Been on the program for two weeks and have maybe lost a pound or two. My blood sugars are better, so I’m happy. I have a quick question. Does this plan advocate for ”cheat days” to readjust your body like many other diets? I’m not looking to cheat, but that practice is so widely recommended. Wondering what Dr. Hyman thinks…

    • Hi David,
I have not read the Blood Sugar Solution book yet, but what I am gathering from reading Dr. Hyman’s articles and answers to questions,is that a cheat day is not advisable.
I was considering easing into the program by possibly using stevia as an ingredient since stevia is said to be a zero calorie plant with health benefits. But as I am learning through reading, this is not a good idea – particularly for those on the advanced plan of the blood sugar program.
If I am understanding correctly, it is best to go ’cold turkey’ and to stay away from anything that can arouse your cravings.
As I think about it, this makes good sense. I know when I have attempted to manage my eating habits at other times, it just takes one small deviation into my ’forbidden’ foods to to start me back on a craving cycle.
I’m sure some others can give you a more informed answer but at least for me, I think progress will be better if I can resist the cheat days for now.

      • Great answer Sye, I agree, a gambling addict does not get a cheat day to visit casinos. You are either in your addiction or not. More importantly, if you are cleaning up your body, the systems would not benefit from more gunk as they are cleansing and getting back into order. Good luck David.

      • Thanks! I appreciate your input. I have been on the plan for 2 weeks and have not yet been tempted to ”cheat”. I am very happy at the way my blood sugars have came down in such a short time.

The concept of a ”cheat” day is fairly prevalent among diets. Everyone of the trainers at my gym recommend cheat days. They say that without a regular cheat day you will have to eat lower and lower calories to keep loosing weight. I just wanted to know what Dr. Hyman taught regarding this practice. I did not find it mentioned in his book.

The answers that I have received here all make sense. This diet is not a normal diet, right? Thanks again!

    • David,
I’m definitely in the same school as Margaret and Sye. Addicts, no reflection on you, probably should not indulge their addiction. Every time I have tried allowing myself cheat days or break days or whatever you want to call them, it eventually gets back to an unhealthy place.

By the same token, it’s often very difficult to think about going forever without something that you crave, so don’t tell yourself that you’ll never have these again. Perhaps when you regain a good measure of health you’ll be able to enjoy an indulgence again. Also, try to remind yourself about all the important reasons not to eat the foods that make you unhealthy and it may get easier to avoid the unhealthy ones.

I don’t know what Dr. Hyman says about this, but since he sees these refined and sugary foods as addictive, he would advocate the same as I’ve said.

    • Hi David- I’m in my second week on the Advanced Plan. I cut-out everyting strictly by the book with no cheating and I am seeing amazing results – beyond belief. I have no cravings and feel better than I have in many years.

      • Thanks Cathy, I have read your story, you are Very encouraging! I look forward to hearing more of your successes and sharing mine. Blessings!
