Meet the Stallman Family

Meet the Stallman Family

Brigitte Stallman, is the mother of four incredible children and the wife of a hardworking, devoted father.  Being the rock of her family takes a big chunk of Brigitte’s time and sadly, has also sapped her energy and resources that she needs for her own self-care, leaving her unhealthy, sick and overweight.  Not only has she seen how her own health has deteriorated, Brigitte has seen her entire family’s health continually decline.  They were all struggling and she knew something had to change – something very real and profound. Like many people, Brigitte’s relationship with her body and weight is like a complex roller coaster of ups and downs, and twists and turns.  Jumping on and off various diets has become the norm.  Not to mention that because of her own childhood struggles with weight, she had vowed to never restrict her children’s eating or put them on diets. However, seeing her children’s weight creep up, she now realizes that there is probably a better way to support their relationships with food, body image and weight. Brigitte says, “Not only was I unhealthy and overweight, but my family was too!!” I was drowning in the middle of the ocean, and my kids were too, and I couldn’t save them because I couldn’t save myself. I cried a lot; I prayed a lot. I continued for years to try to lose weight on my own, and failed at every program out there.”

One day, Brigitte saw Dr. Oz’s casting call for families who wanted to get healthier together. Something in her knew that she had to write in and share her hopes for her family to get healthy.  With every positive phone call from the Oz staff, a little more hope began to enter the Stallmans hearts.

“The day that the producers called us to let us know WE were the family chosen, I screamed and cried for joy, and thanked God for this amazing blessing! We had just won the “health lottery”  – The producers had selected the Stallmans to work with, a simple small-town, average American family.  When we heard that we were going to work with Dr. Hyman and his Nutrition Director, Lizzy Swick, I was in awe!!! We didn’t win just the lottery for health and wellness, we won the Power-Ball lottery for health and wellness.  I know in this journey, there WILL be struggles, but we intend to enjoy every step, and share it with the entire nation. We are the Stallmans and together we are bringing healthy back!”

On the Season 6 premier, of the Dr. Oz Show, the Stallmans learned the gravity of their health issues, when Dr. Oz put them through his regularly featured segment -The Truth Tube.   It was a challenging experience and some family members cried off-camera in the bathroom. Brigitte says, “she dried her tears and realized for once in my family’s life, we not only had the truth, but we also had a plan to get our family from point A to point Z.” We were going to rewrite our family history, with inspiration from, Dr. Hyman’s book – The Blood Sugar Solution 10 – Day  Detox Diet!

The prescription for the Stallmans is simple  – have our Nutrition Director, personally lead the Stallmans through the initial ten days, and then have them stay on the program for an entire month.  This will reset their taste buds, their metabolism, and their lifestyle.

The Stallman family, is really committed to taking back their health.  We invite you to go on this journey with them, by visiting this page each day to view their progress.  They will post videos and blogs, about how they are doing, and we ask that you show your support as they work through their detox.  They are determined to show everyone what it takes to reach their health goals (the good, the bad, and the ugly) and that they will persevere – and your encouragement is important to their success!  As we always say, it is through the power of community, that we can help individuals, families and entire villages to heal.  We get better together – and this is how! Let’s do this!

Rekindled exercise

by
Back in the day, I lettered in track and cross country. I also pole vaulted. I was district champion and was in the best shape of my life. That was many years ago. Then, I graduated from high school and a couple years later started a family and went to work full time to support my family. I found there wasn't a lot of time to exercise and honestly, I didn't make time to run anymore. Even though I have always had a job that was active and entailed physical work, I didn't often work out by getting my heart rate up. I quickly turned…

Halloween Tricks or Treats for the Stallmans!

by
The month of October is a special time for our family. We have three October birthdays, and Mike and I married on Halloween. We always enjoy celebrating the last holiday of October and our anniversary with great festive Halloween fun. In past years, we always started our evening with a carb laden and sugar laced meal. Then we would go trick or treating for a short time. While eating tons of candy, we would then head to our church Harvest Festival, where we would eat carnival-type foods as a second dinner. That was the old Stallman family.  This Halloween the…

Family

by
One of my favorite animated movies is “Lilo and Stitch.” It is such a sweet story that talks about family or Ohana. The term Ohana is Hawaiian and it means “family bound together to cooperate and remember one another”. As Lilo says, Ohana means no one is left behind or forgotten. When we started this plan a couple months ago, we needed to depend on Ohana like never before. We were so toxic and physically sick by what we were eating. The sad part is we had no clue just how sick we were. I just knew we needed help!…

Perfectly Imperfect!

by
Last week proved to be a difficult one. I had to come face to face with my food diary, and I had to actually turn it in to be reviewed by Dr. Hyman and Lizzy. The great news is that turning it in proved to be so helpful.  Dr. Hyman and Lizzy provided great suggestions on how to keep moving forward with no judgment (thanks, guys!). As a result, I tweaked a few things in my diet and I ended up having a very successful week. But the best part is, I realized that by admitting my struggles, I got wonderful…

My birthday!

by
This time of year brings a lot of celebrations in our family. Between all the normal holidays, most of us have birthdays. For me, this year was a milestone birthday; I was going to be 25! For me, celebrations were about family, fun, and food. Our family parties were always about eating an awesome dinner and having sugary cake. I had a lot planned for my birthday this year; none of which was revolving around food. My best friend planned a super fun girl’s weekend and I was so excited to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday…

The Diary

by
When I was a teen I started a diary. Every night or day I would (what I now call) journal. I would put my secrets, fears and hopes into this book.  I would so carefully hide it under my pillow or dresser or anywhere I thought my older brothers wouldn’t find it. Nobody else read it but me. If nobody else read it then I felt safe and without judgment. Nobody would know that I wasn’t perfect and that I hadn’t figured out life as a teen. Here we are today and my family and I have a HUGE task…

A Surprise Visit I Will Never Forget!

by
We were so excited for today! Today is the day the film crew comes to visit for the second taping of The Dr. Oz Show. We have been so excited to show off our progress! Here is how it went: As the vans and cars filled with cameras and booms arrived, there was so much excitement!  Then a fancy car arrived, with dark tinted windows and a driver. We had no clue who this could be! The field producer came in and said she has a surprise for us. She firmly told us to stay put in the living room…

The Truth Tube

by
I was so excited to be back on the Dr. Oz show again - what a dream this whole experience has been. The last time we were on the show, I was so overwhelmed by the Truth Tube news.  I had just been told for the first time exactly how sick we all were. Even though I suspected this, the blow was very emotional for me and it all hit me once the cameras were off and I wasn’t facing a big audience. The only good news we received that day was that we were going home with a plan,…

Dr. Oz asks Me to Help The Stallmans

by
I first met the Stallman family in the greenroom at The Dr. Oz Show in New York City. The whole family was together, reflecting on the experience of finding out in front of the camera, Dr. Oz and millions of viewers, that they were sick – really sick. Hearing that your blood sugars show you are diabetic (when you didn’t know it) or that your C-reactive protein (CRP) levels show extremely high levels of inflammation are not things any of us wants to hear.  Especially when we know that the root cause of being sick is our diet or our…

Relax and Be Still

by
As we journey, I am realizing this truly is SO much more than what we are eating. It is truly about taking care of our whole beings. It is why Dr. Hyman recommends the detox baths, journaling and media fasts to name only a few stress busters. As a Mom, nurturing myself is a new thing because I am the nurturer of others. I’m learning that in order to be the best I can be, it is critical to take time for me and be nurtured. For me, before detoxing, life would get in the way. Stress would creep in,…

Concert Conquered!

by
Last weekend, I visited a local theme park for a Christian concert with some friends. I was so nervous. It wasn't the rides or the people that I was nervous about – it was the food. How was I going to survive an overnight stay and a whole day at a theme park? There won't be anything healthy for me to eat! I couldn't possibly eat french fries and pizza! I had to make a plan; that's the only way I can possibly get through this. I decided I needed to bring healthy snacks; lots and lots of snacks. I…
