When it comes to longevity, the goal isn’t just to live as long as possible. The true objective is to live as vibrantly and energetically as possible, for as long as possible. So how exactly do we do this?
On this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I was happy to sit down and talk with Dr. Chris Rinsch and Dr. Stuart Phillips about the role of mitochondria in aging, and how we can use various compounds that are found in plants to upregulate our biology and increase not just our lifespan, but more importantly our healthspan.
We’ve been hearing a lot about a phenomenon called autophagy, which is the body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells. This is one of the benefits of a ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting, or time-restricted eating—they all improve autophagy. There is another thing that happens in the body called mitophagy, which is an incredible breakthrough in understanding longevity science.
We know that one of the main causes of aging is a decline in the function of our mitochondria, otherwise known as the powerhouse of our cells. And our cells protect themselves from this decline by stimulating the selective recycling of old or damaged mitochondria into new healthy ones. This process is known as mitophagy.
In our conversation, Drs. Phillips and Rinsch share how Urolithin A, a naturally-occurring metabolite found in certain foods, such as pomegranate, some nuts, and berries stimulates mitophagy. Dr. Rinsch and Dr. Phillips walk us through the fascinating science that led to this discovery, the subsequent development of their product Mitopure, and how it can help optimize cellular health and strength as we age.
