@jrhsareh Hi Janine, I was wondering how the HIT training is going for you. I watched the Michael Mosley show you mentioned, very interesting information. I was impressed by the huge improvement in the insulin test.
Are you doing any other cardio or weight training as well as HIT for 3 minutes per week? -

@jrhsareh Hi Janine, I learned from my PT how to use the stairmaster without hurting my feet. I did 158 flights yesterday! It was SLOW going (another ’long run’ equivalent) but I did it. Wahoo!!!!

JANINE replied 1 month ago
OK, I am giving you the crown as QUEEN of the stairmaster!

@jrhsareh If you like swimming, by all means buy a suit and swim. I luv to swim 2, and believe me I’m no Esther Williams. Besides, suits with skirts are still IN, so go for the H2O. I’m 82, swim 3 days a week for 45 min. Lost 18 #s. good luck

Way to go, Ginny! Swimming feels so wonderful. I love doing backstroke because the sound of my breathing is the only thing I hear and it is so soothing! I can swim for 45-60 minutes, straight. I will go and try some suits, but my last look a month or two ago was very, very disappointing. Maybe, a suit with a skirt or one of the “romper”…[Read more]

@jrhsareh Hi Janine, I just wanted to tell you that I went back on the stair master today to test it out after my foot issues. I did 125 flights. It might have been too much because the foot pain came back with a vengeance at the tail end of the workout. I think I may have to say good bye to my go-to cardio machine till I’m completely healed.…[Read more]

Wow! So many flights! I can see why your foot hurt afterwards. I am able to climb 60 flights. I can’t imagine doing twice that amount. Your cardiovascular system must be very healthy.
I tried the bicycle the other day, too. Seems very pleasant after the stairs. I have an irritated area o. The side of one foot that has required me to pull out…[Read more]-

Don’t be too impressed! I had to keep my heart rate in zone 2 (i.e. moving VERY SLOWLY on the stairs). It is the equivalent of a long run in the running world — slow pace but longer distance . My heart is healthy but it needs to get much fitter! I’ll know in a couple of months when I get re-tested just how much stronger it’s gotten. …[Read more]

Hi. Vimala
I did a short bit on the stairs, plus some rowing and cycling this a. m. My foot did not like the stairs. I had heel spurs and waited out the problem while remedies took effect. Hope I can manage this problem, too.
Stepped on the scale and happily saw that my workouts help keep me at a good despite two dinners out. I am keeping at…[Read more]-

Hi Vimala, How about starting with a short time on the stair master, when your foot is better, and working up to your mind boggling 125 flights: ) Your foot, like your heart, may take time to get 100%.
Blessings, Margaret-
JANINE replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Hi, Margaret
I know we are both blown away by Vimala’s prowess on the stairs, no matter the pace! 123 flights is simply awesome!!!!!-
Vimala replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
I know you, it won’t be long before you are doing it too!

Yes, I’ve learned my lesson, I will ease into it when my foot issues are resolved. Can’t wait till that happens. You and Janine are very kind, but anyone can do it if they have their ipod or other distraction to pass the time! Have a wonderful weekend!

@jrhsareh – Hi Janine – You’ve been pretty quiet ….so I wanted to check in ..how did the Sunday weigh in go…did the scale smile upon you ? or….is it now in orbit circling the earth because you through it out the window? I hope all is well with you. I did the six mile walk around the local lake yesterday afternoon while Phill sat in the sun…[Read more]

I believe it is our way of ”paying it foward” and encouraging others to not just be a lurker. On the more selfish side…it keeps us on track too.

Hi Janine, You said you were a coffee snob!! Have you ever considered becoming a tea snob or an olive oil snob? They would be fun things to get into. I really get into tea, olive oil, olives and dark chocolate myself.
As cooks we need to refocus our interests to stay successful on this program.
Stay well, Margaret

You have a good point! I am already a chocolate snob, but I could work on the other two!

Hi, Vimala,
I have to say that the bursts of speed are great and make my following workouts feel easier! I still do an hour or more 5-6 days per week. No one would lose an ounce with only 3 x 1 minute intense bursts per week. I do 40 minutes of cardio each weekday and about 30 minutes of weights. On the weekends I do only cardio for an hour to…[Read more]
You probably can’t lose weight on just 3 mins of HIT a week. But that is what the researcher on the show seems to recommend. And doing only the HIT for 4 weeks made Mosley’s 2nd VO2 max test much easier. I’m actually more interested in the insulin aspect of HIT, not so much the weight loss part.
So you do HIT for a minute total, then move on…[Read more]
I am baffled by your abbreviations. I do the burts BEFORE I do my normal workouts, but I do both. I don’t rely on 3 minutes of cardio per week to improve my health. I can’t see that doing the high-intensity-training and then moving onto the regular workout will impact negatively. Seems to me that both are a good idea. That is what I do at…[Read more]
HIT – High Intensity Training. VO2 Max – the test he did on the bike with the mask on his face. He did 2 of them, one before and one after the 4 weeks of HIT.
Thanks for your answer. I was trying to figure out if it made sense to do HIT separately (different day, perhaps?) while still doing regular cardio/weights. Glad to hear that HIT makes…[Read more]
I figured out that first part! : ) I think the HIT benefits our bodies in ways that regular exercise doesn’t seem to match, but I also think that our bodies would suffer negatively if all we did were 3 short minutes per week. As I said, I do the HIT every other day, but don’t limit my bursts to just 3 times per week. Depending on how the…[Read more]
Figured I’d cover it all since I couldn’t tell which baffled you, and both concepts were highlighted in the show.
As for stair climbing: the back half of my foot hung over the stair as I stepped on each tread. I had to consciously think about foot placement, and remember to place the ENTIRE foot on the tread. Occasionally the front of my…[Read more]
Thanks for sharing. I have had that problem in the past, but this current problem is with a bony area on the middle, outside area of my foot. I think wearing simple flats too often in the past few months has caused the irritation.
I hope the shoes with better support that I have been wearing will do the trick. So far so good!
