In reply to: mariberry posted an update in the group Diet & Nutrition Hi again – I had hoped someone from Dr. Hyman’s staff onsite here would have addressed by query (below); however, it is Sunday so perhaps everyone is off. I […] ViewDitto on everything Mariberry says above. We need a lot of clarification for the Advanced Plan – beans included. I have received confliction responses on beans Would someone on Dr. Hyman’s staff please take the time and summarize Advanced Plan items that are forbidden, including beans? Thanks in advance for your responses.

Diabesity / Diabetes 10 months, 3 weeks agoAlmost to week three and will weigh in tomorrow. So far so good. I am missing my Starbucks coffee in the mornings, drinking herb teas instead. Not much kick to that. I would appreciate any drink suggestions that anyone has to offer. I am gettong a bit tired of club soda and lemon. Any suggestions? I am assuming that decafinated ice tea…[Read more]

I have read Dr. Hyman saying that green tea is beneficial. I drink hot green tea in the morning (has a little caffeine but not enough to be troubling). I also like Roibos Tea (a red tea which also has health benefits and no caffeine. You could make nice iced teas with those (even with other herbal teas that have nice flavors). Good luck!

Have you ever considered jazzing up your regular water with some mint and cucumber? I find that really refreshing and both ingredients are acceptable on the advanced plan.
-
lisathnos replied 10 months, 3 weeks ago
Almond milk, hemp milk, rice milk, etc. are all allowed. Smoothies are good as a breakfast option. Green tea is good, as mentioned above. I have had V8 on occasion. Mostly I just drink a lot of water.
-
Hi, Green tea is ok, hot or iced. Some people enjoy hot almond milk with spices (chai spices) like cinnamon, cardamon, ground coriander, ginger, clove, allspice, nutmeg and so on.
Good luck with your weigh in. Margaret -

I too struggle with giving up coffee. I am told that getting more sleep and eating right will eventually give me more “real energy” instead of the “fake energy” I relief on coffee for. I occasionally have a relapse. On the advanced plan we are encouraged not to use any artificial sweeteners. If I make an exception, I use stevia and I do…[Read more]

Diabesity / Diabetes 10 months, 3 weeks agoNow that I am eating more vegetables, I particularly like salt on my tomatoes and radishes. I have tried the No Salt products which are 17% potassium and no sodium. For the Advanced Plan, can I use the No Salt products containing high quantiies of potassium?
-
Hi Mark, I do not know about the salt alternatives. But if you do not use much regular salt could do. Remember you are taking in much less salt than you were by giving up processed foods, dairy products and baked goods like bread.
Blessings Margaret

Diabesity / Diabetes 10 months, 4 weeks agoAlmost 2 weeks and 5 pounds off. Trying to find as many veggie options as possible. Think I will make after all!
Questions for Advanced level:
Are there any acceptable chewing gum options?
Can I have blue berries in my shakes?
-
kzaleski replied 10 months, 4 weeks ago
Mark- Yes 1/2 cup blueberries are allowed. I like them frozen, I also add almond meal (just ground almonds) to my smoothie.

One more question. I assume tofu is acceptable assuming prepared with acceptable ingredients? Thanks again!
-
Susan Schwartz replied 11 months, 1 week ago
Fresh tofu is fine. You usually find it immersed in water in a 10-14 oz package. Whole Foods also has fresh tofu prepared that is usually on-plan. Be sure to check the ingredients. Processed tofu products are not okay and should be avoided.

Diabesity / Diabetes 11 months, 1 week agoFor the advanced plan, I understand no alcohol or catfine. What about decaf coffee and tea? Also, have I possibly missed other acceptable drinks suggested?
Thanks again,
Mark
-
lisathnos replied 11 months, 1 week ago
Correct, coffee and alcohol are not allowed on the Advanced Plan, nor the Basic Plan. No also to decaf coffee and the only tea allowed is green tea. I have had a V8 juice a couple of times. Mostly I just drink water. I think that is one of the reasons this plan has a two week ramp up period in which you slowly lower your consumption of coffee…[Read more]

You can also have herbal teas.

Water with lemon juice, or fresh ginger slices or strawberries work well. Coconut milk and almond milk are popular. Almond milk heated until frothing then adding green tea and thai spices is a good hot drink.
Good luck on the plan, Margaret-

Hey thanks that sounds good. Sandy

Sandra Runyan replied 11 months ago
Oh ya what are thai spices? Sandy
-
Margaret Foster replied 11 months ago
Hi Sandy, That was a typo, I meant Chai spices. Any combo of things like cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamon, ground coriander seed, clove, and allspice. You can buy chai tea bags and put them in hot almond milk to brew. Leave them for 5 minutes or more. Drinking this in the evening can help some people sleep. It is suggested with milk, ghee and sugar in…[Read more]

Question. Please define ”grains ” relative to references in The Blood Sugar Solution pages 207 and page 276. Last sentence on page 206 leads me to believe that beans are not considered grains, but as protein. I am specifically interested in knowing if I can eat beans in the Advanced Program. Thanks in advance for any input.
-
Margaret Foster replied 11 months, 1 week ago
Hi Mark, When they say grains, they mean all culinary grains. Some things cooked as grains are grasses or seeds.
As for beans, none are allowed on the advanced plan. They create havoc with certain people’s blood sugar levels (mine for sure).
The only bean that some people eat on the advanced plan is a small amount of hummus (garbanzo beans).-

Diabesity / Diabetes 11 months, 1 week agoMe too! More or less looking forward to the first 6 week challenge. Could anyone please comment on the use of stevia sweeteners during this period?
-
Margaret Foster replied 11 months, 1 week ago
He Mark, No stevia is allowed because the body/mind reacts to it in a similar fashion as other sweeteners.
After a few days things like almond butter and things with cinnamon will taste sweet.
Good luck on your journey, Margaret -
Susan Schwartz replied 11 months, 1 week ago
I abstained from all sweeteners, including stevia, for the first three months on the plan. Then I added back a cup of coffee with a drop of stevia and continued to do fine. After 7 months I also added back grapefruit with a little stevia. Other than that small amount of stevia, I have avoided all other sweeteners and don’t miss them. I would…[Read more]

Hi Mark – I suspect you didn’t get the response you requested. Unfortunately, the forum is a community forum for like-miinded individuals to give and gain support and encouragement – not any kind of professional advice. I suspect we are to seek out a functional medicine doctor for specific questions. I find this a bit frustrating as it can be a…[Read more]
