I’ve been trying to do that for some time but you have to a) pay attention to your body and b) eat slowly so that your body has time to react. It definitely does help cut down on what you eat. Satisfied rather than full is the feeling I aim for.

The first time I started doing that I was able to loose a significant amount of weight. Also not eating until you are really hungry helped me a lot as well. I was able to drop 40 pounds initially. I have gained back about 10, but I think it is due to the fact that I lost focus. I will have to get back on track again.
