Coincidence or synchronicity?

We’ve all had it happen, a series of signs or events too thought-provoking or emotionally touching to be just coincidence.

This amazing phenomenon is called synchronicity. It’s defined as a meaningful coincidence—an event on the outside that speaks to something on the inside to —as opposed to just a random occurrence. If it means something to us, it automatically becomes something deeper.

Some believe synchronicity is just the result of confirmation-bias, the psychological term for recognizing the things that confirm our beliefs, which the brain is good at doing. That’s why after researching the new road bike you want to buy you start seeing the same one everywhere you go. But does that spark a deep meaning or is it a coincidence?

My good friend Deepak Chopra takes a different approach to synchronicity. He feels there are no coincidences and that everything holds meaning. This is life saying, “There’s more in this world than you dream of.” Synchronicity defies cause and effect.

Though the term synchronicity was originally dubbed by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, Deepak looks at synchronicity as the “organizing ability of pure consciousness.” By exploring our own awareness at its deepest level, we see how everything is connected and that is what synchronicity is revealing.

If you missed last week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, Deepak joined me to discuss consciousness, the human experience, breaking out of conditioned thoughts, and of course synchronicity, along with so much more.

Dr. Deepak Chopra is the founder of The Chopra Foundation, a non-profit entity for research on wellbeing and humanitarianism, and Chopra Global, a modern-day health company at the intersection of science and spirituality, and is a world-renowned pioneer in integrative medicine and personal transformation. Chopra is a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, San Diego. He is the author of over 89 books translated into over forty-three languages, including numerous New York Times bestsellers. His 90th book and national bestseller,

Metahuman: Unleashing Your Infinite Potential, unlocks the secrets to moving beyond our present limitations to access a field of infinite possibilities.

If you’re interested in changing your level of consciousness and learning to ask yourself the right questions for inner awakening, this episode is for you.

I hope you’ll tune in.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Mark Hyman, MD
