Diabesity / Diabetes 1 year, 1 month ago I have a question which I would really appreciate some your thoughts on. I have been on the diet for 8 weeks I have lost about 30lbs which puts me under 25 for my BMI. My blood sugar is very good except for my fasting. It is still about 109-112 each morning. I spoke to one of the nurses at the insurance company that says that I need to eat something before bed time, because my body is over compensating for my low blood sugar levels. Does any one have any suggestions

This is sometimes referred to as the dawn phenomenon. I’ve had that since I was diagnosed 6 years ago. My highest bg reading of the day is always my fasting. What happens is the liver stores glycogen and during the night theres a signal that glucose levels are going down and we haven’t eaten anything in hours. So the liver thinks we are going to have a major low and it dumps the glycogen which becomes glucose when it reaches the blood. At that point blood glucose begins to rise and rise and rise! Liver dumps can also happen when we over exercise.
I’ve tried eating just a bite of something right before bed, even tried putting that little bite in a baggy and waking up around 2 a.m., eating it and going back to bed. Didn’t really help me. What does help me is to eat a little something as soon as I get up. The longer I wait the higher my numbers go. I usually have a couple of almonds or some walnuts. Use to also have a small spoon of peanut butter. We all have different flaws in our glucose/insulin system and what works for one might not work for another. This is a signaling pathway fault for insulin or glycogen release or both. Good luck and I hope this sort of makes sense.
A teaspoon of almond butter before bed helps me
Again thank you for your insights. I can’t really figure out which way to go on these things. I will try the methods you have outlined, very excited to maybe narrow this down.
Thank you again
I had dawn phenomina for 10 years and I found that not eating past 7:00 PM really helped. I no longer have it after 6 weeks on the advanced program as my BG has stabilized to normal levels.
