Recipes 1 hour, 17 minutes agoHappy weekend all,
I received my BSS Cookbook and am deep into preparing my grocery list. I start the eating plan on Monday with Week 2 of Prep. (I’m not sure why it isn’t called Week 1 of the Basic Plan! LOL) I have a couple of questions:
The book and the Nutrition Basics download list carbs per meal as 15 grams. It further states, ” As…[Read more] -

Traveling with Food 2 days, 20 hours agoWell, it is vacation time and for those of you traveling to Northern California I want to mention a few places to eat, and stay on plan, in the bay area. Lyfe in Palo Alto, Dr Hyman is a consultant. There will be several more opening in the area this summer, so i was told.
Aqui, a small chain in the south bay. They are careful about using local…[Read more] -

Recipes 3 days, 6 hours agoTabbouleh with Quinoa
The more herbs you add the better. They are very healthy for you. Quinoa is a complete protein and fantastic for your health, especially if you are a vegetarian.
To make quinoa tabbouleh 6-8 servings:
Combine 2 cups cooked, cooled quinoa with
1 cup cherry tomatoes, quartered;
4-inch piece cucumber peeled, seeded, diced…[Read more]-

Margaret would it be suitable to use flax seed oil instead of olive oil??
-
Margaret Foster replied 2 days, 21 hours ago
If you like the taste of flax seed oil, you can use it. But I would use less, due to the taste.

Recipes 3 days, 8 hours agoTis the season for grilling! I will be attending a couple of cookouts later this month. I would love to hear of any ideas you may have for desserts or side dishes (other than greens/veg salad) to go with burgers and brats. I need a dessert or side dish to feed a group of 20, one that won’t spoil sitting out in the open for several hours. Thanks!

Hi Vimala, How about a quinoa tabbouleh. A bean salad will hold up as well. Or you could grill veggies, squash, yams, bell peppers, onions etc. These can be eaten with your hands. Just coat with olive oil and any seasoning you want.
A good dessert (not BSS) would be a strawberry-rhubarb crisp. You could try using ground almonds instead of some of…[Read more]-

I recently found some frozen smoothies at the local grocery store. I read the label and found NO SUGARS, NO PRESERVATIVES…. just pureed fruits and vegetables and juices of various fruits, wheat grass, barley, grains, some with tofu others without. They are high in calories about 240 cals per 8-10 ounces. I do not just drink the smoothie I…[Read more]

Recipes 1 week agojust wondering what is the best type of PROTEIN POWDER can be used in the shakes… Whey? Soy? any others. I want to make shakes but do not know which Protein powder is best to use.

Whey works great but if you are vegan, try brown rice powder or pea protein powder.

WHERE would I find such products?? I do not shop on the internet… once burned twice shy type of thing.
Can you recommend a store to look at?
-
Vimala replied 1 week ago
Hi Nonnie, I found mine at Fruitful Yield, a chain health food store. The employees are very helpful. You should be able to find the powders at other local health food stores — GNC, Vitamin World, etc. if there isn’t a Fruitful Yield near you. Some of the larger grocery stores have health food sections too. Do a search on the internet and…[Read more]

Hi Nonnie and Jackie, in the first 6 weeks on the BSS plan, we avoid dairy. So, no whey. Rice, hemp, soy, chia, and vegetable protein powders are good choices, if you aren’t allergic to them. Read the label carefully before you make your purchase — I recently bought some that had stevia (not in the ingredient list, but further down in the…[Read more]

So stevia isnt an allowed sweetener? (Just started the book last nite)
-
Vimala replied 6 days, 20 hours ago
That’s right, no sugars or sugar substitutes of any kind. Avoidng them will help you get off the sugar roller coaster. Then the cravings will disappear, and your blood sugar levels will be under control.

I like MRM Veggie Protein – I make mine with unsweetened coconut milk and 1 tsp bakers cocoa powder and sprinkle some cinnamon. I don’t add fruit or nuts as I prefer to eat a little fruit or nuts on the side so I get to chew a little bit. Nicole

Vimala replied 6 days, 6 hours ago
I looked it up, Nicole. It has stevia and xylitol. Sadly, not for me.

Oh well…since my fasting blood sugars are in the 80′s and I never have any cravings for sweets..I decided it was more important to have something that I liked the taste off just the way it is then to get something that I had to add berries or something to it to make me want to drink it. Since I don’t have bread or eggs and rarely have fruit…[Read more]

Dr Hyman sells several different ones on his web site – you can look at the ingredients in his that he recommends and then compare them with what is sold locally in either your grocery or health food store. I like to support my local health food stores when ever I can. Nicole

Vimala replied 5 days, 22 hours ago
I had not looked at his online store for protein powders, so I did today. I am so disappointed!! One of the powders has 17g of sugar!!! I stopped searching after a while, but all the ones I looked at had stevia or fructose. One even had hydrogenated oil!
I’m sad to say that the word HYPOCRITE comes to mind.
Perhaps Dr. Hyman @admin can…[Read more]-

I was “confused” when I read what was in his products…then I thought…it is in the long run all about profits and he will market what sells. It doesn’t diminish the message. I don’t agree with everything he has to say..I’m no doctor but I have read everything I can get my hands on and continue my research. There are compromises to be…[Read more]

Maybe they are marketed to the people on the Ultra metabolism diet or the other diet programs he has other than the Blood Sugar Solution? I don’t know why he has some that do not seem to be for Blood Sugar Solution followers but there are protein powders available out there that more nearly fit the lifestyle he espouses.
-
Vimala replied 4 days, 11 hours ago
Interesting point, Lisa. If that is indeed the case, all the non-BSS protein powders should be labelled so. If there is one place we BSS followers should not have to read labels, Dr. Hyman’s store should be it! I mean, he says in the book that he has sought out the best products for us to use. At the very least, I expect the products to meet…[Read more]

Very true, Vimala. I have also have Jarrow Formulas Brown Rice Protein. I don’t believe it has any sugars but it also has zero taste. I prefer the RAW one for taste but I am finishing off the Jarrow one to get rid of it. I must admit I have been adding a small amount of raw honey to it along with the fruit to make it more palatable, but I am…[Read more]

Having been without sugar substitutes for almost a year, even a little is too much for me. I’ve been getting my sweet taste from the fruit, not the protein powder in the shake. I wish I lived closer so I could buy the Jarrow off you!

-
lisathnos replied 4 days, 10 hours ago
The Jarrow one also does not have enough protein for me. I like a protein powder with a lot of protein and that is difficult to find in these vegetable ones. Lisa

Hi Nonnie, I use organic hemp protein. You can get it at Sprouts grocery stores as well as many health food and vitamin stores. Online also. Blessings, Margaret

Thank you, Margaeret. I’ve tagged your post as a Favorite. I know people in the SF area so it’s good to know about places to eat when I’m out there.
Glad you can use the info. I do wish more people would share their local favorites. Some of the good organic style restaurants do not get much press. Anything in your area that you know of?
