I found green tea rather blah and I never liked the taste much. I do like chai tea though and found this wonderful recipe to add to green tea to spice it up! I am also enjoying it more with warm coconut milk. I may improvise and add vanilla bean eventually. Its very forgiving. I am sure it would be great with a small touch of honey as well @ http://www.vegrecipesofindia.com/masala-tea-powder-dry-masala-chai-powder/

chai masala mix

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Yield: 1 medium size bottle (should last months)

ingredients (listed as both powered and whole herbs)

 * 1/2 cup dry ginger powder or (4-5 pieces of dry ginger)
* 5 teaspoons nutmeg powder or (1 and half nutmeg)
* 2 teaspoons cardamom powder or (10 gms small cardamom)
* 4 teaspoons cinnamon powder or (7-8 long cinnamon pieces)
* 1 teaspoon cloves powder or (5 gms cloves)
* (3 tablespoons fennel seeds)
* ------------
* 1 teaspoon black peppercorns (optional)
* 3/4 cup chopped lemon grass (optional)
* 1/2 cup dry rose petals (optional)
* 1/2 cup dry holy basil/tulsi leaves (optional)

process with a coffee grinder:

 1. grind the dry ginger.
2. grind the nutmeg.
3. grind all the rest of the herbs and spices with the ground ginger and nutmeg.
4. store in an air-tight container
5. use the chai masala whenever you make an indian chai.
6. around 1/4 tsp of chai masala is perfect for 2 cups of tea, but you can make it to 1/2 tsp for a more spicy indian chai.

I am finding more questions as I read through the recipe book. Almost every recipe includes olive (or other) oil. Do all of you use that much oil in your diets? The calories seem rather high to me. I have to admit that my 'norm' has been use of deprivation diets so I may not be thinking clearly about this. I would like to hear from you experienced BSS veterans to quiet my fears. Thank you, Shelley

Happy weekend all,
I received my BSS Cookbook and am deep into preparing my grocery list. I start the eating plan on Monday with Week 2 of Prep. (I'm not sure why it isn't called Week 1 of the Basic Plan! LOL) I have a couple of questions:
The book and the Nutrition Basics download list carbs per meal as 15 grams. It further states, " As insulin sensitivity improves, you can increase your consumption of natural carbohydrates to 30-50 grams per meal." The Ultra Shake in the recipe book is 47 grams carbs. What's the deal? I would like to create and modify recipes soon, but I'm confused. What are the guidelines?

The shake calls for 2 scoops of protein powder; how much it that? My powder calls for 1 heaping Tbls per serving. Nicole, how much do you add to your shake recipe (I planned to use it). Would anyone else care t share their breakfast shake recipe?
Thank you all in advance for your guidance, Shelley

Tabbouleh with Quinoa

The more herbs you add the better. They are very healthy for you. Quinoa is a complete protein and fantastic for your health, especially if you are a vegetarian.

To make quinoa tabbouleh 6-8 servings:
Combine 2 cups cooked, cooled quinoa with
1 cup cherry tomatoes, quartered;
4-inch piece cucumber peeled, seeded, diced small
1 cup or more minced flat-leaf parsley; (can use some cilantro)
½ cup minced fresh mint;
1/4 cup olive oil;
2 Tbsp lemon juice, or more to taste;
1/2 tsp (or to taste) sea salt; freshly ground black pepper and toss well.

optional, onion, minced garlic, celery, scallions

Tis the season for grilling! I will be attending a couple of cookouts later this month. I would love to hear of any ideas you may have for desserts or side dishes (other than greens/veg salad) to go with burgers and brats. I need a dessert or side dish to feed a group of 20, one that won't spoil sitting out in the open for several hours. Thanks!
