What Foods Should You Eat And Supplements Should You Take To Age Well?

Episode 727 1h 6m

Overview

Our bodies are literally made out of the food we eat. Real, whole foods contain information in the form of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, protein, phytonutrients, and fiber. These compounds impact every node of the Functional Medicine matrix, like our vascular and immune systems, detox and energy pathways, microbiome, and everything in between. That’s why food is our most powerful tool for getting our healthspan to match our lifespan.

On today’s episode, I’m excited to talk to Dr. Michael Murray, one of the world’s leading authorities on natural medicine, about the power of food for optimal health and longevity and how to activate our body’s own innate healing system. While there are many areas of life we want to dial in for optimal health and longevity, the best strategy for a long healthy life is to eat your medicine. The food we eat every single day acts as information for our cells and influences our DNA expression.

Dr. Murray and I discuss how to give our bodies the right instructions through food and how to reduce certain offenders from your diet to optimize cellular renewal and function. In an ideal world where soils are rich, and air and water are pure, we would be able to get all of the vitamins and nutrients we need to optimally support and sustain a disease-free life through diet alone. However, for most, that’s just not practical in our toxic, modern world.

Dr. Murray and I talk about the top supplements for longevity, including quercetin and berberine, which play a key role in supporting our mitochondria, inhibiting inflammation, and boosting our immune system. Dr. Murray also shares his personal supplement regimen. Mindset and social networks are two other topics I’m always interested in exploring, and it turns out these are also important pieces for our trajectory of healthy aging. Dr. Murray and I discuss the importance of mindset, having a sense of purpose, and the quality of our relationships as they relate to longevity and wellbeing. I hope you’ll tune in.
