JANINE posted an update in the group
Diet & Nutrition 11 months, 1 week ago I have to take my own advice this week and find reason to be glad because my weight loss ground down to only 1 pound last week. Ugh. The dreaded plateau? True confession: I was fast and loose with legumes in my soups, with salt, and mangoes for my smoothies for the past two weeks, so I think I did it to myself. I am returning to my stricter approach, which I know works. I do have reason to be glad, because I lost 1 inch off my waist. I made myself feel better by buying smaller jeans and tee shirts. Also, last Friday as I buckled myself into my car, looked down at my legs, it hit me that I am 80 pounds less than I was four years ago. That really made me feel better!!

Thanks for sharing Janine! It’s important that you realize on your own what works for you and what doesn’t. The knowledge is the most valuable part of the whole journey to health! Fitting into smaller clothes is always motivation to keep on track. Keep up the good work! You are a healthy warrior!
From Morning edition today, a good story from NPR on coconut water
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2012/06/18/155115477/is-the-coconut-water-craze-all-its-cracked-up-to-be
Thanks for sharing, Lindsay. I have been seeing a lot of those ”waters” on the grocer’s shelves, lately. I think they are are as silly as the ”vitamin” flavored waters. People need to learn to love the flavor of clean, cool water, without all the fuss.
yeah, you know I think its okay as a treat. Sometimes I’ll throw a splash in my juices or smoothies just to add some flavor without a lot of additonal calories. But you do have to watch because a) they can have a lot of added sugar, just like most canned drinks and b) they can be pricey. There’s worse things you can drink of course. I think sometimes people do get bored with water and want to drink something else that is still healthy and I think coconut water, in moderation is okay, in addition to herbal/green tea, iced or hot. But I think that NPR is right to pick up on the ”faddish” marketing that is currently attached to coconut water as hot fitness trend. They are right to point out that that is just money making and nothing special about the drink.
I weigh tomorrow and I am anxious. I have half expected to be hitting a plateau every week and so far it has not happened but I am only in my 6th week of plan, with 2 weeks of prep before that. I think you and I are very close in our start dates. I started May 1st. When did you begin? Today was great for me because for once I have calories left over. Yes, I realize I am not supposed to count calories but I am and I am glad I am. Otherwise there is no end to the food I could eat!!!
Hi, LIsathnos,
I just hit delete instead of post so I am typing this all over again! Dummy me! I know what you mean about counting calories. I believe it is the key behind our successful weight losses. You know how people often say ”I don’t each much but I just can’t seem to lose weight”? Well, if they kept a food journal they would be very surprised, indeed! It takes a lot of juggling and planning to eat only 1200-1400 calories per day, and people eating regular diets far exceed that amount. I remember you were following a 1200 calorie diet, and it has worked very well for you. I believe you are much smaller than me, so your rapid weight loss is even more impressive.
I was surprised to see so many people experiencing plateaus when I was reading posts, yesterday. Keeping an honest food journal helped me deal with it because I knew I hadn’t eaten too much, but I also knew I had added legumes, a variety of fruits, and had too much salt for the preceeding two weeks, and those three things told me what my problem was. I am sure you will do well with your weigh in, but if it doesn’t yield what you want, don’t fret. It is only temporary. I have already seen the scale plummet since my Sunday weigh in, so it doesn’t take long to get things going, again. My tip: drink loads and loads more water than you normally do. It seems to be working for me. Best of luck with the scale!
BTW, I began 12 weeks ago (9 plan and 3 prep), so I think that takes me back to the last week of March for the first week of prep.
Janine,
I got both of your posts so it was an extra bonus! I was lucky this morning. I had lost 2 more pounds! I am ecstatic! I just can’t believe it and someone at my gym commented about it and asked me what I had been doing and when I told her she was well familiar with the book, Dr. Hyman, and had even met him at Canyon Ranch back in the 90’s. She said she has his recent appearance on PBS on TiVo and wondered if I would like her to make me a copy of it. Would I ever? It was very affirming speaking with her. My measurements are about the same but it is very puzzling because I think I am smaller in some areas but the measuring tape is not showing it. I am not too concerned about it. I know I am headed in the right direction.
So you and I are just about the same time along and have similar weight losses. Do you know about this App and website you can go to that you can log your food and exercise into and it tracks your progress and adds up calories, called MyFitness Pal? My sister and I are both using it and like it. It is free. The more you use it the more it recognizes your foods and exercise and it gets very quick to log everything. I can log in on my phone and on my computer and it syncs them together.

I am going to sign off for now. I have a book for book club Thursday night I am trying with all my might to finish and am only half finished. All the best to you. I’ll be looking for you.
