Diet & Nutrition 1 year ago Is feta cheese (a goat cheese) okay to sprinkle on salads?

If you are following the Blood Sugar Solution diet, no. All cheeses, regardless of animal are considered dairy products.
That makes perfect sense. I guess I’m a little foggy brained and grasping at ideas for variety. Glad I didn’t buy any. Thanks Margaret. I sure have appreciated your patience and help.
Hi Barb, I have done the same grasping at straws for variety thing. It is amazing how a part of me just could not settle into the plan. I did follow it, but always trying to find something else. My big find in week 5 was kelp noodles. It was a diversion that helped me through. They are different, but entertaining!. I have 3 days left of week 6. It has been a very interesting and rewarding journey.
Margaret
Wow, you’re getting close to the end of your initial 6 wks. That’s great. I plan to look for kelp noodles next trip to the market. I was intrigued by Tony’s recipe. It sounded good but I’ve never had the noodles or tofu so it will be an adventure for me. I also made the blueberry muffin recipe you posted or re-posted back when I first started reading the community. I thought I would miss the expectation of sweetness but I don’t and they are sweeter each time I eat one. I guess the natural sweetness of the bluberries becomes very prominent without the old evil sugar added.
Hi Barb,
You are correct. Almonds and berries and jicama taste even sweeter as time goes by.
Those muffins really helped me out. When I was away from the house they worked great. I increased the cinnamon and they tasted even sweeter to me. After 7 plus weeks of no sugar, the thought of sweet deserts and pastries just seems like it would be too sweet. This is a real change for me. I loved pastries. I did not have white sugar in the house before the plan so sweets, beyond fruit, may be the easiest thing to keep out of my diet, long term.
I thought grains were the culprit for my arthritis, but I have been doing some reading, and it seems sugar can trigger arthritis pain as well. Both grains and sugar are highly inflammatory.
Have a great day, Margaret
It is so surprising to me that the foods we were eating previously, sugar and grains, caused so much arthritis pain. I hobbled out of bed before cutting out those foods. I won’t say I sprint out of bed, now, but I certainly move with greater ease and agility and don’t move as slowly. Dr. Hyman’s BSS has been a real godsend in so many ways!
And you both will find that once the six weeks are over, you look at things differently! I thought the night of my six weeks I would ”celebrate” and eat something I hadn’t been able to have. Guess what? I was looking at a table of food (I was at a party) and I went UCK. Most of it was full of dairy or sugar and didn’t even appeal to me anymore! It is the brain shift that occurs that is the most amazing miracle to me.
You are so right. During the lunch hour at work, I look at the massive quantities of unhealthy foods some coworkers eat and I can’t imagine eating that way. I am so surprised that I don’t miss sweets, but on day 17, I can honestly say that I seriously miss my coffee. I don’t think that will go away.
I’m still in the preparation phase (waiting for some friends to read the book, so we can start all at once), and Coffee is what I miss most too. I’ll find myself standing next to the coffee pot at work almost by instinct.
Hi nik… Welcome and glad you’re jumping in with both feet. Yes, the 2nd week of prep was the hardest on me with the coffee. I’m in program wk1 dy4 and I actually think I’m getting better. Someone here recommended green tea so every other day now I have a cup. I know it’s fudging but it has half the caffeine and helped me scale back more gradually. I may always miss my coffee, I hope not but odds are that’s just one of those things that seems like it was harmless to me. I could drink a cup before bed if I wanted and it didn’t disturb my sleep at all. Everybody is different, for sure. Good Luck, Barb
LOL! I have to tell you that I learned a good lesson this morning. I used to have my coffee maker ready to turn on the moment I woke (I didn’t want to set a timer on it), and it was so easy to pour a hot cup of coffee almost immediately. Last night, I forgot to have my pan ready to boil water and my french press cleaned and ready for tea leaves. When it was all over, I had tea grounds on the floor and I was bending down (with my morning-stiff back) to get a pan to boil water (an electric kettle is on my must-have list-they are FAST FAST FAST!). Tonight, I will make certain I have all the equipment ready to go!
Awww! I woke up with a stiff back for the first time in a very long time. I baby my back but yesterday I pulled weeds. It rained the night before and it was a perfect time. It was shocking that I even had the energy to do it. Now I wish I had been a bit less energetic! Yes, you need a quick source of hot water. I have a keurig single cup coffee brewer and have started using it for hot water only. Throwing in a tea bag, pusing the button and getting instant hot water. It’s my favorite appliance … or was, bcb – (before coffee ban) Off topic here but I was wondering what the ”friends” thing is on this board. I don’t know much about social networking, I’ve avoided it on purpose but now I’m wondering what declaring frindships here entails and how it works. I don’t have any friends, so sad
Maybe I could add you as a friend? although I saw somewhere that you were in Texas …. sorry to say, I’m in Oklahoma and live in the hometown of the Sooners. Yeah!
No problem about the Okkie thing, as I am not a football fan. I am a huge soccer fan! World Cup 2014-only two years away!!! I had a request from someone to be friends, but I am not sure myself how this works. I would love to do that. There must be a button somewhere that we have to push. My daughter, or rather, my ”technical advisor”, moved too far away to help with stupid things like tech questions. We just have to figure it out. Yes, let’s be friends!
BCB – I love it. That should be an official ”term” on this blog!
How great that a bunch of you are doing this together. What a great way to have success with that kind of support network. Best of luck.
Oops – came to me instead of nic…..
And one of the best things is that foods taste so much better, now. It is kind of cool to be in on the ground floor, so to speak, with this dietary plan. Hopefully, our success will help others come around to this way of eating. So much better than spending thousands of dollars every year on medications!
Good morning – I’m hoping to cook some things that will be on stand-by so I can get better organized. I saw where you mentioned a Vegetable Chili somewhre and I can’t find it. If you have a recipe I would love it and if you don’t, maybe just some suggestions on what you used. Thanks, Barb Wk1 Dy6
Morning, Barb,
BTW, how did you do the friend’s request thing? I still haven’t figures it out. For the vegetagble ”chili” recipe, I will try to recall the recipe from memory:
1/2 head small cabbage, chopped
8 oz onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 cup zuchinni, chopped
1 cup yellow squash, chopped
1/2 cup celery, chopped
2 14oz cans salt-freed diced tomatoes, with juice
6 cups broth ( I used veggie, but will use chicken or beef, next time. Just get low-sodium)
1 14 oz can garbanzo beans (for 8 servings, the fiber additon is good, but the glycemic impact is small)
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 tsp pureed chipotle pepper in abobe sauce (I buy those small cans, puree the contents, and keep it
sealed tight in my fridge for whenever I need it. It adds a smoky , spicy flavor)
1 tbl cumin
1 tbl chili powder
2 tsp cracked black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
salt to taste
I bunch cilantro, chopped, 1/2 added to cooking pot, 1/2 added afterwards for flavor and color
Saute the onions, red pepper, and celery until translucent. Add garlic and saute for a minute or so. Then, add everything. Adjust seasonings to taste and simmer, adding more broth/water, if needed, until veggies are tender. I think this took about 30-40 minutes, maybe a bit more. I have a 1/3 cup ladle that I use to dish out my soups. I seperate the entire pot into several containers and usually put 5/3 cups into each serving. I tallied the calories by weighing all the ingredients, and I came up with about 100 calories per 5/3 cup serving. Now, I tried to make this low-sodium, and I confess that it tasted terrible. Once I added the necessary salt to make it palitable, it was actually rather good. As you can tell, I like spicy food. Feel free to add cumin and chili powder in smaller increments to get the taste you want. The soup flavors get better after a day in the fridge. It freezes well. I cooked a chicken tender one evening and added chopped chicken to my big bowl of ”chili” and it was delicious. I am sure you can add other things to make it your own.
Thanks, I was hoping for something I could freeze in separate portions. This will be great. I’m probably not as spicy with my food but it does really sound good.
On the friends thing, I haven’t learned much but on the right side of the screen if you scroll down you’ll see ”UltraWellness Community Activities” I think that’s what it says. But the last of 4 or 5 things is ”members”. When you click on that it takes you to a list of all members. You can sort in various ways or do an individual search. Each member has a ”friend” button. When you click that I guess it sends a request for friendship out. After the request is accepted by that member then when you go to their public profile you have the option of sending a public or private message to them as your friend. I’ve slowly discovered these few things. I’m sure there is more. But I’m sure there are times when an off-board discussion is needed and it’s nice to know how to accomplish that. Hope this is close to being right.
Technology is passing me by!
How right you are! Thanks.
I forgot the can of cut green beans, low sodium, rinsed and drained.
got it added to the list of ingredients.
