A healthy immune system is critical for healthy aging, but it often gets left out of the longevity conversation. This is an example of where a Functional Medicine approach can make a world of difference.

By looking at the bigger picture of how our biological systems are intimately connected, we can take steps toward restoring their function as a whole to prolong our healthspan and achieve vibrant health.

Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Jeff Bland to discuss the importance of immune resilience and the many different factors that impact it. They talk about the gut-brain connection and how dysbiosis and leaky gut drive diseases of inflammaging. They also discuss how we can slow, and in many cases reverse, the aging process through the use of powerful superfoods, hormetic stressors, and diet and lifestyle tools.

Jeffrey Bland, PhD, is the founder of Big Bold Health, a company that’s on a mission to transform the way people think about the immune system. At Big Bold Health, Dr. Bland advocates for the power of immunorejuvenation to enhance immunity on a global level through the rediscovery of ancient food crops and superfoods. Dr. Bland is building a network of small farms and suppliers throughout the US that apply regenerative agriculture practices to support planetary health.

Dr. Bland’s career in health spans over 40 years. A nutritional biochemist by training, he began in academia as a university professor. In 1991, he and his wife, Susan, founded the Institute for Functional Medicine, and he has traveled the world many times in his role as the “father of Functional Medicine.” In 2012, Jeff founded another educational nonprofit called the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute. Dr. Bland is the author of The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, and Happier Life and countless other books and research papers.

Dhru and Dr. Bland also talk about the role epigenetics play in longevity and why taking responsibility for your diet and lifestyle choices is key to taking back your power. They also discuss the importance of eating polyphenol-rich foods to reverse biological aging and what happens when we don’t get enough of them in our diet.
