.
Before this program I wondered how I would get through next year’s tax season. My days would be done by 6 p.m. I couldn’t wait to get into my pajamas and crawl into bed. At the accounting firm my husband and I own, we work from January 2 to tax day without a day off, day and night. It was brutal for me last year and my depression was horrible this year. I had totally given up on myself and my goals. I didn’t know how I would face another year.
I started drinking while on antidepressants and felt worse and got heavier. I have weaned myself off of Lexapro and on this program stopped my Zocor. I haven’t had a drink in 10 weeks and I don’t crave it at all. I signed up for an intensive 9 month online course in life coaching which will help me with the alternative healing practice I want to open.
I have my eye on the building across the street from our current business. I want to help other women realize it is never too late to get healthy and fulfill your dreams. I will continue to use food as my “farmacy” and pay it forward to other women who don’t know where to start.
When you have more energy you can handle the stress and obstacles that are thrown at you. Will it be a hard stressful year? Yes. Will I be able to handle it? Yes, thanks to Dr. Hyman and everything he has taught me with this book and his continued work. Now I say “Bring It!” Thank you so much Dr. Hyman for giving me my life back. I have a whole lifetime of goals to start at 53!
I followed the plan as best as I could (which is to say that I included bagels and ice cream in my diet) and I still lost 14 pounds and 3 1/2 inches at my waist. The program makes total sense and is something that I plan to stick to for the rest of my life since it’s in my best interest. After reading the book and experiencing the weight loss, it’s much easier to pass up potatoes and the bread basket. I don’t feel deprived – I feel empowered to make a better choice for myself.
My brother and I both have type 2 diabetes. He started the program over the summer lost 30 lbs and is off all meds. For my birthday he bought me the BSS book in April. I did not pick it up until the end of September. I read it and also bought the audio book to listen to on the way to work and back.
I went from 275 to 253 pounds in 4 weeks, I stopped all my meds (Meformin, Bydorian, Losartin, simvastain) and baby aspirin – all by stopping the diet I had been on for 42 years (the American diet). When I was diagnosed seven years ago I had a post meal blood sugar of 315; now with no meds it’s in the low 100’s.
I used to feel very lethargic not wanting to work out and getting into worse shape. It is a vicious cycle eating unhealthy food that makes you want to eat more and the meds that made me not want to work out. You must break both cycles. Eating the wrong types of food, I was addicted to bad carbs and unhealthy foods such as bagels (two with cream cheese for breakfast), pizza (sometimes eating 4 slices for lunch), and dinner was chicken parmesan and lots of pasta.
Now at 7 a.m. I have a vegan shake with vanilla extract, peanut butter, flax seed oil, PGX Daily, berries, and a small handful of spinach and a little kale. At 9 a.m. I eat a hard-boiled egg and smoked salmon. At noon I have ½ a large salad with chicken and the other half at 2:30 p.m. At dinner I eat a salad, broccoli, or red Swiss chard with olive oil and garlic, white cabbage with cannellini beans or zucchini and onions with marinara sauce. A favorite dinner is chicken breast with veggies, coconut milk, chicken broth, cumin, and curry or a turkey and three-bean chili. Snacks are almonds, pistachio, or cashew nuts.
Not only do you reset your metabolism with the BSS you reset your pallet. I am taking all the supplements on the advanced plan. A simple thank you to my brother or Dr. Hyman seems very inadequate for two people who basically saved your life.
In 1997, I saw my doctor for my annual physical. I mentioned, in passing, that I’d noticed some lumps down the sides of my neck. They weren’t obvious, painful or even uncomfortable, so I was just mildly curious about them.
My doctor ordered blood tests, and within a couple of days, she called me with a diagnosis of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I was 45 and our two children were still in school. At that time, getting a cancer diagnosis was automatically equated with a very poor prognosis, so I was terrified what this would mean to me and my family.
After a surgical biopsy confirmed the diagnosis, I saw my first oncologist, who told me there was nothing I could do about the cancer that was throughout my body. I would eventually need chemo, which would bring my white blood count down for awhile, then when it began to rise again, I’d have to switch to a different chemo because I’d have developed an immunity to the first by then, and so it would go for the rest of my life.
This is when I began to fine-tune my ability to listen to my own instincts, which were telling me that there certainly WAS something I could do to affect the cancer in my body. After a couple of visits with this oncologist, I realized this doctor was not interested in working with me toward better health, but instead was completely invested in her own regimen of cancer drugs. I never went back to her. Instead, I sought out medical professionals that were focused on healing from within and began to learn from them. Dr. Hyman has been one of those professionals.
Over the next couple of years, I did a complete “life review,” from emotions and relationships, to exercise and diet. I read dozens of books (including The UltraMind Solution), watched many different documentaries and TV specials (including Dr. Hyman on PBS) on nutrition and health (I still do this!), and went to every alternative medicine practitioner I could find to help me understand the mind/body connection. As a result, I learned to let go of emotional wounds I’d held onto for decades, learned skills to better deal with life’s stressors, and began to better understand nutrition and its tremendous importance in my life.
Now, 15 years later, I’ve gradually lost about 25 pounds, dropped my white blood count from over 25,000 to about 10,000 (normal range), reduced inflammation in joints, and I haven’t seen an oncologist in a few years. My focus has changed from tracking and worrying about my disease to listening to my body, seeking out the most healthful lifestyle and nutrition, and being happy and grateful for my life.
I can’t say that I’m glad I developed cancer, but I can say that this terrifying diagnosis gave me the push I needed to clean up my life and my health. Health is a journey, not a destination, and I’m so very grateful to be on the right road and have experts like Dr. Hyman to provide helpful and healthful advice.
I had been overweight from three years old until 30. Tried all the diets under the sun, but only had short-term results, and after getting off the diet put the weight back on and sometimes even more. After I read Dr. Mark Hyman’s UltraMetabolism book, about nine years ago, I learned how to eat healthy and how to make healthy eating a life-long habit, because one thing I have learned from my life-long dieting, is that you have to get on a diet that you can keep up for the rest of your life, otherwise it’s a struggle. I was sick and tired of being overweight and had nothing to lose trying out one more diet, but this time it was the right one; and I have lost about 50 pounds in less than a year.
Kept the weight off for four years, and then I decided to become a vegetarian. For three years, I have been a vegetarian but that didn’t work out for me, as I slowly I started to put some weight back on – about 15 pounds over the three years. In the same time, I had some dental work done – root canals, wisdom teeth pulled out, amalgam filling taken out without any protection (so I got heavy metal poisoning from that), and found mold in my bathroom and bedroom. All of these thing took a toll on my body weight and health. From a holistic doctor’s recommendation, I went on a high-fat, low-carb diet about seven months ago and all things got better, including my weight coming down.
Now, I am on the Eat Fat, Get Thin program and for the first time in my life, I am not hungry all the time. My biggest problem with dieting was my constant hunger, the worst was when I was a vegetarian. Since I began eating lots of healthy fats, my hunger is gone, I never wake up hungry and I never go to bed hungry. I only have three meals a day (before I used to have four to six meals), my portion sizes went down naturally, cravings are gone, energy level has never been this high, and my mental focus is amazing. Healthy eating and regular exercise is a part of my everyday life and my job, too.
Once you develop healthy lifestyle habits and you experience how being healthy and fit feels, you never want to go back to being sick, tired and overweight. Nothing tastes as good as being healthy and fit feels.

Growing up, I ate anything that I wanted. I ran on Dr. Pepper, sugary cereal and everything with extra cheese. In my early 20s, I was still skinny but things changed. The energy that I had seemed to vanish, and I was exhausted and irritable most of the time. I developed terrible allergies, battled skin rashes, swollen eyes, headaches, asthma and chronic bronchitis. I also suffered from horrible PMS and painful ovarian cysts.
I never thought that it could have anything to do with food or exercise. I would have eaten crap forever. Except, I started putting on weight. I did what I had always heard you were supposed to do, I started eating low-fat foods – crackers and cookies that said low-fat right on the box. I ate cuisine that was lean, added up points and had big boxes of horrible food delivered to me. It seemed no matter what I tried, I was always hungry.
I resigned myself to the fact that I would live the rest of my life on allergy, asthma and blood pressure medicine. However, I also did my best to be invisible and started playing really small in many areas of my life. It was okay, until all of a sudden, it wasn’t.
In two years, we had four family members die. Even my cat died. It was more than I could process. I completely shut down and gained 25 more pounds that year and my blood pressure skyrocketed. Three years later, I had my second child. I weighed 170 pounds when she was born. I am 5 foot and 1 inch tall.
Just two months before my daughter’s first birthday, I was overwhelmed with a feeling of sadness. At 42, I had everything that I said I ever wanted, but I was exhausted, overworked and my marriage was imploding. I saw one of your programs on PBS and decided to give the 10-Day Detox a try. I cried the first three days, but by day 10, I had lost nine pounds and felt amazing.
I started on September 7th, and by Halloween, I looked like a completely different person. By Thanksgiving Day, I weighed 113 pounds.
Reading The UltraSimple Diet a little over 3 years ago was the catalyst to a complete transformation of my health. That was my first experience using nutrition to heal my body and it worked. It led me to do some gut healing and eventually led me to attend IIN and Holistic Nutrition Lab so that I can help others find healing in the same way I did.
I first found Dr. Hyman after being diagnosed with autoimmune hives and googling “cures for autoimmune disease.” I had a baby nine months before, couldn’t lose any baby weight, had terrible cystic acne, and zero energy. Dr. Hyman’s program led me to discover that I had some pretty serious food intolerance’s – I dropped about 40 pounds and cleared up the acne.
I owe my life to Dr. Hyman and hope to one day shake his hand and express my gratitude to him for all that he has done for the field of Functional Medicine and helping people like me who were told there was nothing to do but take more and more medicine.
First, I’d like to thank Dr. Hyman for saving my life…you see, I lost both of my older brothers to obesity and bad health. They were 43 and 50 when they died of heart attacks. My father had his first of three heart attacks at 43 years of age, eventually dying at age 69 after many health issues. We were the typical American family, believing the so-called experts with their “food pyramid” and low-fat diet recommendations. Not my mom’s fault, she just had bogus information.
I remember the stack of white bread next to the tub of margarine on the table for almost every meal. As a kid, I can recall eating at least six slices of oleo-laden toast dunked in cocoa for breakfast. So, when I found myself, at age 57, with the “triple whammy” of metabolic syndrome, a weight of 360 pounds and 54-inch waist, and sleep apnea, I knew I was headed down a path to my own early demise. My blood pressure and heart rate were way out of control and my cardiologist added more medications.
That’s when I saw Dr. Hyman on PBS with the Eat Fat, Get Thin program. I felt like he was talking directly to me…so I bought the book and have changed the way I eat forever!! In following the Eat Fat, Get Thin guidelines, I have lost 74 pounds of fat!!! In only 18 weeks!! My goal is to get down to my high school weight of 220 pounds.

Dr. Mark Hyman and his work have changed my life in a way that is difficult to describe. My health journey started by just cutting back the sugar. In the summer of 2014, after carrying extra weight around for a couple of years, those extra pounds had finally caught up to me. I knew I had to start making some changes somewhere. I didn’t know the game plan as of yet, but I was going to do something!
My New Year’s s resolution of 2015 was to take care of my health. First things first, I started with my dental health. During my recovery time, a documentary that I had been wanting to see was finally available for rental. One that was just the subject I knew I needed to learn more about. What else are you doing after oral surgery? Sleeping, reading and watching TV. That documentary was Fed Up.
Enter Dr. Hyman
I didn’t know the impact that he would have on my health a few months later, but after watching Fed Up, I was inspired to keep this sugar out of my body. Most importantly, my girls. Our family. What was I doing to my children with all of the crap we were eating? I had to improve my health to be better for them, to be able to teach them about food that I didn’t know anything about, so they didn’t end up like me. And what I learned from Fed Up is that it could happen even earlier in their lifespan.
Dr. Hyman did show up again a few months later on the Dr. Oz Show at a time when I needed him. I had been successful losing around 60 pounds by just cutting out my excess sugar. What a total transformation! Alas, I was still having some digestive issues that hadn’t improved, even though I was eating so much better. Or so I thought. Listening to Dr. Hyman explain gluten sensitivity, I felt I had a lot of the different symptoms.
Feel Like Crap Syndrome! Dr. Hyman had me at “Feel like crap.” This is just what I had been saying. I. Feel. Like. Crap!
Eat Fat Get Thin.
By March of this year I was down 80 pounds when I started the 21-day program. Cutting out the gluten – that made a significant difference! Though, I felt as if I needed a nutritional guide to fine-tune my forever diet. That is where Eat Fat, Get Thin comes into play. I am still having some digestive issues, so I am moving slowly down the Pegan road. All I can say is, learning how and what to eat from Dr. Hyman has been so beneficial for me and my family. Well, that project is in progress. 🙂
I have felt so lost about nutrition. We have to learn, all over again, what we should be eating and what to avoid. That is the hard part. That is the true gift of Dr. Hyman’s work.
Seven years ago, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Since then, my blood sugars have fluctuated, but over the last three years, I have watched them gradually increase to unacceptable levels, no matter what I did with regard to food and exercise. If I could get my fasting blood glucose under 10, it was a good day – and this is with two types of medication.
Today, after being on the Eat Fat, Get Thin plan for three weeks, I had my lowest score in three years – 7.1, and still dropping by the day. I am so thankful! The blood work does not lie! I’m going for a medication review in three weeks and anticipate reducing the number of tablets I take.
UPDATE: This has changed my health so dramatically in such a short time, I would love to inspire others to give it a go. Yesterday afternoon, I tested my blood sugar levels on a whim (because I was feeling that “I need to eat” sensation), and the reading was 5.8! This is nothing short of a phenomenal drop. I will be ceasing some of my medications very soon; and if this continues, I hope to actually reverse all the symptoms of type 2 diabetes and get off medication altogether.

I’ve done all the diets – Adkins, Weight Watchers, Zone, South Beach, to name a few. When I would come off of those diets, the weight would creep back on, sometimes plus a few pounds.
Following the guidelines of the 10-Day Detox eliminated my cravings and allowed me to stick with long-term weight loss. Learning about the science of our food and sugar cravings helped with sticking with it.
Following The Blood Sugar Solution book’s Advanced Plan helped me end panic attacks, restless legs syndrome and lifelong chronic allergies (that no medical treatments had ever helped). And, I lost over 50 pounds. I followed the plan and took two years to make all the dietary changes, between early 2012 and early 2014. I’ve continued the dietary guidelines ever since.
I decided to do the Eat Fat, Get Thin 21-day challenge in January after reading Eat Fat, Get Thin and The Blood Sugar Solution. I spent the month of December getting the recommended supplements and locating the foods needed. When I realized there was a challenge, I signed up and purchased the plus program and the prepackaged supplements were really handy to bring on vacation!
Can’t remember the exact measurements, but I know I lost 15 pounds and was thrilled with that. My wife also did the challenge with me, and she lost 13 pounds. I am down on my insulin usage, which pleases me greatly. My wife was amazed that her hip pain was gone after one week with no sugar (she admitted to overloading a bit to finish her Christmas stocking candy before we started the diet!).
We have been very pleased with the diet and brought our frozen organic grass-fed meats with us on vacation and are planning on staying on the 21-day challenge until we lose all the excess! We did make the fudge for Valentine’s but that will be our primary treat for the holiday. Thanks for an interesting program. We had pre-ordered the cookbook and have been using lots of the recipes.
Anyway, we have been pleased with the challenge and will enjoy the support as we get more into it!
The following is a story I wanted to share with you about how your book, Eat Fat, Get Thin, changed my life:
I’ve been a runner for most of my young adult life. I started in track in middle school and eventually worked my way up to being on the varsity cross country team in high school. Throughout college, I maintained my shape and continued to run every day. However, with all the miles I was running, I thought it gave me an excuse to eat more; and I actually ended up overcompensating for the calories I was burning. After I graduated college, I continued to run and eat at the same level I did in college and suddenly started gaining weight, ending up at around 185-190 pounds. I was running 35 to 40 miles per week but wasn’t losing any weight, which surprised a lot of people including my family members.
Since I started college, I’ve been running half-marathons and now have completed over 20 of them. But in April of 2016, I had a big wake-up call. I was running in a local race here in Kansas City when one of my knees suddenly began to buckle and my thighs became extremely tight, to the point where I had trouble even walking. I was able to finish the race, but it was that point in time when I decided that I wanted to get serious about losing the weight, so I emailed my running coach and he recommended your Book: Eat Fat, Get Thin.
On the Sunday after the race, I decided to implement two strategies: I ordered a DVD Series from Men’s Health called the 21-Day Metashred and also ordered Eat Fat, Get Thin. Over the course of the next few weeks, I followed the exercise routine from Men’s Health to the letter and also followed your 21-day plan using all of the recipes in the book. I lost 15 pounds very quickly, which turned into 20 pounds lost about 7 weeks after my lifestyle changes. Over the course of the next few months, I lost another 10 pounds and ended up losing around 30 pounds total.
I realized that, after losing all the weight, changing my diet and eating more healthy fats allowed me to lose weight faster. What is more surprising, is how I’ve managed to cut all refined carbohydrates out of my diet and still have the energy to train, running 40 to 50 miles a week. It wasn’t easy at first, but I was determined to succeed. The results of my weight loss have resulted in new personal best finishes in a 5K (17:57), 10K (38:03) and half marathon (1:27:54). I’ve kept the weight off for almost a year and don’t plan to change my diet anytime soon.
The reason I wanted to share my story is because I know that many runners have the misconception that they need to eat refined carbohydrates to perform at a peak level and that running many, many miles gives people the excuse to overeat. I’m living proof that it is simply not the case. Eating lean and clean is the key to weight loss and high athletic performance.
The 10-Day Detox Diet changed the way I think about food. I learned the difference between real food and food products, that real foods heal, and that “junk” is addictive and makes you fat. The detox allowed me to break the addictions, which gave me the ability to make better choices about what I eat. I struggled with weight all of my adult life, gaining, losing, gaining, losing. When I reached my mid-50s, I noticed that I was gaining more and losing less each time and so I just gave up the fight. By the time I was 59, I weighed 225 pounds and was in constant pain. I experienced sciatic nerve pain in my hips and right leg. I also had lower back pain and aches in my joints. I could not stand for more than a few minutes at a time without needing to lean on something. I could not walk up a flight of stairs without stopping halfway to catch my breath. I had very little energy and had all but lost my enthusiasm for life. I was very sad and had no desire to fail at another diet.
I used all of my energy to work each day and when I would get home, I would sit and eat because that’s all I felt like doing. Ice cream, candy, cookies, chips – these were a few of my favorite things. I was a junk food junkie!
I began the Detox in the summer of 2015 as a last-ditch effort to try to feel better and hopefully lose some weight. I had turned 60 in April and was feeling very old! I am a kindergarten teacher, and I was wondering if I was going to be able to keep up the pace of working with young children for much longer.
I committed to trying this Detox for 10 days. I felt so much better after 10 days that I decided to commit to 30 more days. And I just kept it up!
I was feeling more energetic, weight was coming off, and I was not experiencing any food cravings. I noticed I was more alert, I could walk up the stairs without stopping, and ALL my pain was gone! I was sleeping well at night and waking up feeling great, without the load of guilt I had carried for years about my weight. That’s when it clicked! I was NOT on a diet! I was eating delicious healthy food. I was happy, satisfied and not at all deprived! Why would I stop eating this way? And living?!
Now my question is, how can I help others? I get many questions about how I have lost so much weight and what kind of diet I’m on. I’m happy to share that I am not on a diet but have learned what to eat! I am always looking for opportunities to teach others, young and old, who are discouraged about their weight, appearance and declining health.
I first started using The Daniel Plan in March of 2015. I lost 20 pounds, but i soon stopped and gained 13 pounds back.
Then in February of 2016, I started over with The Daniel Plan 10-day detox and started losing the weight again. I also started using your book, Eat Fat, Get Thin. I have since lost a total of 61 pounds. I think the use of healthy fats really helped. My ultimate goal is to lose 9 more pounds. I started at 208 pounds and my waist was 41 inches, and now I am 147 pounds and my waist is 32 inches.
I feel 100% better. I no longer become out of breath when walking up stairs, and I feel I can keep up with my daughter’s activities again. I am 53-years old and I was able to lose weight during menopause.
Thank you for this wonderful program. I believe that I will be better prepared to maintain my weight because of the education of learning how to eat healthfully – from reading labels to understanding what is in our food and how our food choices affect our bodies. I tell people it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle change of choosing the right food to eat and learning how to eat for life.
I’m looking forward to living a healthier lifestyle as I age. I want to be an active senior that feels great and can do things when we retiree and not be stuck at home because of health reasons.
I started changing my eating habits from the moment I read Dr. Hyman’s book, The Blood Sugar Solution. This book literally changed my life. I have type 2 diabetes and was at 240 pounds when I began the program. In the last six months, I lost 38 pounds. My A1C went from a 9 to a 6, and I am no longer anemic, B12 deficient and so tired. My energy level is great, and I feel great. My blood pressure is normal now – 120/80, and I predict to be off all meds within one year or less.
I have worked hard to eliminate all processed foods from my diet and sugar as much as possible. My eating habits went from huge portions of bread, rice, pasta, french fries, takeout Chinese food, pizza and burgers to more mindful eating: salads, smoothies, fruit, veggies of all kinds, healthy soups, yogurt, coconut milk, sauerkraut, hummus, beans, eggs, real butter, avocado, nuts, seeds and grass-fed meats. I combine the right foods together with lemon water, salads and veggies every day and do not eat anything fried anymore. I only cook with olive and coconut oils, and I reduced my overall red meat intake. I love cooking healthfully with my husband and finding new recipes to try. Now, I love shopping for food – especially vegetables. I went from a 22 pant size to an 18 and recently, fit into a size 16 when I brought the wrong size home thinking it was an 18!
My entire mindset has changed for the better, thanks to Dr. Mark Hyman for inspiring me to get well and work on becoming healthy and diabetes-free. I still have over 50 pounds to lose but know I am getting there.
When I think back on my childhood, my adolescence and a portion of my adulthood, I can’t help but think: Fat. I was overweight from a very young age. I remember being lethargic, and I also remember suffering from all sorts of skin issues. I developed an autoimmune disease at a very young age, and this autoimmune disease led to allergic reactions to the sun, the ocean, to lotions, to pool water and the list goes on. I related the summertime to pain. As an adult, I developed several food allergies.

The seminar was called “Is Sugar Addictive?” The name of the seminar confirmed our need to attend the seminar.
We both knew we were addicted to sugar. We attended the seminar, met Dr. Hyman, purchased the book and decided to commit 100% – all in the same day. Not only would we commit to the 10-day detox, we were in for the 90-day detox. We decided to cut sugar, processed foods, dairy and caffeine. We changed our diet from a SAD diet to one full of organic, nutritious foods. Foods that were full of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Foods that decreased inflammation and led to a healthier life.

I am a 49 year old white male living in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Six months ago I received a letter from my doctor suggesting I get rechecked for my fasting blood glucose because it was at 183 and he indicated that I probably had diabetes. I immediately went into panic mode because I had always dreaded the possibility of getting diabetes from being overweight but now the reality looked me straight in the face.
The first thing I did was go online and start researching diabetes. I discovered your book The Blood Sugar Solution and was encouraged by the possibilities of reversing my condition. First I went through all my food and eliminated everything that contained sugar, anything that was processed, starchy food like potatoes, basically everything you recommend in your book.

Since the end of June 2012 I have been on this diet and recently had a physical November 30th 2012 where I had more blood work done and to my delight all my labs came back perfectly normal with a fasting blood glucose level of 91. My husband and I read The Blood Sugar solution and began the process of changing our lives to better health. To say the least, it has been life changing for us both and on multiple levels.

I am 58 years old and have suffered with lung problems all my life. In 2011 I was finally diagnosed by UC Davis as having PCD (Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia). I am down to 30% lung function and get respiratory lung infections from every other month to every 2 months depending on the weather. Infections include but are not limited to: Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and Strep Pneumonis.
Before going on this detox diet I mostly prayed to be able to go to sleep and not wake up. I was so tired of being sick. The fatigue was overwhelming, and all my activities were so limited by not being able to breathe well. I could no longer live by any schedule because I had to wait to see how I would feel in the morning. Some days I just stayed in my nightgown and rested on the couch all day.
When I was sick with infections sometimes my breathing was so bad that just the movement of my arms as I tried to do dishes would make me so out of breath that I’d have to just sit down and take more nebulizer treatments.
Because I wanted to do some things as a wife for the house I used a lot of Pepsi and Viverin just so I’d have a little energy to make a meal or pay bills.
I just want you to know that I have been addicted to Pepsi since I was 16 years old. I started using Viverin daily since 1979. Since becoming so ill, I often used it 2 to 3 times a day. I justified the use of it because I read in a pamphlet at the lung specialist office that caffeine was good for opening the airways. Despite using the soda and Viverin, I was still tired.
Today is my 11th day on the diet. Later this month I have an appointment with my doctor to get the blood testing done that you recommended before getting real strict with the diet. So I have been casual about following the food guidelines, cheating on the no, no’s once in a while, but sticking to a lot of the things I should be doing.
Despite my cheating, I am walking, I can sometimes twice a day. That is hard since I get so out of breath just going short distances. I also try to do slower exercises to work muscles that do not require a lot of exertion.
In 10 days I have lost 5.8 lbs., 2.5″ in off my waist, and 2.25″ off my hips.
Because I have eliminated the soda, Viverin, dairy and grains for the most part, I can’t believe how much better I am feeling already! I have natural energy most of the day now. I am feeling I may actually regain some of my life that I thought was forever gone. I am no longer resigned to die, complaining that death is not coming soon enough to put me out of my misery.
I don’t know how much lung function I will get back but I am already doing better than I have in so long. In fact, I am feeling this improvement in spite of having yet, another lung infection.
So when I get all my testing done, I will be completely on your program, as much as I can physically, as my body allows. In the meantime I am acquainting myself with the recipes and preparing my kitchen, cabinets, and the freezer for better success.
My husband is even doing some of this program with me. He is trying to come with me when he can on my little walks. That makes me feel so good.
Dr. Hyman, thank you for putting your book out there to educate others, I even bought the book on CD to learn faster. In my case I truly feel it is my last hope. I don’t expect this diet to rid me of my lung disease, but if I can live my life with “quality of living” instead of just wanting the suffering to be over with, then I feel all this will have been a success.

I am a 49 year old woman. I have been on every diet there is known to man. I did not consider my self an overweight person, but I was not living a healthy lifestyle.
My husband and I moved to our beach house on Salisbury beach and let’s just say….”the party began.” We started drinking and eating like it was our job. We had this “we deserve this, because we have been through a lot” attitude.
On Feb. 9, 2013, we had a bad storm and we were hit by a thirty foot rogue wave. We lost everything in a flash. That’s when we really started to indulge. The eating and drinking was way out of control. My children started to notice the change in us and encouraged us to find other things to do. I knew what we were doing was bad, but it didn’t matter. Food and alcohol were our drugs of choice. I thought it was helping us…needless to say, it was destroying our health, spirit, and relationship.
Fast forward to March 10, 2014, my start day for yet I thought was another “diet” book. I was so wrong. I had my list and I was off to the grocery store. Let’s just say it was a challenge. I called my mother and said, “Oh my God, I don’t go down the aisles of the store! Everything I can eat is on the outside.” I walked down the aisles because they were familiar to me. I looked at all the things I used to purchase and I could not believe what I was putting in my body. No wonder I was having anxiety.
I think my favorite part of my new journey is writing in my journal. I could not believe the emotions it brought up for me. I felt scared, angry, and alone. By the third day my journal was filled will anger and tears. By the fifth day I felt better, but still nervous. I rested as much as I could, drank lots of water, and meditated. Slowly I started to feel like I was regaining control. I realized I am the person to get my family healthy and on the right track again. My son looks in the refrigerator and can’t believe all the green veggies. The best thing about it, is I make my morning shake and my husband and son are waiting for theirs as they head out the door for work. When I oversleep, they wake me up to make them one. I LOVE IT! I have my girlfriends and sister asking “What are you doing? You look amazing!” I think I might start a “Ten Day” support group.
Dr. Hyman, I don’t know what to tell you. I am so happy and excited to continue my journey. I always have helped others and want to tell the world about what I am doing. For now, I need to take care of myself and then help the world.

Having grown up in the 70’s fed by a mother who bought the latest and greatest prepared and snack foods, I fought obesity from childhood losing large amounts of weight twice in my life; once as a teen through long term starvation that wrecked my metabolism and once five years ago by injecting hcg I bought over the Internet from India while eating 500 calories a day for nine straight months. The hcg destroyed one of my ovaries and I gained all the weight back plus 20 lbs when I stopped injecting.
At 52-years-old I was riddled with stiffness and tenderness from the hairline on the back of my neck to the base of my spine. I literally could not tie my shoes without groaning loudly all the way down and all the way back up. A typical day consisted of painfully showering, dressing and going to Starbucks for a 16 oz latte. Then I’d work my office job, where I struggled through back and hip pain for eight hours, breaking for a store-bought sandwich or a salad smothered in bottled dressing for lunch, munching on chocolate candy in the afternoon; then coming home, eating a quart of ice cream, and throwing myself across the bed where I stayed until the next morning.
I was spending 12 to 14 hours a day on my bed because I had no energy and it hurt too much to move, but it also hurt to stay still. Doctors offered pills and diagnosis like “fibromyalgia” but I knew my pain was inflammation and deep down I knew it was all diet-related. I just didn’t know how to get a grip on the situation. Then one Sunday afternoon while channel surfing from my bed, I came across your lecture on a PBS fundraiser. I knew immediately that what you were saying was right. I listened to every word and bought your book the next day. I read it from cover to cover in one weekend and decided to do the 10-Day Detox, and do it all the way.
I took a week’s vacation from work so I could concentrate solely on me, myself and the detox. I gathered everything I needed and began on Saturday March 22, 2014. I followed your instructions to the letter and was shocked to realize about 24 hours in that this was a TRUE detoxification the same as if I was quitting pills or heroin. I was so physically ill with flu-like symptoms all day Sunday (the second day), but I knew this was my body withdrawing from caffeine and sugar, so I stuck with it. Monday I felt a little better and by Tuesday I felt pretty darn good!
I took my walks, took my baths, got my rest, and most of all I cooked and cooked and cooked like I hadn’t done in years! It’s quite a switch from picking up an Italian submarine sandwich on the way home to washing, peeling, chopping, sautéing, roasting, baking, and truly enjoying good, wholesome food. It takes a lot of time; time I never thought I’d spend in the kitchen before this. You can’t get me out of there now though, because the pay-off has been unbelievable!
At the end of my 10-Day Detox I decided to just stay with the plan. Why not? I don’t feel deprived. I’m becoming a pretty good cook. Most of all, I feel at least 10 years younger, no exaggeration. Dr. Hyman, I cannot express my gratitude to you for this program. I have ZERO body stiffness. No back pain. No hip pain. Here’s the best part: I have oodles of energy I thought was gone for good. It’s no longer difficult for me to get up in the morning and when I come home from work, I’m often doing laundry, cooking, cleaning or tackling a household project for three to four hours after dinner. I feel GREAT! The only one not happy about this is my cat. She’s lost her napping partner!
I know from years of dieting and doctors that I have (or had) reactive-hypoglycemia (pre-diabetes) and weight loss resistance, so I don’t drop pounds like many people might , but I DID lose five pounds from the original 10-Day-Detox and it appears I’ve lost another 5 since then. I’m very happy about the 10 pound drop, but I don’t focus on the weight, which is the opposite of any diet I’ve ever done before. The reason for that is, I’m not doing this to lose weight. I’m doing this to feel healthy and alive again! Weight loss is going to be a nice side effect to my new lifestyle in the same way weight gain was a side effect to my poor eating habits before.

One night about two months ago I picked up my remote to turn it off and go to bed when the program playing caught my attention because I heard the words “break you sugar addiction…” I sat down and began listening to what the speaker was saying. It was late and I needed to get up early so I taped the PBS program. The next day I watched it…hearing my story in Dr. Hyman’s words. I mulled everything I heard over for a day, then made the decision to order the 10 Day Detox book and do the program.
I had the book for over two weeks, devouring it, making lists of things I’d need…which was everything because I’ve never taken any kind of supplements and never thought to drink any water. As a result of my lifestyle, I found myself a 70 year old shriveled up, wrinkled, dry alligator skinned of an old woman with a large sugar belly. And exercise… not an iota of interest. But I knew I needed to do something or I’d soon end up like most of the 70 year olds around me in my retirement community. I, too, have tried multiple diet programs with great success initially, but soon succumbed to my sugar addiction, and eventually the pounds and belly would come because every one of the programs, which sold their own products to use in their diets, contained loads of sugar.
I went into the detox with a firm understanding and conviction that I HAD to follow your program. I’m very glad I read all of your book before beginning your program because I never dreamed I could be so sick for the 2nd and 3rd day. But I kept yours words in mind…”It means the program is working…” and got through it. I loved the food in the detox book as well as the 10 Day Detox Cookbook, although I stuck with your recipes until I finished the detox. I followed the program to a tee, including the nightly soaks, which have become a part of my nightly ritual before going to bed.
I did not loose but 3 pounds and only a couple of inches, but my belly is going down…still have a bit to go yet.
The most important and noticeable change in me is my skin. I faithfully drink 10+ glasses of water a day now and have learned to love water and my skin has gone from crinkled, dried up leather to supple, moist, soft, 15 years younger looking skin. My friends are even commenting on the difference in my face….far less wrinkles. I have learned that the key to softer, younger looking skin is hydration!
As for exercise, I get up in the morning, walk and feed my little dog, then don my walking shoes and head out the door. It was really hard the first few days, but after that I began enjoying the walk. I challenged myself with the interval training you suggested. I’ve increased my distance three times over in the past three weeks. My reward each morning is a delicious protein shake, either from your book or the cookbook.
Over the years I’ve all but stopped cooking. This program has brought back the joy of cooking again and now my shelves are stocked with healthy ingredients to create delicious meals and there is NO sugar in my home. I wasn’t even tempted last Easter Sunday when the family went out to eat and all sat around eating ice cream (my personal choice of poison in the past) and cup cakes. There was also a wedding in the midst of my detox and I did succumb to a few bites of one of the wedding cupcakes… it made me so sick I threw it up. Validation for me that there is no going back there again! I’m on the path I’ve been searching for so many years.
Thank you for my new lease on life….I’m living proof that it can even have gigantic results for a person 7 decades old.
My mind is clearer than it has been in years and I am happier than I have been in years. I saw the difference in my eyes and sleeping when I truly stuck with the program fully and took the offending items (sugar) out of my diet.
I had a lot of things wrong with me, vertigo mainly and I saw how gluten and my digestive system did not go together. I understand what I need to do now, I have the tools to make better decisions and I want to make better decisions for myself for the first time in a long time.
I want better for myself, I deserve it. My mind is clearer than it has been in years and I am happier than I have been in years. I want to totally recover my health and I will continue this program working with my functional doctor because I have so many health issues. This will take time, but I am committed to this.

I just turned 46 in August, and I have spent too many of those years morbidly obese and yo-yo dieting. I reached 385.8 pounds. That was a scary number to me, so close to 400 pounds. I was so very unhappy with myself. I couldn’t hardly tie my shoes or cut my own toenails. I couldn’t fit into chairs with arm rests or into booths in restaurants. And forget clothes shopping. That’s never fun at that size. At my heaviest, I was having some female problems. I was anemic, exhausted and not feeling good.
I was scheduled to have a hysterectomy to take care of my issues. The anesthesiologist came into the room to meet me and discuss my procedure. He took one look at me and said he would not put me under. I was too high of a risk. So I had to have a different procedure done under a spinal tap. That was my wake-up call and the slap in the face that I needed.
I started thinking about what we, as humans, were meant to eat. What our bodies were designed to eat. I kept coming back to plants and animals. Not packaged junk and sugar. I saw the documentary “Fed Up” and that was a huge eye opener for me. It finally all clicked in my brain. Everything that had eluded me for years was suddenly crystal clear. I ran right out and bought your book – Eat Fat, Get Thin – just as soon as it came out. I have shared both the documentary and the book with all who will listen to me.
In 60 weeks, I have not measured any portions, I have not hit the gym once and I have not taken any medications but I have managed to lose 101.8 pounds and am now at 284 pounds by diet alone. I have another +100 pounds to go but this time I know I am going to get there. I know this is not a diet. This is my lifestyle, and I could never imagine going back. Nope not ever. I never thought I could give up the processed carbs and junk, but you know what? I don’t even miss any of it. I feel healthier than ever, and I am excited for the future. For my future healthier me. I didn’t purchase the plan myself, a friend of mine did. He didn’t like it and opted for bariatric surgery. He failed at that, and I’m successful. A real ego booster. I have a new life again, out of a wheelchair living life to the fullest.
I have lupus so the results were not miraculous, but they were a relief. Most of my joint pains improved. Heartburn is gone. I can sleep better. I currently am taking less naproxen. I have been trying to get my husband to ditch dairy, gluten and sugar for years as I know it plays a role in his health. As a nutritionist I run a 21 Day Gluten, Dairy and Sugar free online Challenge where I help people get off these foods the healthy way. This program has helped me identify food and lifestyles changes that have helped me feel better, act better and look better. I have been struggling with my weight my whole life. Eliminating “trigger” foods from my diet and taking the supplements has armed my body with the ammunition it needs to prevent disease. I believe you are what you eat and this program has optimized this! I plan on sharing this program with many of my friends to help them with their health issues.
My blood sugar which was over 300 at diagnosis dropped to 195..then 185..then 146. After eating, my blood sugar two to three hours later was 157 not the 337 of three years ago. My A1C dropped to 8.7 from 11.6 three years ago when diagnosed. I am so happy to have participated because this program gave me power to make decision about my health that improved it in such a short time. The online support group gave me others to connect with so that you didn’t ever feel alone in your endeavor on the program. What phenomenal people from all over the country I have met! I have always hated it when someone says ..”Oh you’re a diabetic!” No NO NO I am a person living with diabetes. I am a person first not a diagnosis…and online this fact was born out every single day…so inspiring to see myself and others take back control of their life and health choices and learn that this condition is Reversible. My family is becoming more aware too! They have switched from white bread to whole wheat or whole grain. This is a small beginning but a good step in the right direction.
The supermarket is just a marketing gimmick…I was so aware to start with of food that is processed but this book took that awareness to a heightened level. I began to realize that the Poisoning of America is legalized and that a country with our resources should be able to do better. If lobbyists can twist legislation so that we have to eat unhealthy processed foods then I can take back the power and choose to avoid those foods..and I can do as well as others so that one person at a time we all make a difference. Even after all this time, I learned much more about his approach. As a 10-year patient of Dr. Hyman, I was intrigued when he said that The Blood Sugar Solution book would be good for me when it came out. I was thrilled to later get into the Beta. Even after all this time, I learned much more about his approach.
This is a solid program. It requires a serious commitment, but your health should be a serious commitment. Once you start it, you will notice positive changes very soon. Those quick changes in your body and mood make it easier to stick with the program, even when you feel like it is too much work or too hard. Join the community- they will help you through it. My husband and I have been married for 46 years. Within 2 weeks of starting this program, we found ourselves much more interested in one another –more conversation, and more physical affection. Three family members did the program. My husband is almost down to his high school weight. My daughter and I both lost over ten pounds each. Our clothes fit better. We are more able to concentrate, are more physically active and get more done. I like to think our increased attentiveness allows us to get along better with one another. Drinking the tea, broth, and eating nuts and using olive oil seem to keep us from feeling hungry.
It is an excellent exercise to look at how drastically we all should be changing our diets. I have felt great on the program.

I don’t think the average American realizes just how addicted they are to sugar. This addiction will come fully to light when it is eliminated from the diet in the first week of the program! I lost 10lbs. and 2 inches from my waist in the first 4 weeks, and found a zest for life that I had lost a long time ago. My productivity at work skyrocketed because I had energy and mental clarity. It was a surprise that since my last blood work 3 years ago, I was no longer “pre-diabetic”. I had been using information from your other books for a few years. I do think sugar caused a lot of pain and inflammation in my body. I do feel better when I don’t eat sugar.
I lost 4 pounds, all bloating disappeared, and I slept great while I was adhering to the program. Felt a surge of joy and laughed easily. My care giving responsibilities made it difficult to stay with the program though.
I found this program to be well-designed for independent use. Everything was laid out in a user-friendly format that anyone could follow. I look forward to reading the published version.

I’ve lost inches so I look so much better. I have more energy, I am excited about life. I’m emotionally stable. I enjoy my food and it’s not the enemy. Food is my medicine. I didn’t take pictures because in the past on other programs I did and nothing changed so I resisted doing it. But people’s faces when they see me is good enough. And I bought clothes just before the program and they were very tight. Not now! I’m looking good in my jeans. I have room for fingers at the waistband.
I feel so much better when I don’t eat gluten or dairy or sugar. I am so happy that I found this book and was able to attempt to stay off these foods for six weeks. Whenever I added them back in, I could feel the negative results they have on my body. I strongly believe we have a serious problem in this society with the way we eat. I am happy to find some people who don’t think it is extreme to cut out flours and sugars and dairy from the diet. I would like to see this type of eating accepted more universally. It was easy, I was never hungry, I have 100% more energy, my mind is so clear. I did not lose an outrageous amount of weight in 6 weeks, but I lost almost everything in my waist and need all new clothes!! I definitely had a problem with inflammation; the weight was just the most obvious symptom. All of my aches, pains, breathing problems, fatigue, and brain fog were all very non specific symptoms of the inflammation that I never associated with my diet. I always felt I ate a healthy diet, mostly veggie, mostly organic, but way too much sugar in pastas, fruit, juices, too much soy, too much cheese, and too few green veggies.
Although choosing to restrict food intake to improve health is a difficult choice in our food oriented society, the benefits are significant. Losing 10 pounds and being free of food cravings is worth the commitment.
My mind is clearer than it has been in years and I am happier than I have been in years. I saw the difference in my eyes and sleeping when I truly stuck with the program fully and took the offending items (sugar) out of my diet. I had a lot of things wrong with me, vertigo mainly and I saw how gluten and my digestive system did not go together. I understand what I need to do now, I have the tools to make better decisions and I want to make better decisions for myself for the first time in a long time. I want better for myself, I deserve it. My mind is clearer than it has been in years and I am happier than I have been in years. I want to totally recover my health and I will continue this program working with my functional doctor because I have so many health issues. This will take time, but I am committed to this.
This program put it all together for me, and gave my body a much needed break it needed, the support to carry it out and it truly works. I have a history of addiction in my family and am beginning to believe that so many of the effects of that disease,– depression, anxiety, fatigue, brain fog, are somehow tied into a sugar metabolism dysfunction.
At one point in my life I had such a severe case of systemic yeast that my doctor told me that eating grains was like having a drink…it just put me to sleep. I have struggled over the years to combat this problems with diets, exercise, medications…this program put it all together for me, and gave my body a much needed break it needed, the support to carry it out and it truly works. I am staying on the program, debating about going to the basic from the advanced for another 6weeks to see if I can resolve the last of my issues. I plan to give this book to family members who suffer from so many of the “symptoms” of sugar metabolism malfunction. I only hope that what they see in me and my physical improvement will convince them to try this for themselves.
I think as a family we have just about every disease mentioned in the case studies…scary… I know so many people suffering with these symptoms that don’t know where to turn. I hope this book will give them the chance to regain their health and well-being.
The change I noticed within the first week was how a protein breakfast smoothie with fruit and almond milk and/or an egg was enough to keep me from being famished at dinner time. I don’t keep looking for more food through the night. Also my energy leveled out so I was the same level going to work as I was going to work out. Excellent! I have never had that before.
Excellent program!!! I am on the advanced program and I lost 9 pounds and 6 cm around the waist. My breathing improved, my energy level is much better. I feel lighter and more focused. I was really desperate to improve my health when I got into the program. I was so bloated and felt like drowning. Even though I was eating healthy, there were no results… but when I cut gluten and milk products I felt better in 2 weeks. I feel like I don’t have to think about food at all. I am not a diabetic, nor do I plan to become one just because a doctor said I would. I am a healthy, vibrant, energetic person who lost 17 pounds, and 13 inches from my waist, who reversed a pre-diabetic condition, insulin resistance, and severe muscular and joint pain. My arms and legs no longer have little bumps on them, I don’t have patches of dry skin, my digestion is improved and I no longer need to take naps because my energy level has increased immensely. My self esteem has improved because I was able to take charge and make decisions for myself that worked and have improved the quality of my life.
The proof is in the results. My mind is clearer, I feel more energetic, and I am almost always in a good mood. My weight and other health measurements have all improved. The diet is one I can follow for a lifetime.
It was much easier than I thought to let go of the fast carbohydrates. Before, I thought I could not live without bread or pasta, but now, if bread is on the table, I don’t even look at it, in fact I forget about it. It is nice to see my slender self in the mirror.

This is a wonderful program to improve your overall health. I have lost 8 pounds in the 6 weeks that I was on the program and went down a dress size. My blood pressure went from the 140’s over the high 80’s to the high 120’s over the low 80’s, without medication. I have more energy and I am more productive. I feel great!
Over the years I’ve become insulin resistant which made it difficult to lose weight. Something I’ve never had problems with in the past. The Blood Sugar Solution allowed me to start losing weight that’s been haunting me for years. It makes sense now… gluten is like glue in our systems. I believe that for me, eliminating it from my diet allowed my body to shed those extra pounds. I’ve lost 8-9 pounds over the past 8 weeks and have another 20 to go. Dr. Hyman has shown me how to get this weight off and keep it off forever.
Before the diet, I was constantly dealing with bloating and swelling-my hands, stomach, ankles. More and more frequently I was taking antacids all day long. I couldn’t lose weight no matter what I did and believe me I was doing weight training and running. No budging. My doctor has had the talk with me where she tells me that I am well on my way to diabetes and my arthritis and psoriasis were getting worse too. I felt very helpless. Six weeks can’t cure all that, but it certainly has seen me make great strides in the right direction.
I’ve lost 10 pounds, the swelling is staying away, I’m becoming active again and I only had two headaches in 6 weeks (usually weekly). I will continue with this and will continue with the supplements until I feel I don’t need them anymore, but this is great and more painless than I ever thought it could be.
On this program I lost 14 pounds and over 13 inches. I have gone down 2 or more clothing sizes, and I have somewhat more energy than I had before. I participated in this program at a time in my life which was fraught with too many other things to complete. Nonetheless, I signed up to just get that encouragement I needed to address some health issues. Even with my following some, although not to the completeness of the program I would have liked, I experienced a steady improvement. I had never been able to get my weight under 140, and suddenly noticed that my bloated belly was slimmer, and my weight had made it below that mark. Even though only by a few pounds, it was the right direction. I had not been able to sleep well, waking up at night and not returning to sleep. I can sleep through the night, am less anxious, and best of all, I no longer have the cravings that resulted in overeating and feeling fatigue after.
I had been gradually gaining wait for several years, but after cancer surgery and radiation treatment, I suddenly put on another 10 pounds. I tried for a year to lose the weight, but couldn’t. In January, 2011, I made changes to improve my diet, increasing my consumption of vegetables and decreasing red meat and dairy products. I lost about one pound per month this way. When the opportunity to join this beta test came along, I decided to join it, to see if it would help me lose weight faster. I thought the program was excellent. Very well organized and very well written. Easy to follow instructions and tons of useful information. It is a very enjoyable program to follow despite the fact that one needs to make a real effort to get results. It was effortless losing weight on the program as I was never hungry and never felt deprived. The Blood Sugar Solution is a great program for showing how tasty healthy eating can be. I now have the knowledge and tools to help ensure I maintain my weight going forward.
Not only did this program help me lose my first 25 lbs, an average of 3 pounds a week, it helped cure my chronic periodontal disease, got me back on my bicycle which I love riding, and helped my knees to stop aching so much from the weight.
Seeing my scale climb back up to nearly 220 lbs. was worrisome. I had seen that number come and go before, but I had promised myself that I wouldn’t let it happen again. Finally a program that you don’t have to count anything except how much extra weight that comes off while you’re on the road to health. Eat anything you want except sugar, caffeine, wheat, dairy, and alcohol. When you complete this 8 week program, you can add these back into your life. I feel more energetic, less fatigued, less ‘foggy’, lost 17 lbs and 4 inches off my waist (went from a 34 pant to a 32.)
I reached a plateau at 200 pounds for 8 weeks while working out regularly. I started the program and lost 20 more pounds in the next 8 weeks and that includes a minor 4 pound gain over Thanksgiving that I promptly lost the next week. I have hit a low of 179.6 pounds late last week, down from 200 at the start. I will admit I went cold turkey, so I have been on the program 2 weeks longer than the rest.
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2004. About a year later, after going through a standard ADA-approved “education,” I felt there had to be a way to do more to feel better. I started reading and following some advice from non-traditional doctors. It helped, but not enough. In 2007 I started seeing a “holistic” doctor, who helped me deal with some yeast overgrowth issues and started rebalancing some systems. Unfortunately, in early 2008 my job melted away, and with it my ability to pay the doctor. I was on my own again.
I continued reading and doing what I could on my own. I joined Dr. Hyman’s UltraSimple Diet Challenge in 2010, and that helped. Over a period of about 8 months I lost a few pounds and dropped my fasting glucose from around 130 to around 120. So I started this beta program with a strong touch of cynicism. I hoped it would work for me, but I didn’t really expect it to. Imagine my surprise when, just a few days into the program, I started bouncing out of bed in the morning instead of falling out. My fasting glucose dropped into the low 90s. I had plenty of energy to get through my busy days. I was more productive in my work as a freelance writer. I felt calmer, more centered, less anxious.
So far I’ve lost 11 pounds and over 2 inches around my waist. My BMI is still higher than it should be at 31, but that’s a lot better than 35. My blood pressure is back where it was in my 20s. I can’t tell you about other markers like A1C, cholesterol, and such, because I’m still without medical insurance and can’t get the tests done, but I haven’t felt this well in over 20 years. I can’t tell you if this is the right program for you, but it certainly has been the right program for me. I was on the Advanced plan for 6 weeks, and I plan to continue for at least another 6. I know I’ll never go back to eating the way I used to.
Losing 13 pounds during the program I am now only half way away from my goal. I plan to continue with the program as a lifestyle. On days that I veered off track there was a noticeable change in the way I felt. I Realized I needed to get back on track and stick with it since I felt so much better.
The Internet is full of those who make outlandish claims for the improvement of personal health. Dr. Hyman is different. Dr. Hyman believes in attacking causes, not treating symptoms. I have only implemented some of the book, yet have already shown remarkable improvements in personal health metrics, in just six weeks. My confident prediction is that within another six weeks even more dramatic changes will occur, thanks to the roadmap in the BSS.

I was so happy to take part in this program. From the first day, I could see and feel changes on a daily basis. I went from someone who had limited mobility because of knee pain to someone who is able to walk a 5 mile mountain path on a daily basis.
The program was easy to incorporate and as the pounds dropped and the belly fat left and the fatigue faded and the pain disappeared, I gathered more motivation. The results were markedly lowered A1C and other improved medical markers such as decreased triglycerides and cholesterol. The bonus…24 pounds gone and 4.5 inches off my waist and new clothes too. I am currently at a weight of 193.5 after 8 weeks on the program. My total weight loss is 20 pounds. I am going to continue on the program for the rest of my life, and hope to lose another 20 pounds. I find that eating according to plan makes me feel much better. After having weight loss surgery, my stomach was frequently upset and I felt nauseous and that food was just not digesting correctly. This problem has now been resolved and for the most part my meals do not bother me. I have much more energy and feel generally in a better mood.
I still need to work on exercising more, but that is a time constraint. I do try to walk as much as possible. I love yoga and want to get back to it for both exercise and relaxation. My family has loved the increase in the home cooked meals and the additional vegetables. My work colleagues have all decided to order a weekly organic vegetable delivery. The program fulfilled all of my expectations and more. I am very grateful to Dr. Hyman for choosing me as part of the beta test.
This program did meet my expectations. I found it easier than I thought to follow the diet. I had already lost 45 pounds this year, but was at a frustrating plateau. I finally broke that plateau and lost 13 pounds in 8 weeks.
I have spent the last 10+ years in the 290-300 pound weight range. I have tried several diets and have lost some weight but always gained it back. After 8 weeks on the program, I weigh 262. Besides the fact that I have lost more weight than I did on past diets, I feel much better. I have more energy and I sleep better.

This program helped me realize that there are certain foods that I just cannot or should not eat. Maybe not forever, but most likely very infrequently. I needed to train my body and my mouth to enjoy whole, real food. Nothing processed and artificial. It takes planning ahead and preparation. But it is worth it to feel better.
The program met my expectations. I definitely feel more disciplined with better eating and exercise. I lost nearly 20 pounds, and plan to continue for a few more weeks to achieve my targeted weight loss of 25-30 pounds. I feel great actually, probably the best I’ve felt in over a decade. I no longer have my cravings for carbs (it was extremely tough at first,) and I got rid of my worst fault: serial snacking after dinner until bedtime.
I easily lost 17 lbs on The Blood Sugar Solution. I also dropped my blood glucose levels. I am out in public more, enjoying healthier food choices and exercising more. I have more self-control with food, no crazy cravings and I feel full and satisfied. This program got me back on track. It gave me the guidance, encouragement, and knowledge I needed. My son had me get a blood test in June because of some of the symptoms he noticed I was having – inflammation, sores that wouldn’t heal, overweight, and high blood pressure.
When we found out I was diabetic he had me cut out all ‘white’ stuff (sugar, flour, potatoes, bread, rice, noodles, etc.), and fruit. I did that for 2 months and then tested again. I was no longer in the diabetic range. He later heard about your program and suggested that I try it.
You then let me have a little fruit (thank you) and maybe a little brown rice. But you made me give up coffee, and cheese! It was an OK trade off. In total I’ve lost 40 lbs – 16-18 of that since on your program. The Facebook community was a really wonderful part of the program. Hearing their encouragements, recipes, failings, successes, etc. let me know I wasn’t alone and that there was somewhere to go for help and advice.
Eating healthy can be a very enjoyable experience. I learned this by eating what I initially thought would be a very restrictive diet. Learning to eat without added sugar, grains and dairy can be wonderful once you learn how!
I lost 9 inches overall and my BMI decreased 5 points. My weight did not change. However, my attitude and outlook changed. I am more willing to eat vegetables more often. I am more aware of how food affects me. I also found some habits that I did not know I had. I am still trying to bring it all into my life to make changes that will last a lifetime.
I’m happy to have lost 5.5 pounds, but the going was slow. I started to exercise and then quit. I really need an exercise partner or some way to keep me motivated to work out. My only support system was a friend that I corresponded with via e-mail. She became discouraged as time went on also. I learned a few new tips (sesame oil for cooking instead of olive oil, and the benefits of almond milk unsweetened over cow’s milk).
Perhaps people who did Facebook felt better supported. I resisted Facebook, feeling like I spend enough time on the computer already. I would recommend devising holiday eating strategies. Dieters need the most support during the holidays when all those temptations are placed in their path.
I lost 7 lbs., feel younger and have energy to spare at the end of the day. The brain fog that was destroying my life has lifted and I’m on top of my game at work. This program is life altering on so many levels. This may sound dramatic, but it ‘feels’ dramatic. I have my life back!
During this program I was never hungry, never felt deprived and I lost 12.4 lbs! I had lost 45 lb about 5 years ago. The weight was creeping back up, but what truly alarmed me was how my belly was getting larger and larger. This program works because it takes away all of the cravings. If you are not eating sugar or gluten then you don’t even want any. Before whenever I would eat, say pizza and ice cream, I would be so tired; without refined carbs I have plenty of energy and never get tired. At times my husband threatens to take my batteries out.
I lost approximately a pound a week, slow but steady. Once you get past the first few days, you really don’t crave sugar and grains. I found plenty of food to eat, especially with the beans and nuts to fill me. I wasn’t really very hungry between meals either. Too many nuts probably slowed my weight loss down.
It is possible to control sugar cravings and still live a “normal” life. I really had no idea how much of what I was eating was affecting not only my weight but my entire life. I feel empowered to make healthy choices for my body because I’m worth it! THANK YOU!!!

When I started the program I weighed 165 lbs. and had a BMI of 29 and a middle that was growing. I chose to go on the Advanced Plan to prove to myself that if I went back to eating “good food” and ditched the daily 2 or 3 glass “wine break” that I would feel better. I think the thing that bothered me most was that my eyesight was becoming horrible. I could no longer see even with reading glasses on. I felt like a film was growing over my eyes. After 1 week on this plan and taking the requested supplements it was unbelievable, I feel like my eyes are working as well as when I was 20! I feel AWESOME!!!

I have never been truly overweight but I couldn’t lose no matter what I did. I watched the scale go up and up while I sat scratching my head wondering why. I had resisted giving up wheat because it has always been presented as “healthy” and likened to Jesus as the “bread of life”. Jesus is from Bethlehem which means house of bread! How could wheat be bad? How could dairy and honey be bad? In the Bible the promised land is likened to the land flowing with milk and honey!
I had some mind sets that needed to change. My weight kept going up and my lab values keep getting worse. When Dr. Hyman sent the email asking for participants in the beta study I jumped at the opportunity. Of course you commit before you get the book! Thank you for doing that!!! I probably would have passed on it if I knew I had to give up both grains and dairy. Now I am so thankful.
I am going to continue this program for a life time if I can eliminate all the health risks that I was accumulating. I expect my labs values to continue to improve. Once I made up my mind to follow this program and found a process that worked for me this was not so hard. I appreciate not having to count calories. I appreciated the recipes and using trials of new foods. I have become more aware of foods I am considering eating when out.
Brain fog is a disability. It inhibited me from keeping jobs and overall enjoying life. It hurts the self esteem and makes you question yourself. To be able to think clearly is a wonderful gift this program has given me. I now hold 2 jobs. Both employers value me and I have pride in doing a great job. This is something I haven’t had in 15 years. I have lost 17 pounds and friends have been noticing the difference. I lost 5 lbs, and I wrote that I plan to stay on 6 more weeks so I can lose 5 more, but it is my intention to follow this program indefinitely. I feel so good… clear, calm, present, with all of my energetic resources available to me. I am sleeping well, and more. I have increased my workouts (Pilates, yoga, walking) to 4-5 a week, and feel that I have made great progress in terms of muscle strength and flexibility during this 8 week interval. I’m sure my blood work will reflect this when I have a chance to recheck it.
Thanks Dr. Hyman for choosing me for the Beta because it made me get a blood test to find out that there was something wrong. At first I thought that this was about participation in a more formal study, and that I might be part of some group that was being studied to find out something. Boy, am I glad that I did not drop out though! I learned SO much from the program and the people who were living with diabetes every day. I was also able to help my dad, keeping in mind an uncle of his who died of diabetes-related illness (Alzheimer’s) only a few months ago.
I listened to the Beta Facebook pals as they supported each other through cravings and other challenges. At first I felt shy but then I was jumping right in there. My current health status is terrific! I eat well, sleep well and work fairly long days, when I should have been exhausted. My weight remained exactly the same (good because my goal was not to lose weight), but my whole body feels ‘cleaner’ and more toned now. I think that there is something else that you can’t measure as easily as the weight – the psychological lift that you get from your Facebook buddies.
As a health professional myself (yes, we get sick), I will with all my heart recommend this program to my family and nutrition clients. The diet and lifestyle suggestions themselves, I feel, can also be used by those who DON’T have blood sugar issues, quite easily.
I was one of those people who were right on the borderline – blood work looked fine, normal weight, blood pressure and blood sugar – and felt ‘okay’, but vague symptoms were surfacing that any conventional doctor would attribute to age.
No one would have said I needed a program like this, including myself. Before the program I dreaded getting out of bed in the morning, I was just waiting to see what body part would give me trouble that day, I didn’t feel rested, I was extremely irritable and in constant pain and I am only 33 years old. I will find it easy to continue on the advanced plan until I reach my goal weight. After that time, I will slowly reintroduce some healthy foods into my daily diet, as per Dr. Hyman’s recommendation.
