Swallowing a mouthful of supplements caused what I believe was acid reflux this a.m. I have tried swallowing them in several mouthfulls, all at once, and find that no matter how, they sit rather heavily in my stomach and cause some discomfort for a short while. Anyone else experiencing something similar?

    • Hi, I cannot take all the supplements I have at once. I divide them up and take some one day and others the next day. They will not stay down if I do it all at one time, even if I eat almonds in between swallows. I also have to break some of the Essential Wellness pills in half. We can only do as much as we can do. The supplements do not have to be introduced until week 2 on the BSS plan.

Are you talking a fish oil one? Those can cause really bad (BAD!!) reflux. I take one that is not fish based from here: http://www.healthyforlifeusa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=55&Itemid=29 the liquid is cheap but on my does it ever taste BAD!! Though I only have to take 1/2 tsp twice a day so I suck it up and do it.

Yes. I was bothered with a fish aftertaste for a while, and couldn’t figure out where it was coming from until I realized it was from my supplement. That was months ago. I am used to them now. I tried different ways to take the handful of vitamins, but the best way for me it actually to stuff them all in my mouth at once and just drink water until they are all down. I have learned to wait about 15 minutes or so after I eat, too. Thanks for the tip about the non-fish supplements. I have a huge bottle, so they will be used up before I spend for more.

The after taste I’ve been told can be dealt with by freezing the fish oil pills, they will go father into your gut before they dissolve. Freeze a few and see if that helps.

There is a suggestion in the BSS book that helped me. Dr Hyman suggests freezing the fish oil supplements so that they pass deeper into your GI system before dissolving. Just don’t tkae them with a cup of warm tea or it kinda defeats the purpose of freezing those little buggers ;) . I take them before a meal for the same reason.

Anyway, that has helped. Besides that, I take the rest with food I also found that once I was off the acid reflux med I was taking, that the supplements did not seem to cause stomach distress.

”Cool” suggestion! : ) Thanks. Isn’t it kind of funny that the medication that was supposed to prevent acid reflux didn’t work with supplements until after you stopped taking it.

II orignally started taking this beasue of damage to my esophagus due to prescribed anti-inflammatories for way too long on a blown luumbar disc. the disc healed, but I ended up with an esophageal ulcer and voila, anti-reflux meds for it. for blippin’ years.

After reading the BSS. I decided that enough was enough. Talked with my doc and cut out the med being careful of the known trigger foods. It’s been to weeks. the first was challenging with a kind of rebound you get at first. But now, I am super pleased.

The med was working but the cost is too high. I am hoping in the long run, I can stay off of it. I do know that is common practice to prescribe these when an antiinflammatory like Celebrex is prescribed. I find that the general antiinflammotory effects of the BSS to be so strong that I am hoping to avoid any need for that kind of treatment but better 10 days than a lifetime on that stuff.
