can anyone tell me about agave nectar? is it allowed? There are claims that it doesn’t raise your blood sugar levels like other sweetners, including sugar and honey.?
Hi Chyan, Agave is not allowed during the plan. Even stevia, an herb is banned. Your brain and metabolism react to ’sweet’ taste in a negative manner.
Agave is a healthier alternative to sugar if you are feeding a family or have to use a small amount of sweetener.
Good luck, Margaret
Thank you for the info, the only time I have it is in the berry, vegan shake in the mornings. It does get my metabolism really running and I get alot of energy, but it might just be from all the amino acids that are in the vegan protein powder I brought. Its strange too, that the vegan protein powder mix has the following ingredients: soy protein isolate, soy fiber, corn bran, potato starch, broccoli powder, tomato powder, carrot powder, beet power,& papain. that’s it…. it has 15 amino acids in one serving. this diet does work, i have lost 10#’s in 2 weeks and i feel great. I am emotionally high since being on this diet, I actually feel good…weird, because I am an emotionally, comfort eater with a sugar addiction. I been diabetic for 9 years my blood sugar levels are in the normal range and I haven’t taken my long acting insulin in 4 days. Woooowho!
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am celebrating your success with you. It gives me encouragement to here about your progress. One question how did you know when to stop your insulin?
Well, to be honest, I just did it, to see what my numbers where, and they have been in the normal range since. I was taking a short acting one as well, but only if my blood sugar was over 150 before a meal and then only 5 units. I haven’t needed this at all since I started the program. The long acting one I take is to keep my blood sugar level throughout the day hopefully not to spike, around 5 days ago, I didn’t take my long acting meds before bed and in the morning my blood sugar levels was 105, then the next day 115, for the last 2 days it’s been 132 in the am. I probably should start taking the long acting again, until my levels are consistantly low. I just hate giving myself injections.
It seems to me that I read on the webpage somewhere, that even xylitol is not allowed on the first 6 weeks of the diet plan. It seems that Dr Hyman has an article about diet drinks and he mentioned almost every sweetner. Maybe someone can give you the link.
Yes, any processed sweetener, natural sweetener or artificial sweetener is forbidden. On the advanced plan 1/2 cup of berries and sweet tasting things like cinnamon, leaf mint and jicama are allowed. The basic BSS plan allows a bit more fruit of a certain type.
If you are pre diabetic or diabetic or have low blood sugar issues all the forbidden sweeteners can cause problems.

I’m not pre diabetic – just have a sugar addiction. I also think I may be gluten intolerant. This and wanting to lose the middle aged spread are the reasons I’m doing this eating plan. It’s just I can’t see me being able to do without baked goods for the rest of my life!
Hi Janet, Have you tried Lorraine C’s Blueberry muffins? they are made with almond meal and eggs and fill the void if you miss baked goods. It was posted by me in the recipes group a week or so ago. They are yummy.

Hi Margaret
I’ve been away and was catching up on the site. I tried to find your posting about the blueberry muffins but could not find it. Can you post a link again? I appreciate your posts, they are so helpful!
Hi Natasha, I have been out of touch for a while myself. Here is the recipe
Blueberry Muffins (basic and advanced plan)
Makes 6 servings
preheat oven to 350
line six cupcake pan with aluminum or silicone cupcake cups for large muffins or use 12 standard cupcakes and spray with olive oil
1 cup almond meal (Trader Joe’s has this)
2 tsp baking powder 1 tbs cinnamon
4 eggs
2 tbs olive oil
1 tsp vanilla extract (no sugar/organic)
1 tbs honey (small trace in each muffin) omit if you want
1 cup frozen blueberries or any organic frozen berry (Trader Joe’s)
Mix almond meal, baking powder and cinnamon together in one bowl (mix well so no lumps in baking powder).
In another bowl scramble eggs with vanilla and honey.
Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and stir well well. Add oil and stir.
Add blueberries and then divide into the six cups.
Bake for approx 25-30 minutes for large muffins (15-20 minutes for small muffins) until toothpick comes out somewhat clean.
Let cool and store leftovers in the refrigerator after cooling. I hope you enjoy them.
i don’t think sweeteners of any kind are allowed…even honey. however, maybe somebody else can give a better answer.
My reading of the book says that all sugars and artificial sweeteners are verboten.

Does that also apply to xylitol?

I think you are right. I’ve been experimenting with gluten free low GI baking but it doesn’t feel good afterwards.

i dont’ wanna live without baked goods forever either…but ideally i’d love to keep them just to one day …something like that.
