Depression 1 day, 23 hours agoI hurt my back on Saturday morning and it left me flat. I even fainted on Sunday from the pain! I saw the orthopedist yesterday and had X-Rays, which turned up nothing remarkable. I am on muscle relaxers for 2 weeks and anti-inflammatories for a month and start physical therapy tomorrow. The bad thing is that I cannot do my exercise classes…[Read more]

Depression 1 month, 1 week agoWe all know that exercise is good for the body. I have heard over and over how exercise is good for your brain as well. My response has always been a skeptical “Sure it is”. I’ve felt a skip in my step for a while after working out, but that was the extent of it.
Well, now I am a believer! I’m reading an awesome book called Spark: The…[Read more]-

No question I’m more alert, focused, calm when I’m working out regularly. Over the years I’ve known I could effectivley “self-medicate” my depression with exercise. Sometimes when a run, or just getting off the couch, seemed utterly impossible to contemplate, I forced myself to go anyway and came home feeling fine, at least for a while . …[Read more]

Hi Vimala, I also feel more clear headed when getting more exercise or movement in. I also need much less sleep when getting a healthy level of exercise.

Wow! Some better then others. Currently off all, some days better then others. Some background: Thyroid Cancer…[Read more]-

Margaret,
Happy on your improved health! I’m getting started on the BSS plan. I’ve got my fingers crossed!

You will do well. If you have anything to do with the military, you understand the value of preparation and perseverance : ) Those two things really pay of with the BSS plan!

Depression 1 month, 3 weeks agoI am working my way through the book slowly, so I have not started the program yet. I am wondering if this program may actually help my bipolar as well as the depression component. Anyone one have any experience with bipolar symptoms? I have Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, you name it. And I am only 39. I am…[Read more]

Welcome Amy – I can not speak to your question about bipolar but this lifestyle will help with all your other issues , high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and you will lose weight too. Just make the commitment and follow the instructions in the book. Nicole

Depression 1 month, 4 weeks agoJust joining….sick and tired of being sick and tired. I’m wondering how soon that will change, the utter exhaustion, since I started eating as the book says. It’s only been one week…but I’ve followed everything to a ”t”!!!

Susie replied 1 month, 4 weeks ago
Hi Mary! First of all, welcome. Are you following the Basic or Advanced Plan? Were you exhausted before your first week of the program or just since doing it for one week? What are your goals? You have posted under the Depression group so I am not sure if you are dealing with that. There are several groups to join and post under. Let us know more…[Read more]

Welcome Mary…depending on what you were eating before many people experience withdrawal the first week or so as their blood sugars stabilize…especially if their diet was full of processed foods, sugar, caffeine and gluten. Make sure you stay hydrated..drink plenty of water and I like herbal teas . Eat enough of the right foods to not be…[Read more]

Hi Mary, once you get the “bad stuff” out of your body (sugar, flour, HFCS etc.) the cravings will go away and you will feel so much more energized. How soon that happens is different for each of us. Stick with it, I know you will feel better. I’m in my 10th month on the program, and still going strong! I don’t think of the BSS program as…[Read more]

I need to lose weight, but I started this to have more energy and better health. I knew if I didn’t, many of the health problems were not so far away! I don’t have high blood pressure, diabetes,etc.-as done with normal doctors’ tests, but this book fit me like a glove! I am 100lbs overweight….so it is/was a matter of time. Thanks for your…[Read more]

Hi Lisa…so sorry to hear about your pain.. my husband Phill has regular problems with back issues and goes to a chiropractor regularly. He has even found help with the issue with acupuncture but that gets expensive . Hope you find comfort soon. You might want to think about reducing your carb intake until you are back to exercising. ( ie go back…[Read more]
Good idea, Nicole. I will be extra careful about what I eat while not exercising. Thank you for your words. Lisa
I’m so sorry to hear about your back pain, Lisa. I too suffer from intermittent bouts of back pain. I don’t think it is necessarily due to excess weight. My PT says that strengthening your core/abs is one of the best ways to reduce/eliminate back pain. If your core is weak, it isn’t able to support the spine like it should, resulting in…[Read more]
I thought my core was strong because of all the Pilates and other exercise classes I do plus the walking! I guess I was wrong about that. Thank you for writing. You guys have made me feel a lot better. I will come back stronger than ever!
I’m sorry, I wasn’t implying that your core is weak, Lisa! You mentioned that the weight loss would have taken care of those problems. I was offering another reason for back pain to rear its ugly head even after the excess weight is gone. For all we know, there could be a third reason — it could be totally unrelated to weight and core strength.
Oh Vimala, no need to apologize. I was serious. I guess my core was not as strong as I thought but it is definitely stronger than it used to be and getting stronger (well, at least until this episode with my back LOL). Thank you for your support. This too shall pass and I will be stronger than ever! All the best, Lisa
I forgot to mention that taking anti inflammatories for an extended period have caused weight gain for me. But I lose the extra weight about a week or so after I’m done taking them. So, don’t be too worried if you gain a little weight while on these meds.
Sorry to hear of this turn! It would drive me nuts not to be able to exercise.
It is driving me nuts because today was my day to do aerobic dance and Pilates. I will just have to do some light walking until I can get back into my classes, and as Nicole advised, eat fewer carbs since I won’t be working them off. Thanks! Lisa
Thank you for your wise words. I will take your advice and try out that Peggy Capp yoga position on the wall. All the best, Lisa
Hi Lisa, You do have my sympathy. i have been struggling with knee pain, i finally had a cranial-sacral treatment and that helped. He suggested I go to a chirpractor. Well i went today (I used to go regularly, but stopped a couple years ago) and it really helped! I will be going weekly for the next month.
Good luck with your treatments. Perhaps…[Read more]
Thank you, Margaret. Food for thought. I will be taking it easy and I guess that I what is needed right now. I had been going full tilt for a few months now. All the best, Lisa
Hi Janine, I have always wanted a rocking chair, your wooden one sounds dreamy.
Have you resolved your sleepless issue? I was wondering if you have ever tried melatonin or inositol? Sometimes I think i am feeling so well from BSS living that I just do not get tired. Of course, the next day I know that is not true: )
Blessings, Margaret
Hi, Margaret, I sleep like a log these days, waking only once or maybe twice in the night. I have to eat right to sleep right. ( I nod off in that comfy chair each night!)
Wonderful news Janine, a good nights sleep is such a treasure: )
