Thanks but I’m not diabetic – just overweight! I like the fact that Dr Hyman uses real food and includes all the good things we need. I will do my best with sticking to it this time but I do really miss baking. I tried his soy/nut pancakes yesterday and found them to be really filling so with pancake day fast approaching I feel I can participate at last.

    • The reason the Blood Sugar solution does not recommend agave nector and honey is because diabetics like me have their blood sugar go up too much with ANY sugar. Plus one of the things that Dr Hyman is wanting us to do is change our tastes so that we are not needing to have things so sweet. But get off the sugar addiction and carb addiction. I know…[Read more]

    • Hi Janet, If you miss baking, try the blueberry muffins or pumpkin muffins in the recipes section. You can play with the ingredients and will experience baking and eating in a different light. The muffin recipes could possibly be thinned to make pancakes as well.

    • Welcome back Janet – I have found that there are a lot of recipes in the books that are not really for diabetics. There are many people here for many different ailments. I just move on to the next recipe or think about how I can alter the recipe to suit my needs . It is a little confusing for people especially those just starting out. These days…[Read more]

Barb – have you tried using silken tofu in place of the cream cheese. If you also add some healthy oils i.e. flaxseed you will get a really creamy taste. By the time you have finished the BSS I don’t think your taste buds will require sugar!

    • barb replied 1 year ago

I know Janet, I know you’re right. I still think about ways to modify some of the sweet things I’ve enjoyed in the past. I’ll have to give the tofu a try and I’ll have to wait to see how dairy impacts me down the road. I don’t crave any sweets and haven’t since I started. I’m really grateful for that. I’m not pre diabetic – just have a sugar addiction. I also think I may be gluten intolerant. This and wanting to lose the middle aged spread are the reasons I’m doing this eating plan. It’s just I can’t see me being able to do without baked goods for the rest of my life!

    • i dont’ wanna live without baked goods forever either…but ideally i’d love to keep them just to one day …something like that.

Janet – me again. It’s been so long since I made the concoction described I forgot I also add 1/2 c. pineapple tidbits in juice (but drained) Now I would probably buy fresh pineapple. It’s very sweet so it doesn’t take much additional sweetener. My sister-in-law also adds sliced banana as she serves this.

Hi nik….. , That is an interesting explanation and may very well be true. It wouldn’t surprise me at all. I long ago ended my addiction to diet coke. It was a bad one. Does that also apply to xylitol?

    • It seems to me that I read on the webpage somewhere, that even xylitol is not allowed on the first 6 weeks of the diet plan. It seems that Dr Hyman has an article about diet drinks and he mentioned almost every sweetner. Maybe someone can give you the link.

      • I think you are right. I’ve been experimenting with gluten free low GI baking but it doesn’t feel good afterwards.

    • Yes, any processed sweetener, natural sweetener or artificial sweetener is forbidden. On the advanced plan 1/2 cup of berries and sweet tasting things like cinnamon, leaf mint and jicama are allowed. The basic BSS plan allows a bit more fruit of a certain type.
