    Dr. Hyman,

I’m transitioning to a plant-based diet, no dairy but meat on occasion. Under tremendous stress and feeling out of control, I went to my physician who discovered I was low on vitamin D, and my blood work for thyroid, lipids were normal otherwise. He also prescribed celexa, an antidepressant, which helped in the short term which made me functional, but I didn’t like the way I felt on it–woodened. By taking supplements of D and a multiple vitamin, I felt better anyway. I’ve come to realize that I probably had adrenal fatigue. I am returning to my doctor for another physical. I want him to order lab tests that are more definitive about my functional health. I feel we could have caught the adrenal fatigue if the right test(s) were ordered. Do you have a list of tests that patients should ask for when they appear healthy, have a healthy lifestyle of exercise and reasonably good diet, but yet feel out of control?

Depression can be a symptom of low Vitamin D levels; I found out once when I ran out and figured I would wait awhile to pick up more Vitamin D supplements that I started feeling blue, which I can honestly say very rarely happens to me; after this happened on two different occasions I attributed it to running out of Vitamin D; once I started back up on my doses of D, things went back to normal. D levels can be check with a simple blood test to check your levels. I suffered from adrenal fatigue too and that test, according to my docs, is the most accurate when doing a saliva test done over the course of a day; they can then track your cortisol levels at different times of the day and diagnose you accordingly. Many people are walking around with exhausted adrenals; good book on this is by Dr. Diana Schwarzbein. http://www.schwarzbeinprinciple.com/pgs/home.html#

thanks, I have 2 questions: first, can you direct me to discussion on Parkinson’s Disease and RLS, and second, are there articles on how to get started, every thing I’ve read sounds reasonable and I am actually hopeful, but completely overwhelmed and so tired so I will need help.

I have been reading different diet books written by Dr. Hyman. I enjoy reading the articles that I receive in my email. I also enjoyed his visits to my church at Saddleback. I have stuck to his diets with the hope of better blood test resutls.

I had blood drawn last week and was a lttle disappointed in that my blood count were still high…

    White Blood cells – 12.4
    Red Blood cells – 5.19
    glucose – 111

Please Dr. Hyman advise… I have purchase you Blood Sugar Solution book, maybe it will have my answer.

    Thanks,
    Pattie McNulty

      Hi Pattie,

We are so glad you wrote in and filled us in with your progress. Yes, we want you to feel great and have lab work to mirror that wellbeing too. There are several reasons why your progress might not have met your goals. The good thing about The Blood Sugar Solution is that it encompasses the entire system and treats our body as a whole entity and not merely parts working independently from each other. So this concept will be familiar to you as you have read other work by Dr. Hyman. This program adds something new and different: many tools and resources for your personal success on this program. There are myriad tips to help you honor all options available to you so that you know if something is not working, there is another plan waiting for you. In fact there is a specific part of the book which speaks to this! In addition to these tools, there is an entire community of people JUST LIKE you sharing personal stories about their journies on the program. Together everyone can help each other, much like Saddleback! We are excited to get you going on the Blood Sugar Solution and have a solid belief this program will help you get where you thought you would be. And of course, the nutrition team is here for you to guide you through the program and to be available for any questions, concerns or obstacles you cross.

      In good health!
      Lizzy

Thank you so much for your short, informative daily videos that arrive in my email box each day for 30 days. I have learned so much from these. These suggestions add up to help me eliminate sugar from my diet without withdrawal. I look forward to new information by video from you each day.

I am having trouble losing weight. I am in my mid-fifties (ouch that hurt), going through menopause, suffer from hot flashes, restless sleep……etc. I eat a very well-balanced diet mostly salads at lunch and a somewhat healthy dinner, but I am not sure if what I am eating is always healthy. I exercise – pilates and yoga and walk when ever I can fit it in. The scale does not budge and it is a bit discouraging.
Over the past 2 years I have been under an enormous amount of stress due to my son being diagnosed with an auto-immune disease (Wegener’s Granulomatosis) – actually that is how I found your site and had planned on making an appointment for him, but the time and logisitics have not been in order. Can you give me some pointers please? Thank you for your time.

I have done great with weight loss (about a pound a day) and my bloodpressure medication I had to cut in half taking only the morning dose. I am feeling far better, my depression is lifting and my mind is clearer. BUT my fasting glucose level is is sitting at 111-117? I’ve taken all the test and am on all the suppliments (and I mean ALL the suppliments-yes I scored that bad) With everything else falling into place, why isn’t the glucose changing? How long should it take? thank you and have a wonderful day! :)
