Diabesity / Diabetes 1 year ago I’ve only recently found this site and heard of Dr Hyman’s book The Blood Sugar Solution. It looks really effective – but can anyone advise me on the cost of implementing the recommended advanced diet? Is it possible on a low budget?

Hi, Yes it can be accomplished on a low budget. Concentrate on the proper foods and introduce supplements as you can. You will save some money not buying the foods you eat. Buy your vegetables at a farmers market if possible. Stay with protein that you can afford. If you cannot afford organic chicken go with Foster Farms (no relation) a brand that lets the chickens walk around and makes every effort to avoid antibiotics. Or do your research on local suppliers in your area. You can make your own coconut milk and buy food at Trader Joe’s or Costco. Most major grocers provide some organic options.
Do what you can do and you will find it makes a difference. Please do not use money as an axcuse to avoid starting this plan.
Good Luck, Margaret
Margaret has a very good response for you and I agree completely. I might add that in my case I believe that I am not as likely now to waste foods to spoilage or expiring dates. I would buy lots of healthy produce and then eat the junk instead. Couldn’t seem to help myself. I really think I’ll spend less or maybe just a wash on the grocery needs. Not eating out every other day will also be a factor in expense savings for me. It’s well worth the effort to try and fit it to your budget. Hope you’ll join in.
I found that the 99cent store has organic lettuces for sale on Wednesdays. Sometimes they have spinach and kale too. Big boxes of the stuff.
Thanks for your replies – I’m sorry, I should have said that I live in the UK – so I won’t be able to access the same shops(!) However, I am encouraged by your posts – and will carry on researching what’s needed to join in.
Heavens, the grocery costs in England are high!!! Here in Texas, I try to buy items offered in the weekly sales, buy frozen chicken tenders and fish fillets and ez-peel shrimp. I just made a huge pot of vegetable/cabbage ”chili” ( I call it chili because of the spices I used), and for a modest investment, I have enough soup servings for 8 days. I can’t afford organic or high-priced supplements, so I buy what I can. Don’t fret over those things. I don’t know what foods are most economical in the UK, but shop where you can find the best deals. If you have to buy at Testco instead of a smaller grocer, don’t feel badly. Your health is worth the effort and you will find that your food bill can actually go down. For me, the biggest savings has been from the coffee beans I used to buy and grind myself. Not having coffee gives me a bit more goings towards the produce department. Best of luck. You will soon be feeling so great that all of this will be so worthwhile!
Yes, food prices are very high now here – and its a worry because it seems to just be getting worse over time. Unfortunately, I don’t live near a discount supermarket like Lidl or Aldi which offer much cheaper goods. I can’t really afford organic either – although occasionally I’ve bought organic green veg like broccoli – partly because I’ve wanted to avoid GM foods as well as the pesticides, but I think I’ll just have to make do because of the cost.
I’ve just ordered the book The Blood Sugar Solution so soon I hope to be set to go. Thanks for the encouragement

That’s great. It will be really good to hear your experiences from the UK. Hope you find you can join in.
I think Margaret gave great advice. I can’t afford all of the supplements but take those I can and I make eating healthy food my focus. I know you will find choices that will make a difference. I do save money by not buying bread, coffee, prepared foods, wine, and many other things I’m just not using right now–mayonnaise, butter and more. I use frozen fish fillets and frozen vegetables from Aldi’s on occasion to save some money. Beans, which are on the program, are low cost. And now that I’m taking no insulin at all, I save money there too which can go towards food.
I have Dr. Hymans The Ultrasimple Diet book. Can anyone tell me if the Sugar Solution is the same info? If so I don’t want to purchase the book
You will find Sugar Solution (BSS) different in many ways. More information regarding glycemic index, supplements, health quizzes, etc. have all been updated. A few of the foods found in the older books are not used in BSS. Some of the information repeats, some has changed. If you want something specific for blood sugar management, then you will want this new book.
