I got my 5 workouts in this week – yay!
It wasn’t easy, I’ve been sick since Wednesday. I don’t think I would have pushed through if it hadn’t been for my commitment to this post.
    Thanks, Nicole!

    • Congratulations Barbara. I got out the door 13 times to do my two daily walks. I just missed one evening outing. was just too hot and I slept instead. Sorry to hear you’ve been sick. What did that do to your sugar levels. Mine go up when I’m fighting something off . my fasting sugar levels have been doing great but haven’t come down enough to reduce my insulin any lower. Still at 5 units of Novolin 2x a day. take care of yourself!

      • Hi Nicole,
Sorry it took me so long to reply to your question. It’s been over a week and I’m finally feeling well enough to sit and type.
When I read your questions, it got me wondering what my stats are these days. Truth is, I don’t even check them anymore. I run an occasional A1C and that’s it.
I look forward to hearing that you don’t have to stick yourself anymore. However long it takes, it’ll be so worth it.
My A1C was 6.5 at 237 pounds (where I started). It is now 5.5 at 158 pounds. I’d like it to be in the 4% range someday.
Just for grins, I checked my sugar levels and you were right, my BS was up to 128. Before I lost weight it would get into the 200s.
I also ran my other stats. According to Dr. H’s calc for BMI, I am finally not obese anymore, just overweight (yay), but my waist-to-height ratio is 59% – and 58 and over is highly obese, the top of the range. I’m not out of the woods yet.
I’ve been stuck around 160, give or take a few pounds depending on the day, for too long now. In previous dieting attempts I seem to get stuck at this weight also. I think the danger is that I feel more ”normal” now, it’s no longer traumatic to try to figure out what to wear and that sort of thing, so I’ve lost some motivation. I need to focus on what I really want, that flat tummy. It’s been so long since I’ve been comfortable wearing a belt (I preferred wearing tents to ”hide” my belly), it kind of seems impossible.
        But anything is possible, right?
So I’m starting over from now. I remember 35 years ago when my weight was a whopping 142 and I locked myself in my apartment for 21 days and fasted my way down to 116. Yes, incredibly stupid. I wanted to prove I had enough willpower to be a size 7 (I think that would be a 5 now, sizes have changed over the years). Who knows what that did to my metabolism?! Little did I know back then that it’s not about willpower!
My point is that 142 felt horribly overweight to me then, so I need to start thinking of my current weight as too heavy instead of doing a little happy dance when I see a size 10 in the mirror instead of 3X.
A year ago size 10 sounded like a miracle (it is!). Now I need to set my sights on the next miracle. My long range weight goal has been 140 for years, but since I’ll have a 100 pound weight loss if I get to 137, that seems fitting.
So, I’m starting over with 21 pounds to go!

        • Do you have a picture of yourself at 21 pounds lighter that you can put on your refrigerator. My husband thought that I needed something to post on my refrigerator. My husband rummaged through a box of pictures and found a wedding picture of me ( from my first marraige in 1971 ) and posted that picture of me in my wedding gown on the refrigerator. He said it is one of his favortie pictures of me. A ”skinny” picture to help you visualize where you want to get to really helps you remember and focus. I hope the walking is going well this week for you! I’m loving that it is a little cooler in the evening.

          • Oooh! That’s a great idea, thanks!
Visuals are so powerful, I’m going to do that. The pics in our brain create our world, don’t they?
Thanks also for being a friend! : )

          • Oops – forgot to answer your question about the exercise. I’ve been doing gentler, less aerobic workouts since I’ve been sick, but getting out there and doing it – 3x so far this week and I’m about to go out for #4.
I swim but it’s an outdoor pool so the water temp isn’t going to hold up much longer. I just read in Prevention magazine about how to maximize walking with walking poles. Walking is difficult for me because of my back, but maybe with poles I can do it.
When you walk, it doesn’t matter how cold it gets, you can just bundle up! (or walk faster)
            Have a great day!

            • My walking fullfills my neds on multilevels. It gets me my exercise I need but it also gets me out in the sun light…vitamin D. It is something that I do without my husband. I get to meet all sorts of babies in strollers, dogs and kitty cats and I get to interact a little with the dogs owners at times. A little interaction talking about dogs and the weather rather than real estate is a welcome change to my day. And because it is early in the day and late in the day …no time frame, no deadlines and no stress. A weclome beginning and a welcome end to look forward to for each day with 1 1/2 to 2 hours of listening to great music on pandora along the way. Life is good!
