Hi everyone! I’ve read the posts and find them very helpful and encouraging. I bought the book a few weeks ago and have been slowly implementing the plan. My goal is to regain my health, lose 50#, and once again enjoy many of the activities I once did (hiking, biking and swimming). My biggest obstical is that I have horrible urges and cravings for sweets and carbs at night. Seems like I can’t find the right handle to get it under control and was wondering if any of you had any advise. I’ve tried all the usual distractions – taking baths, working on projects, but the urges and cravings are still there. Any suggestions?

    • Hi, Stacy,
The very restrictive advanced eating plan has worked well for me. Also, mute the sound and divert your attention from all those continuous food commercials, and don’t watch cooking shows. Both those tricks helped me in the early weeks. I have been following the plan for a total of 12 weeks, with 3 weeks of prep and 9 weeks on plan. A couple of weeks ago I added back legumes and varied my fruits in my smoothies and I found my weight loss slowed to only 1 pound last week. I am eliminating the legumes and sticking to the berries, only. My summertime tip for berries: wash and freeze them and keep a bagfull in the freezer to have as your evening treat immediately after dinner. I generally have 4 ounces of frozen berries each night and in their frozen state they take longer to eat and have a bigger impact on keeping me satisfied.

      • Thank you so much for your response! I have noticed that in the past I do best on a no carb diet. I even loss 35 lbs 2 summers ago following a no carb program. Only problem was that as soon as I had a carb – in my case it was some drinks and cake at my daughter’s wedding – my resolution fell apart. I started craving carbs again and couldn’t seem to get back on my program. It’s unbelievable how addicting sugar and carbs are. Do you have any favorite recipes? Your weight loss is impressive.

        • HI, Stacy,
I know exactly what you mean about the addictive quality of carbs. I have to confess that when I added way too many beans into my soups these past two weeks, and added mangoes (love those!) to my smoothies, I felt slight stirrings of cravings. That could be why I didn’t lose but one pound last week. I have been drinking more water than a fish the past few days and been very careful not to have too many carbs and I can already see the difference on the scale since Sunday. I like to make soups or fish salads for my lunches so that I can make a large batch and just grab and go for two or three days. My all time favorite soup these days is the boulliabaisse, which is a bit pricey to make, but so luxurious to eat. It freezes very well, too. It is very, very easy to make, as well. For lunch, one of my favorite easy and low carb salads are made with either canned salmon or mackerel. Todays salad is mackerel with 2/3 can artichoke hearts, cut into bite-size pieces, 1 bunch chopped green onions, 6 oz roasted red bell pepper chopped, 1/2 bunch parsley chopped, 3 jalapeno stuffed green olives chopped (only 3 because I am watching salt), zest and juice of one lemon, 2 teaspoons spicy brown mustard (which, when eating carbs, is fantastic in a baked potato!), 1 tbl olive oil, pepper, garlic and onion powders (without salt). I mixed the oil, mustard, juice and spices in a jar and tossed the dressing with the fish and veg. I used to put candied jalapeno slices into all my fish and bean and potato salads. I think I miss having that condiment for my cooking more than I miss sugar or coffee! Also, the vegetarian chili recipe with beans is great! I used mushrooms instead of zucchini or quinoa. I made one with all veg and it is good with some added chicken. I put cumin, cilantro, and jalapenos into my salmon salad, along with all the veg I mentioned above. I love putting beans into my fish salads, because the fiber is very, very filling, but I am pacing myself with beans these days and limiting my intake to maybe only one day per week.
I hope one day I can eat carbs without feeling like I want to eat everything in sight, afterwards!

    • Hi Stacy, Janine is so right. start watching only commercial free TV or netflix shows. The TV ads are totally a problem.
A few days after you start the BSS plan you will probably loose a lot of cravings. As your blood sugar evens out you will not be as hungry. Also PGX capsules helped me a lot I only took one at a time and they curbed my appetite.
Good luck on your adventure, Margaret

    • I found the first few weeks the hardest. Sometimes I felt irritable and deprived. Now it’s been 3 months on the program. While I can’t say that I never crave or miss a food I am not eating–I think you’ll find that the cravings diminish quite a bit. I am surprised how I have adjusted to a virtually no carb lifestyle, no dairy, no gluten. I wouldn’t have thought I could I could do it. But I feel so much better, enjoy the 20 lb. weight loss, and know that I intend to continue. I actually like a lot of the food and just made a decision I was not going to complain about what I can’t have but focus on the foods I can have and choose to eat and I really like them and be grateful that I really care about my health. And I make a big point of finding lots of other things that give me pleasure–so really, my life is better. The hardest challenges for me now are social gatherings–though usually I can easily enough avoid the carbs. I haven’t really been inviting friends over to dinner yet though I’ve gone to a number of restaurants and had great success finding healthy meals. I have to add more exercise and sleep more.

      • Thanks for all the words of encouragement. I still have not officially started, I’m having a hard time comitting to giving up coffee. Anyway, I love reading the posts because it inspires me. I currently experiencing some muscle/skeletal issues with my upper back and shoulders. Went to the chiro yesterday and am getting a message today. I wonder if this program will help with those issues. I’ve had cronic upper back and neck problems for many many years.

        • I too have had a series of battles with letting go of coffee. In the end it was only the heartburn I realized it was triggering that forced me to let go of it. One thing that helps me is to say–this need not be forever. But for now, I am going to detox and heal my body and later decide what I can add back in. My holistic doctor suggested trying yerba matte tea–which does have about 1/3 of the caffeine in it that coffee does–as a way to step down from coffee. It is a pleasant tea. I really hope the chiropractor and the massage helped with those muscle/skeletal issues. I have been quite surprised by the extent to which my lower back problems and joint issues have improved with this blood sugar solution program and I’m hoping you’ll see some real differences too in the way you feel. For me, taking up yoga has also really helped make me feel better.
