There’s an interesting article in the Daily Beast, today, by Gary Taubes about a new combined effort to help get America’s kids healthy by following the conventional dietary/exercise ideas that we know don’t work. He is basically arguing instead for all the ideas in Dr. Hyman’s BSS. Those of us following this plan now know that losing weight has NOTHING TO DO WITH WILPOWER (ALTHOUGH it is ALWAYS ABOUT CHOICE). We have all found ourselves almost immediately freed from the control of the cravings brought on by the food choices we used to make. I wish everyone could experience the freedom I have found since beginning this eating plan. I am beginning to have a ”normal” relationship with food the likes of which I haven’t known since I was in my late teens-early twenties. Giving up the old favorites: COFFEE, chocolate, sugary treats, breads, even beans and lentils has been totally worthwhile. I can honestly say there is NOTHING that tastes as good as this freedom feels. Deep down inside, I still carry a fear of failure, but I am certain that by strictly following the BSS eating plan, I won’t fail.

Gary Taubes is amazing. I tried to read his book ”Good Calories Bad Calories” and it was very hard to get through. I think he was so MIT oriented that the engineering and technical points overwhelmed the average reader. I finally watched a couple of lectures online and sort of got the gist of his (at that time) revolutionary theories. This was years ago and he caused a huge ruckus (word?) in the medical/nutrition world. Even the Am. Diabeties Asoc. decried his claims. They were still recommending low fat, high carb diets for controling diabetes. But, he was spot on! It was the first big scientific paper on why fat doesn’t make us fat. Cardiologists all over the country were shaking their fingers at him! I just saw your post so now I’ll have to find the article. Sounds good.

I will have to read that book. Sounds like he was a trailblazer in his thinking. The sad fact is that diabetic coaches are still telling people attending diabetic classes to eat bread and drink orange juice and things like that. Each of my diabetic coworkers ( there are too many) has returned from those classes discussing what she learned, all of which was completely contrary to the idea of reversing the disease. Dr. Ornish has been revolutionary in his ideas about reversing heart disease, too.
