Here is a vegetable roasting idea
To roast veggies, cut into 2-3 inch pieces. Coat with olive oil, I just pour olive oil on my hand and rub over veggies. Sprinkle spices over if you want (curry, allspice, salt and pepper, chili or your favorite)
Place in an oiled glass or ceramic pan, in a single layer.
Roast at 350-375 for 30 minutes and check.…[Read more]

    • Thanks for the tips, Margaret. I did roast some veggies. My favorites of the mix I made, all on the Advanced plan, are Asparagus, Red Onions, Zucchini, and Red Bell Peppers. I have never been a big onion eater because I do not like the after-taste/breath; but the roasting is making onions one of my favorite veggies.

Hi, I wanted to mention some good news, the farm bill is being written, in congress, and it looks like the organic food industry will be given the right to an advertising campaign. This is at no expense to the government and is under the same law that gave us the ‘Got Milk’ and beef ads. So, although there was resistance, healthy food is…[Read more]

Well, it is vacation time and for those of you traveling to Northern California I want to mention a few places to eat, and stay on plan, in the bay area. Lyfe in Palo Alto, Dr Hyman is a consultant. There will be several more opening in the area this summer, so i was told.
Aqui, a small chain in the south bay. They are careful about using local…[Read more]

    • Thank you, Margaeret. I’ve tagged your post as a Favorite. I know people in the SF area so it’s good to know about places to eat when I’m out there.

      • Glad you can use the info. I do wish more people would share their local favorites. Some of the good organic style restaurants do not get much press. Anything in your area that you know of?

      • After you tag a favorite, how do you display them?

        • You can view it in 2 ways. You must be logged in to do this. If you are on your page, look at the list starting with “Activity, Profile…” Click on Favorites, you will see all the posts that you have chosen as Favorites. I don’t think there is a way to search within this subset for a specific post. If you are on the main board,…[Read more]

    Tabbouleh with Quinoa

The more herbs you add the better. They are very healthy for you. Quinoa is a complete protein and fantastic for your health, especially if you are a vegetarian.

To make quinoa tabbouleh 6-8 servings:
Combine 2 cups cooked, cooled quinoa with
    1 cup cherry tomatoes, quartered;
4-inch piece cucumber peeled, seeded, diced…[Read more]

  • Hi, After 14 months on the BSS plan I am deciding to redo the full 6 week advanced plan. Janine inspired me!
I have returned to the advanced plan for a week or two, but not the entire 6 weeks. I will be starting on May 24, so that puts me in a prep week.
I do not have much to prep, but I will have to put my Matcha afternoon drink and my dark…[Read more]

    • wow Margaret …my thoughts will be with you Margaret…I’ll be cheering you on from afar! So what is the weight goal? Keep us posted on how you are doing ! Nicole

      • Hi Nicole, Thanks. I am hoping for another 10-15 pounds. I will not do that in 6 weeks, because I do not have all that inflammation induced weight I started with before. But I want to get there. 15-20 pounds a year is plenty for me with this heart condition. My blood pressure drops dramatically when I loose weight.

        • As you get closer and closer to goal weight ..the pounds come off slower and slower but they do eventually come off. ( or at least that is the premise that i am living by these days)

    • Stay strong. I think there is something about this lifestyle that, the longer you’re on it, the further you want to take it, in one form or another.

      • Thanks Shupac, Another woman, Anna just commented about how she is on plan after more than one year! This really does get comfortable after a while.

    • That’s impressive, Margaret! We’ll be cheering you on. Keep us posted on your adventure.

    • Hi Margaret, Funny we should connect back here after all this time! I’m glad to see you’re doing well, and my heart is with you as you undertake this adventure.

I am still on the program in pretty much the original way–the only dairy I have is a little fresh, local goat cheese, no gluten or other grains except a little quinoa now. I like the…[Read more]

      • Hi Ann,Great to hear from you. Thanks for the encouragement. I too use quinoa without any problems. I can do without it for 6 weeks though. I am pleased to know you are doing so well. For many of us this eating style is very appealing for the long run.
It is wonderful that you rid yourself of the unwanted weight: )
        Stay well, blessings, Margaret

  • Hi,
For most of my adult life I have been eating ‘healthier’ according to what the latest news flash about food was. I always did strive to get more vegetables into my diet. Often though, I would hit a wall and the vegetables I had been eating were not eatable for me. I would get the veggies or soup out and I would feel full. I could not even…[Read more]

    • Wow, I have never heard of this condition. Our bodies are so smart to reject too much of one nutrient. Thanks for sharing, Margaret!

      • Hi Vimala, I am with you on sweeteners in the protein supplements. I cannot use meals supplements because they are just too sweet for me. I have to use one third of an envelope for one two cup serving. The protein powders are the same way. I have to dilute them so much that there is no point to using them.
I will always love dark chocolate, only a…[Read more]

    • Very interesting. I know there have been times when I feel full after a small amount of a meal. I haven’t paid attention to see if it happens recurrently with certain foods, but I will. However, when this happened, I didn’t lose my taste for the food. I wanted to eat it, it just felt like a few bites was more than enough. Not that I didn’t…[Read more]

  • Hi, I wanted to mention eggplant. I love it! Well i had an eggplant ragu for dinner (over spaghetti squash) and ate a lot. It was fun because I went to a friend’s house and we cooked dinner together using things from our gardens and the farmers market.

    • I have heard of nightshade vegetables causing inflammation in some people – potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant and some peppers. Google nightshade vegetables to read more about it. Sorry to hear about this …Nicole

    • So glad to hear that the discomfort was not prolonged, Margaret. Perhaps having small amounts won’t trigger the bad reactions. Then you can still enjoy the food without the side effects.

Hi, Vimala and I had an exchange about aha moments, when reading the BSS book.
My moment was when i read that food can effect gene expression. In other words, our genes can be manipulated by the food we eat. They can work or go to sleep. We can switch them off and on.
This really got me in line with using the Blood Sugar Solution plan. It was a…[Read more]

    • You are really asking for some of us to dig deep into our memories . when I first read BSS my big revelation was that food sensitivities can cause so many issues through out the body. • Like you, Margaret, “Food is Information” i.e. gene expression, was most definitely an aha moment for me. I had no idea that we can affect our genes simply by the food we eat. How cool is that??? Similarly, “Food as Medicine” was an eye opener. It made me ask about any food I was about to consume, “Is this food medicine or poison to my…[Read more]

    • I’ve had a lot of Aha moments. I never realized eating sweetened foods, even when sweetened with natural sweeteners such as honey and cane sugar and stevia could cause cravings for more sweet things. • Hi, Last night I attended a talk by Mark Bittman. I really enjoyed it.
He made a point about following his plan that really applies here.
We are not in this to be perfect, we are following the BSS plan to do the best that we can do. Because this is a life style or diet style change the point is to do our best.
So, we can relax a little about…[Read more]

Hi, I wanted to mention sablefish (called black cod in some areas) It is a protein that is highly antienflammatory(sic). As you probably know most animal protein is inflammatory so I am glad to see something that goes against that trend.
