How The 10-Day Detox Diet Is Different From My Other Books

In a recent interview, I was asked how The 10-Day Detox Diet is different from my other books and what caused this book to hit a nerve so strongly that it debuted at #1 both on Amazon and on The New York Times Best Seller list?

As you may know, lately, I’ve done a lot of interviews and answered a LOT of questions. But this one made me think. What is it about this book that has made people sit up and listen?

Is it that sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine?

Is it that people are tired of the weight-loss-weight-gain roller coaster?

Is it that the calories-in-calories-out theory doesn’t work, and even if it did, it’s impossible to count calories accurately?

Or is it that people are just tired of limiting their food intake?

It’s probably all of the above and more!

And these are just some of the reasons why I wrote this latest book. What is it? And how does it differ from my other books? Let me explain.

The 10-Day Detox Diet grew out of a deeper understanding of the biology of food addiction and how it is so often at the root of people’s failure to change their behavior and their diet. The fact that we eat 152 pounds of sugar and 146 pounds of flour per person per year in America makes it impossible for people to control their behavior around food. These substances are highly addictive; in fact, they are eight times as addictive as cocaine. Rats will keep eating sugar even while they are getting electric shocks to make them stop!

The truth is that we blame people for being overweight, but it’s not their fault. Our taste buds, hormones, brain chemistry and hormones have been hijacked by the food industry. The 10-Day Detox Diet helps reset your hormones and brain chemistry and turns off inflammation in just 10 days, and the result is not only a significant jump-start on weight loss but also a dramatic change in health.

Six hundred people did a trial of the program—they not only lost more than 4,000 pounds in 10 days and dropped blood sugar by 20 points and blood pressure by 10 points but they reduced all symptoms from all diseases by 62 percent in 10 days. There is no drug on the planet that can do that. Food is the most powerful medicine on the planet.

The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet book is for you if you:

  • want a brief but compelling glimpse into how powerful the affect of food is on your mind-body system and how quickly eating real food can shift your health and your weight.
  • have FLC Syndrome (feel like crap) and want to feel better in 10 days.
  • have been struggling in shame, guilt and secrecy about your addiction to food and want to stop compulsive and impulsive eating for good.
  • are busy and crunched for time and need a fast program that is evidenced-based and reliable.

If you have followed me for a while, you know that I am the chairman of The Institute of Functional Medicine. Functional Medicine is a personalized approach to address the root causes of disease. It introduces a new way of thinking that uses food as the primary medicine. It is medicine by cause, not by symptom. We treat the system, not the symptoms.

Functional Medicine is the science of creating health. And it works across the entire spectrum of chronic disease to improve function and optimize health. In fact, the very notion of disease has become obsolete, as we understand the root causes and how everything is connected. To understand more about this model, watch my TEDMED talk on Functional Medicine.

My books and programs are focused on healing different conditions and are about using food and the principles of healing in different ways. And as the science evolves, there is a deeper understanding of how that works and how to bring this healing to millions.

Let’s now review some of my other books to see how they’re different and to learn which one may be best for you:

The Blood Sugar Solution and The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook (2012)

The Blood Sugar Solution and companion cookbook are for you if you:

  • have pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes or have weight to lose and are looking for a lifestyle (not another diet) to get you or keep you off your medications.
  • want to jump-start and optimize your health and prevent cancer, heart disease, dementia and more and want to learn the secrets of creating the tastiest meals with ingredients that leave you feeling nourished and satisfied—not deprived.
  • want a low-glycemic, anti-inflammatory, gluten- and dairy-free way of eating.
  • want a plan that teaches you flexibility, how to get back on the wagon when you veer off course and how to maintain your health and weight while normal life activities occur (holidays, work events, family events, family dinner, etc.).
  • are fascinated by the science of Functional Medicine, intrigued by the seven keys to wellness and want to see how this medicine works for you.

Try The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook if any of these meals appeal to your senses:

  • Spaghetti Squash Pad Thai
  • Blue Cheese Cowboy Burger
  • Double Peanut Butter Chocolate Cups

The epidemic of type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes has exploded. In the last ten years, we went from one in ten kids with pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes to nearly one in four kids. And now, one in two Americans has pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. I felt we needed a comprehensive plan to address the root cause of “diabesity,” which is insulin resistance. It is not just our food that causes diabesity. Many factors are often missed, including not only our high sugar intake but also hidden triggers of inflammation, including environmental toxins, unhealthy gut flora, food allergens like gluten and dairy, stress, nutritional deficiencies and more. The book and the cookbook provide a comprehensive plan to get to the root of this epidemic and reverse diabesity.

The UltraSimple Diet (2007)

The UltraSimple Diet book is for you if you:

  • have a sneaking suspicion that the food you are eating is triggering inflammatory conditions, such as eczema, allergies, asthma, headaches, joint stiffness, arthritis and digestive problems or if you just feel sick and tired.
  • want a structured plan to help hold you accountable to your commitment to your elimination diet.
  • enjoy understanding the science behind inflammation and toxicity and how food can be harmful or medicinal depending on your unique biochemistry.

One of the most important healing tools in Functional Medicine for a whole host of chronic inflammatory and toxic symptoms is a comprehensive elimination diet that eliminates the most common food allergies and sensitivities. I use this all the time in my practice for my patients, and I realized they needed a simple, practical guide for how to do this. Most people don’t connect the dots between how they feel and the food they eat. Eliminating the most common food sensitivities (gluten, dairy, eggs, corn, nightshades, citrus, etc.) and adding whole, fresh food can help people reboot in as little as one week. This book was a blockbuster sleeper success. If you have allergies, autoimmune, digestive problems or just feel lousy, The UltraSimple Diet is a great way to reboot and heal and identify which foods are a problem for you.

The UltraMind Solution (2009)

The UltraMind Solution book is for you if you:

  • want to understand how nutrition and lifestyle affect your brain function and want to follow a plan to optimize your brain health.
  • have heard about certain nutrients helping depression, anxiety, attention deficit, memory problems or other issues of “broken brain syndrome” but don’t quite understand what, how or if you should be taking supplements.
  • feel like you just aren’t the same version of yourself who was once active, sharp and excited about life and you aren’t ready to feel “old.”

Everything in the body is connected. As I began treating the body as a whole system, I observed that when I treated people’s stomach issues or allergies or skin problems, improved their metabolism or helped them detoxify from heavy metals or optimized their nutrient levels, such as vitamin B12, folate, B6, magnesium, vitamin D, or omega-3 fats, those patients had dramatic improvements in their mental health, including depression, anxiety, brain fog, as well as attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, autism and even memory loss and dementia. Most understand the mind-body connection but few were talking about the body-mind connection—how the body affects the brain. The UltraMind Solution is one of my favorite books because it really goes into the science of Functional Medicine, and I am a bit of a science geek. But it also provides a pathway for healing so much that goes wrong in our head. If you have a brain, read this book!

I’m sure you can see a common thread here regarding these nutritional principles. They are similar, because the science shows us that there is really only one basic good “human diet.” It’s not like one diet prevents cancer but another prevents diabetes and yet another prevents heart attacks, dementia or autoimmune diseases. A whole-foods, low-glycemic, predominately plant-based, phytonutrient-rich diet is the foundation of health and prevents and can treat most chronic diseases.

I hope these books mean as much to you as they do to me. My wish is for them to make a lasting impact on your health, so that you can trust your body’s innate ability to heal given the right ingredients—healthy food, some fun movement, real relaxation and deep, authentic love.

    • Take the PGX 15 minutes before meals. Then, take your supplements with meals. You will actually increase your absorption of the nutrients in your food and supplements this way.

      • I’ve started reading your book and it truly inspires me to quit sugar. I would like to start my 10-day detox, however, I have been looking for PGX here in my country, but to no avail.

Will Psyllium fibre help? or is it okay to use as a substitute?

  • Hi. Have your 10 day detox book. On day 6 this morning.

I notice positive changes but I’m still not sleeping well (at all). I finally took something to sleep last night.

First prescription drug I take while on the detox. I notice many aches and pains in my body that I didn’t notice before and my energy is still pretty low. I’m doing the detox to the letter.

Also, I tried signing up for the support groups. Said I would soon get an email and I never did, then when I tried to sign back up, it said my username was already taken…well yeah…by me…but I still haven’t received an email from your website to confirm or activate me.

  • I can’t have any nuts. They are a big part of your plan. What can I have instead?

    • Hi Rosalie,
Feel free to substitute seeds instead (pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds) or you can follow the program by simply eliminating the nuts. • Dr. Hyman,

I found your book and read some of the symptoms that I had, which were most of them. It looked tough, but I jumped at the chance of curing my ailments. I have to say, you are a genius! I’ve only been on the diet for three days, but my bloating is gone, my skin feels softer and smoother and my energy is up dramatically. I know that I was suppose to slowly come off of caffeine, but I am determined and jumped in full blown with both feet and am glad I did! I know that I need to cut back on television and internet, but that has been a slower thing for me. I would like to point out that I wear bi-focals and it is strange, but my vision is clear now and I can read even the small print in my books and then look up at words on the television without the words blurring. That seems crazy to me, but it is true. I have been told by doctors that I am not diabetic and wasn’t with my pregnancies, either, but I am beginning to question them on this one. I am a true believer in this new way of eating and would like to thank you for sharing your discoveries with the rest of us. I hope to lose my extra 50 lbs over the next few months and maybe trim down enough in the next month to look better at my 30 yr high school reunion! Thanks again for sharing this wonderful plan!!!

    • Hi Lynne, the 10 Day Detox outlines the after detox process, reintroducing foods, retesting your vitals & toxicity, etc. It also introduces the Advanced Plan for continued weight loss and helping you pursue health.

  • I am in day 5 of the plan and have followed it to the letter. On day 3 I became nauseous, which the book said might happen, and vomited twice. On day 4, I was nauseous but had no vomiting. I am now on day 5 and vomited after a breakfast of a 2-egg omelet with veggies. I thought all the nuts and oils were too rich for my stomach so today I tried to keep it simpler with foods my stomach was used to. I vomited right after eating half the omelt. Could the PGX powder be causing this? Comments or suggestions?

  • Hi, I have been reading the 10day detox book, I think I am definently toxic but I have type 1 diabetes, do you recommend I still do the detox as in the book or are there changes I could apply? Or not recommended? Thanks

  • I have children with life threatening peanut and tree nut allergies and cannot keep those items in my house. What do you recommend I replace the nuts with?

  • Hi,

I have a lot of food allergies including a very severe allergy to fish & shellfish. I am also allergic to Berries, melon, hemp seeds, lavender, dandelion, most of the aster family, sunflower seeds (esp. the oil), night shades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, etc.) – including cauliflower. I need to avoid soy (Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism) – it aggravates it. I was also told to limit cruciferous veggies because of goiter. I am also intolerant of Hass avocados,, the Florida type is OK. Is there an alternative diet plan/recipes that I could use for the 10 day Detox Diet?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

      • I will try it out. I really want to find a way to get my health back and possibly reverse my diabetes, or at least keep it from advancing. I have heard so many people say they got great results on the program. However because I have so many food allergies, it been a struggle finding a way to follow the diet.

        Thank you for the help.

  • I bought the 10 Day Detox book and am trying to gather the supplements, but am on a very limited budget. I have heard that Glucomannan and PGX are the same thing. Is this true? Is it okay to substitute Glucomannan for PGX during the detox?

    • Hi Amy,
Yes, glucomannan would be a good source of soluble fiber to use during the 10-Day Detox Diet program.

  • I am on day #6 of the 10 Day Detox. I tried it by the recommendation of my yoga instructor. I am seeing so much improvement in many areas but the most dramatic is that my mind seems amazingly clear. I don’t really know how to explain it, but even though I am a bit tired, I am never hungry, not craving anything (for the first time in my life,) and my mind feels light and clean.

Had no idea that sugar and additives were so negatively powerful.

    Thank you Dr. Hyman.

    • Hi Susan,
Yes, Dr. Hyman recommends PGX fiber as part of his programs to help with fullness and to help regulate blood sugar. PGX is available in granules or capsules at most health food stores or online (see

  • before I buy this book I would like to know what kind of foods you have to eat. I do not eat meat of any kind or fish. Would you please let me know if you do.

    • Hello Liddy,
The recommended foods include a variety of lean proteins (vegetarian if preferred), non-starchy vegetables, and healthy fats. Did you know you can work with Dr. Hyman’s nutritionists virtually? • I will be having para aortic Lymphadenectomy in 2 weeks. My dr is suspects it may be a recurring bout with the cancer that I was diagnosed with last July, it went into remission Dec 2013.

My question is; would it be healthy for me to start this diet right before my surgery or am I submitting my body to a possible shock due to the change in eating habits?

    • Hi David,
I recommend that you discuss the nutrition recommendations in the 10-Day Detox Diet Program with your doctor to best prepare for your upcoming surgery. Limiting sugar, dairy, and processed foods will help improve your health for a quick recovery.
Wishing you the best of health,

  • Watch out! My RD gave me a load of PGX free samples and they plugged me up real good. I had no idea how bad constipation could be. I promise I will never laugh about constipation again!

  • I am a nursing Mom to a 6 weeks old baby. I am planing on nursing for 18 months, as I did with my older child. I read the book and would like to start the diet for 100 days before re-introducing gluten and dairy products, as recommended in the book. I’m not sure that I can do this while breastfeeding. I’m worried about eliminating dairy and gluten and not introducing them to my baby. I’m worried that by not introducing them she will become sensitve to them later on. I am also worried about the calorie intake.
What is best for my child and for me to loose the 40 lb I gave gained?

    • Hello Ellie,
While you are nursing, we recommend that you follow the Basic Plan described in chapter 18 of the book with the option of including dairy and gluten-containing whole grains in your diet. Eliminating sugar, processed foods and including nutrient-rich whole foods at each meal will help you reach your weight goal.

  • Hi

I felt okay the first 6 days on the 10 day detox. I did feel really thirsty all the time and had more muscle achiness. I was also very tired by 8-9pm which is unusual for me. I did have to cut down the PGX to once a day as I found my appetite was not a concern and it caused constipation despite increasing my intake of vit C and Mg.
The 7th and 8th day I have felt terrible. I feel very weak later in the day, with less energy. I had to eat some dried fruit and starch to feel a bit better. I realize this is not a typical presentation druing the detox diet and am suspicious of some underlying health concerns. Is there a few things I should investigate?
