Don’t beat yourself up about a slip up here and there. Dr. Hyman wrote about his 90/10 rule—90% of the time he sticks to his good food diet; he leaves himself open for 10% of different foods (going out, traveling, the occasional treat). You’ve done a great job achieving your goal and sticking with it. Take a walk, congratulate yourself,…[Read more]

    • Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate your taking the time. I did very well today and those cookies are in the garbage!

To encourage: I started the BSS in July and have finally reached my first goal of losing 10% of my body weight (24 lbs). I aimed for 10% because I read that just that amount can dramatically lower your risks of many diseases. I thought I couldn’t give up gluten and dairy, but I’ve not had cravings like previous “diets” and the results…[Read more]

    • hi E – congratulations on getting off insulin and losing 24 lbs. that is so great. I have not been able to totally eliminate my novolin Insulin and I started this lifestyle on July 3. I have been able to reduce my dosage from 20 units to 5 units 2x a day. I am not on metformin . I’m now on day 5 of week 12. Keep up the good work! Nicole

In reply to: Elyse Krupnick posted an update in the group Diabesity / Diabetes I have 3 days to go on my 6 week program. I have lost 15 1/2 lbs and have reduced my insulin by 17 units 2x daily. I am pleased with my progress […] View

Wow, you’ve done great so far! I’ve been at this all summer and have lost 17 pounds. My neuropathy doesn’t seem to have improved much but it took a long time to get this way. Have you added alpha lipoic acid to your supplements? I’ve been phasing in all of the supplements and am hopeful that this one will help with neuropathy.

    • I have been taking the ALA but am switching to R-ALA because it’s supposed to be more effective. I take all the recommended supplements which, considering how many bottles I open each morning, is one of my ”exercise” routines!

      • I got a couple of those sun-sat pill dispensers with am and pm slots and get my pills ready for two weeks at a time . At 61 I decided that I qualify as an older person who can forget whether or not I’ve taken my pills and needed the help remembering what day it is (wink). So each morning and late afternoon all I’ve got to do is dump them out.…[Read more]

In reply to: Nicole posted an update in the group Diabesity / Diabetes Lately I have been having a hard time keeping from snacking within 3 hours of going to bed as suggested. My day start early -I am usually up and about […] View

I’m with you, Nicole. I start out at 5:00 a.m. and usually eat my biggest meal at lunch time. Part of my evening snacking is just habit from years of family tradition. My mom used to make a bowl of popcorn almost every night! So first I dealt with the idea of habit. My success on this lifestyle change has given me more energy, which…[Read more]

I appreciate your reminder that this is a journey and my body is hopefully doing some mighty healing. I definitely need to improve hydration. Portion size is OK; if anything, I’m not eating enough. Not stressed (except about my high blood sugars). I hate the idea of going back on insulin, but having my sugars up is not good. They’re…[Read more]

    • I consider insulin my friend. I would not be alive today without insulin I would not be alive today. I do long for the day that I can reduce my insulin need to as low as possible and I hate the weight that I gained taking it. But now that I know more about how to get as insulin free as possible -I am optimistic. If you are not eating enough…[Read more]

  • I need some encouragement. I’ve been going 7 weeks now and have lost 10 pounds. My blood sugars dropped dramatically around week 4 and I slowly tapered off insulin. I’m still taking Metformin. Now my blood sugars are creeping back up. My resting BS was 200 today. I’ve not eaten anything “bad” and have actually increased my…[Read more]

    • Wow- 200 is high for a fasting blood sugar. If this has just been over the last day are you stressed out about something ? Are you drinking 1/2 your body weight in ounces daily. Also remember portion sizes count. If you have started reintroducing foods maybe you have reintroduced something you are allergic to. If you still have insulin maybe you…[Read more]

    • Make sure you are eating your snacks between meals. I walk before breakfast. I lost a lot to start with then it tapered off. Finally I realized I needed a snack before my morning walk my bs dropped and I lost 4 pounds the first week and 3 the next.

      • Fred. I agree about the snacks. If I don’t et enough my body hangs on to every ounce . How long of a walk do you take. I’m now walking 35-50 minutes depending on what my blood sugar level is when I hit the street. This is really helping keep my sugar levels down .

        • When I was in Florida I was walking 50 min. I’m in the mountains now and walking 30 min. The 30 is more difficult than the 50 was.

I was thinking the same thing this morning (really, another salad!!). I guess it helps me to write in my journal so I’m forced to reexamine my motivations and the consequences of not getting off sugar. Journaling is easy to blow off but I always find it beneficial. And I eat a lot of bananas and berries.

    • Hi, Are you following the BSS plan? There are lots of options besides salads. I hope you are eating protein with your salads.
      Blessings, Margaret
