I’m on my seventh week. I sort of feel myself slipping, getting some cravings, trying to rationalize a potential bad food choice. I’m also struggling with exercise…just not feeling motivated to do it. I want to reverse my type 2 diabetes. That’s why I’m doing this. It could be the instant gratification thing…”you mean I have to exercise TOO?” I’ve lost 20 lbs! I’m still on 1000/day of metformin. My numbers are between 90 and 120. So I feel like I’ve really got a ways to go. Help. How do I stay motivated, all you wise bss-ers? -tasha

      Hi, Tasha,
First of all, congratulations on the weight loss and for sticking with it for 7 weeks. That is a huge accomplishment. Seems to me maybe you are just getting bored with the same old foods? Try not to let your food choices become boring by trying new things all the time. It really helps. The best thing I did for myself was to promise to follow the plan and exercise 5-6 days per week. Getting a short walk in every morning will leave you free in the evenings. After a very short while, you will start feeling great about yourself for all that hard work. A promise to exercise at least every other day for 10-15 minutes would help you get out there. You have already proven that you can do what you set out to do-you have followed one of the most difficult eating plans for 7 weeks. Give yourself a big hand!

      • Yes, I agree that exercise will be key here. It’s inspiring to hear how it works well for you. Thank you for the perspective, Janine, I needed it!

Hi tasha – I guess I’m right there with you. You’ve really done a good job getting to where you are. I think the secret is to stay on track but change the routine enough so that you find new ways to enjoy the healthy things we’ve learned. I know myself well enough to know I have to find the right combination of foods and exercise so that I can live with this plan forever. So what if you take metformin for longer than you might have hoped. It’s been around forever and is pretty tried and true. It has really good benefits. I don’t see myself getting too concerned about taking it from now on if necessary. I’m lucky I don’t take any of the meds that stimulate the pancreas to over produce insulin so that is not a worry either. Just hang in there and find your personalized version of all the steps we’ve learned and everything will balance out for you. None of us are perfect so cut yourself some slack and don’t give up. You’ve done such a good job! I understand what you’re going through. keep up posted. So glad you posted your thoughts. They really hit home for me. Thanks – barb

      • It’s nice to hear that others relate to my own experience of this journey. I do tend to be hard on myself, so acknowledging this is a process and that change happens in increments is important. Thanks Barb.

        • Hi – I cant add much here as Quentin and janine both were so spot on with their replies. Cravings can be really tough – and giving in starts that slippery slope – but one does need to forgive one’s self – it would be a real shame if after this long and succeeding you slid all the way to the bottom of the slope. Donot forget Dr. Hyman’s words about exercise and diabetes and it being a real kep to wellness. I am currently going to a gym and see women that are closer to 300# working on trying to gain control and their health back – everyone supports them. Im still in WK2 – and perhpas I will get the 7WK itch – I cant believe I will with motivation gushing all over me now – but we’ll see :-) get off the slope NOW :-)

    • Thank you!

    • That is why this forum is so great for giving each other support. It is good to hear that others are struggling with cravings and urges to ”cheat”. I wish that I could find a live support group in the Seattle area because I think it is soooo important to have that suport. I thank all of you for your support on this journey. Keep it up Tasha!!!

      • Nancy – I wonder ho0w many would be interested in ocasional conference chat sessions using say Skype? of course an immediate prob is the time dfference coast to coast….. I have been toying with the idea of posting it to BSS staff – – wonder how many out there would partake – not clear that I want to organize it at this point – but it is certainly doable for those with broadband IP access…. Anyone else thinking re: this avenue ?

        • I think Dr. Hyman should sponsor a retreat for us. :) I’'d be interested in the Skype idea, also not sure I’d want to organize it though. I believe you have to pay for Group Skype video. On Google+ there is a group video option, I think, but anyone who wanted to participate would have to get a Google+ acct.

          • Hi T:
well re: the retreat – wut a riot – the retreat wold squish the idea of giving into cravings with staff patrolling the kitchen with whips and billyclubs :-) For a real card-carrying sugar and icecream/pies/cake/ etc history laden with diet coke I have no cravings to speak of – well I do get them – and am finding I can deal with them with a bowl of bing cherries, blueberries and aforementioned whey protein shakes which also do a good job of beating cravings – the cravings are weaker and if strong last only five minutes or so.

Yes I recall now you are right re: Skype – I did a video trial with them to reconnect with some old workmates (I am 67 now and retired not by choioce or medical reasons – my job went to china and I thought I was safe as an engineering tech writer with Lucent) … I was wrong in that thinking 10 years ago.

I do have a google+ account but havent really fired it up at all….. yhou are right re: google video conferencing – it would prolly be hard to get a quorem thereeither but lets see if others are warm to the idea. cheers……….

    • Thanks you guys.
