Dr Hyman has eloquently provided the ground rules for optimizing your nutrition lifestyle. So now the question is are you acting on your motivation? Share with us what drives you through the difficult times and how you celebrate your successes.

    • I keep my motivation up, by reminding myself of the very positive results I have had. (no more arthritis pain, no restless leg syndrome, no foggy brain etc) I do not want to go back there.
I also want to succeed in following the entire plan, so when I am tempted to eat a food that is not allowed I remind my self of how I might feel about the action afterward (disappointed, or irritated with my self). I also think about, ’do I want to post to everyone that I had a deep fried onion or whatever’. Peer pressure as well as peer support can work wonders for me.
The bottom line for me is, what do I really want. Do I want to go along with the people around me and have a glass of wine or a steak or do I want to follow my own lead and be self referenced. Do I want to give in to a moment’s pleasure (that might not be so pleasant later) or do I want to choose to go for a later outcome.

      • Good internal questions that we all face. I learned a great lesson this week about planning ahead before going out with others. Looking online at a restaurant’s menu help one make good choices. Isn’t that what helps us during the week? When we plan out daily menus, shop accordingly, and take the time to prepare healthy meals, we do so much better than if we were to allow ourselves to make choices on the spur of the moment when we are hungry. People who see others trying to make healthy lifestyle changes often feel somewhat threatened by new behaviors that are opposite their own. The feel a bit uncomfortable by the reality of their own choices, which are highlighted by the healthier choices you are making. It can be difficult. The other night, desserts were passed around and I had to really insist that I did not want any. Constantly thinking of my health goals keep me on the right path, as I am sure is the case with you. You should be proud of yourself for staying strong. (I asked my waitress to bring me a small serving of olives if others ordered appetizers. They all wanted some of my olives!)

        • Of course theyy did! Who says that healthy food isnt as attractive and inviting as lesser quality food? It is in our biology to yearn for that which is life supportive and olives definitely provide the sustenance we all crave to live our best life. What a gift you gave to your company to simply be you. Thank you for sharing!

      • These are the coolest insights Margaret and will serve you when the 6 weeks are up! Thank you for sharing and being such a great part of the community.

    • I try not to be a victim,.I take a strong defence against anything that will have me fall off. There are lots of pressures from the outside world to have me give in. The pressures are presented in subtle ways and very luring ways. If I am going to treat myself and splurge then it will be a planned thing I decide to do. It is not something that is presented to me by others.

      • This is really wise Paul. Maintaining an internal locus of control is critical to sustaining a healthy lifestyle when the 6 weeks are over. As you said, tempatations are all around and stimulating messages are plenty! While not all human noise is negative, most of food marketing can be! So keep up the excellent train of thought!
