• Good morning. I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for about 5 years. My highest ever BG was 185; I have had two readings in the 180s in 5 years. I have never taken Insulin, only Metformin. My BGs have mainly ranged from 90 to 120. My fasting BG the morning I started the Advanced plan was 127. On day three, it was 133. I was not…[Read more]

    • Hi Shelley – so many things effect your fasting blood sugar. Stress, hydration, are you taking a fiber supplement like PGX with your meals. You are right it is a learning experience. Inflammation also not having a good nights sleep also can bring fasting blood sugars up My serving of my bean soup is 1/4 cup..If you are using a fiber supplemetn…[Read more]

      • It is a big puzzle, Nicole! I do take PGX before meals. The soup recipe, with 2 C black beans and lots of veggies, was supposed to make 4 servings but I only ate 1/5th. The BSS cookbook’s recipes are pretty much based on 1/2 C beans – I had less than that. I also had a spinach salad with lots of raw veggies and your vinegar/olive oil…[Read more]

I need some moral support please. I fell off the program two weeks ago, gained weight and I feel awful. I’m finding it so hard to get back on track. I am eating all the wrong foods–sugar and carbs galore. Please help me with words and wisdom of support. Thank you all!

    • The best thing to do is to not look back – look ahead and start again – a do over – your gonna do it better today than yesterday – baby steps – start by cutting the sugar and carbs for sure- it is never ever to late to start again!

    • Hi Rissa – A life style change is a learning experience . Two weeks lost is no big deal when you are looking at how you are gong to feel for the rest of your life. Now is a good time to re read the book and visit here often. Reach out by private emails to the friends you have made here for support if more support is needed. Look at your life and…[Read more]

    • What you ate yesterday doesn’t matter. What eat today–at your next meal, your next snack–does. Think about the best choices you could make for that next meal or snack, and make them. But let those bad meals from the last two weeks slip out of your mind like so many twinkie wrappers in the wind.

    • Hi Rissa, jump back on the BSS wagon NOW, at your next meal/snack. Don’t wait till next Monday or the first of the month. Where are these “wrong foods” you speak of? If they are in your home, you’ll need to remove them from the house like you did in prep phase. Read the BSS book to keep you motivated. Highlight/mark up the passages that…[Read more]

    • Hello, Rissa. Everyone else has already given you stellar advice, so I will thank you for asking for help. Your post plus the above responses comprise my first FAVORITE. Anytime I am feeling challenged on this new journey, I will read this thread. You didn’t slink away, avoiding reality and the community; you stepped up and asked for…[Read more]

Here is a vegetable roasting idea
To roast veggies, cut into 2-3 inch pieces. Coat with olive oil, I just pour olive oil on my hand and rub over veggies. Sprinkle spices over if you want (curry, allspice, salt and pepper, chili or your favorite)
Place in an oiled glass or ceramic pan, in a single layer.
Roast at 350-375 for 30 minutes and check.…[Read more]

    • Thanks for the tips, Margaret. I did roast some veggies. My favorites of the mix I made, all on the Advanced plan, are Asparagus, Red Onions, Zucchini, and Red Bell Peppers. I have never been a big onion eater because I do not like the after-taste/breath; but the roasting is making onions one of my favorite veggies.

  • Hi Everyone – I joined this group because my dad is a type 2 diabetic and recently his readings have been high since his new primary physician changed one of his meds . He needs help , which he turned to me for , with changing his foods . He was sent to a nutritionist and the list she gave him is the opposite of what his physician said to do . I…[Read more]

    • Welcome, Harold. You’re absolutely right to wash the fruits/veg since you can’t afford the organic items at this time. We all do what we can with what we have. Even the smallest move in the right direction health wise is cause for celebration. For example, the BSS program has suggested supplements, which can add up in cost. But many of us…[Read more]

Happy Thursday Everybody…I’ve been thinking about our food supply and GMO’s these days . Yesterday I got an email about Senator Barbara Baxter (CA) sponsoring another bill about disclosure for GMO foods. I’ve been more than a little angry since learning that the same companies that unknowingly supply GMO foods here in the USA supply versions…[Read more]

    • If companies had two versions avaiable – one with GMO’s and one without GMO;s which one would you buy and would you be willing to pay more for the one without GMO’s ? Similar to orgainic vegetables and regular vegetables. Just rambling on…

    • Would definitely buy non-GMO, would be willing to pay more. Thanks for the notice–will email my senators.

Happy Tuesday Everyone – This is going to sounds silly to some of you but I have been noticing bones lately that I haven’t seen or felt for years as my % fat decreases. The scale is still telling me 139 but should be inching downwards soon since I’ve been at that weight for over 5/8. I had to go buy a new pair of sandals this week because I kept…[Read more]

    • Your post is, as usual, right on target for me. Came back from my long weekend away and only lost 1 pound. Ate everything right although I did not get the 2 snacks in for 4 days. Glad I did not gain a pound! Nicole…keep writing you provide such inspiration for me and others. Thank you, Rusty

      • Rusty- in my book the snacks are not mandatory – if you are no hungry between meals don’t have a snack…just make sure though that you are drinking enough water. You won’t lose weight if you are dehydrated. I eat one of my snacks before my evening pills usually some sort of protein so that the pills are not taken on an empty stomach. My other…[Read more]

I found green tea rather blah and I never liked the taste much. I do like chai tea though and found this wonderful recipe to add to green tea to spice it up! I am also enjoying it more with warm coconut milk. I may improvise and add vanilla bean eventually. Its very forgiving. I am sure it would be great with a small touch of honey as well @…[Read more]

I am finding more questions as I read through the recipe book. Almost every recipe includes olive (or other) oil. Do all of you use that much oil in your diets? The calories seem rather high to me. I have to admit that my ‘norm’ has been use of deprivation diets so I may not be thinking clearly about this. I would like to hear from you…[Read more]

    • I don’t have the recipe book and so I can not answer your question about the book..but healthy oils are important to include in your diet…fat doesn’t make you fat.. my good fats include a tsp of olive oil in my salad two times a day, 1-2 ounces of nuts a day , 1 tsp flax seed in my ultra shake in the morning and the fat that is in my…[Read more]

      • Good information, Nicole. I was afraid my previous eating patterns were influencing my fears about fats. I too have terrible dry skin, especially living in dry, hot Las Vegas. Happy weekend all,
I received my BSS Cookbook and am deep into preparing my grocery list. I start the eating plan on Monday with Week 2 of Prep. (I’m not sure why it isn’t called Week 1 of the Basic Plan! LOL) I have a couple of questions:
The book and the Nutrition Basics download list carbs per meal as 15 grams. It further states, ” As…[Read more]

Hi Shelly – I usually use what is recommended on the protein powder I am using. my current protein powder recommends 1 scoop. that is 130 calories and 7.5 carbs ..I add 1 tsp ground flax seed and 1 cup of unsweetened coconut milk that brings carbs up to 10 and calories up to 199. I usually have 1 ounce of nuts before my walk so I have enough fuel…[Read more]

I just got my xray results back and I have Extensive calcific tendinitis. I googled this and found out it could be caused by diabetes. One thing the article said to do was to eliminate a calcium from my diet and that some nuts have…[Read more]

    • Google foods high in calcium…of course milk and cheese are the first things that come to mind. I suspect that this can be reversed over time with the proper diet. You will find as you follow this way of eating that you just keep getting healthier and healthier. Don’t get discouraged. Nicole

        Thanks Nicole,
I am already feeling so much better on this food plan. The pain I have been in all week was what made me so discouraged. I’m feeling better today. Resting my shoulder and taking NSADs are really working. Wish your body didn’t wear out.

I had already been eating pretty healthy when I started BSS plan in July 2012. My roughest week was between week 2 and 3. My blood pressure also decreased and I got off of…[Read more]
