How to Find Your Purpose

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”Howard Thurman The concept of purpose is an essential part of all Blue Zone communities, a term coined to designate the geographic regions where high percentages of centenarians are enjoying remarkably long, full lives. Researchers have found that having a sense of purpose makes for a happier and healthier human. We’ve also seen that feeling purpose can benefit brain health, as studies have shown those who maintain a greater sense of purpose in life have a lower risk of stroke. It’s clear that our internal dialogue and our purpose is intimately connected to our physical body. Purpose can literally create longevity. What is purpose? Purpose answers the question, “Why are you here?” Essentially, it’s the thing that motivates you day in and day out. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sat down with Reverend Michael Beckwith to talk about purpose, intention, and living in flow. Reverend Michael Beckwith is the Founder and Spiritual Director of the Agape International Spiritual Center, a trans-denominational community headquartered in Los Angeles, comprised of thousands of local members and global live streamers. In 2012, Rev. Michael Beckwith addressed the UN General Assembly during its annual World Interfaith Harmony Week. As co-founder and president of the Association for Global New Thought, he hosts conferences featuring harbingers of world peace including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and had the distinguished honor of presenting Nelson Mandela with the Gandhi King Award. Dr. Beckwith is a sought after meditation teacher, conference speaker, and seminar leader on the Life Visioning Process™. Before our interview, I had the privilege of seeing Reverend Michael speak on stage at my Feel Good Summit. His ability to communicate so effortlessly about spirituality and purpose moved me immensely. In this episode, we talk about the idea of intention deficit disorder, the lack of intention in our day to day lives. Unfortunately, many of us are living in this reactionary state where we respond based on our circumstances. Instead, Reverend Michael encourages us to live with intention and therefore, take our lives back. Setting an intention daily or weekly that includes creativity, generosity, and kindness can have profound effects on our lives and the lives of our community. Instead of waiting for life to happen to us, Reverend Michael says we can take control with intention and watch as the universe supports us in that effort. I’ve found the practice of being intentional extremely moving in my own life; it’s helped me overcome challenges and hard times with grace and positivity. We have to be active participants in our lives by asking empowering questions and eliminating the limiting beliefs and victimization that so many of us suffer from. Michael provides much inspiration for how to do that every single day, and more, on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. Many of us have questioned our reason for being here in this life and in doing that we are seeking our purpose—we’re looking for our deepest understanding of our place in the Universe and how to share our unique gifts with the world. Michael’s guidance in opening up to all the good around us helps to answer these questions. Reverend Beckwith also shares his advice for dealing with this modern, hectic world, and the onslaught of tragic messages that we receive from the news and media every day. How can we use community to create greater change? How can we tap into our own inner wisdom to create change? Learn more in this powerful episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. Be sure to listen in on iTunes or watch our conversation on YouTube. I know you’ll be inspired.
