We are in an epidemic of chronic illness. Despite the advances in conventional medical care over the last decades, this system of medicine is governed by a persistent myth that if you know the name of your disease, you know what’s wrong with you. Once you have a label, you are put in the group of people who have the same label, and it is assumed you carry the attributes of this group. Unfortunately, this approach or method of thinking is outdated, increasingly useless, and often dangerous. Functional Medicine, on the other hand, looks at the body with a systems-based approach, understanding how all our different parts work together and looking at a symptom as a sign of dysfunction that we need to get to the root cause of, not just tame.
