Terry Wahls on How She Reversed Multiple Sclerosis Using the Power of Functional Medicine
My friend and colleague, Dr. Terry Wahls is considered a medical marvel by many. To me, her story is the epitome of what it means to use food as medicine. In 2000, Dr. Wahls was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. By 2003, she had to start using a wheelchair because of the progression of this disease. As a physician who was very skeptical of using wellness interventions to treat disease, Dr. Wahls suddenly found herself exploring all options to heal her body, including lifestyle medicine. In 2007, Dr. Wahls discovered Functional Medicine and used the power of food and lifestyle changes to treat and manage her disease. Dr. Wahls was able to go from being almost bedridden to completing an 18-mile bicycle tour. Since then, Dr. Wahls has been helping people from all over the world treat their autoimmune conditions, and I am so honored to have her on this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine and the cookbook The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions. In today’s episode, we discuss how Dr. Wahls stunned the medical community by reversing her painful symptoms of MS. The foundation of her protocol: food, specifically a whopping 18 servings of vegetables a day! Dr. Wahls designed a dietary protocol so nutrient dense that it could aid in healing her body. We discuss the types of plant foods, proteins, and fats that Dr. Wahls incorporates daily as well as the supplements she recommends. We also cover lifestyle changes that she made including meditation, stress reduction, movement, and much more. Dr. Wahls’ story is one of hope and proof that what we eat and how we live matters, especially when it comes to optimizing health and improving quality of life. No one wants to hear that they’ve been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, but Dr. Wahls shows us that there are things we can do to reduce the symptoms of disease. I know you’ll be as inspired as I am by the extraordinary Dr. Terry Wahls. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, and anywhere else you access podcasts. Or, watch us in action right here on YouTube.
